According to the Youngstown Vindicator , WBC/WBO middleweight champion Kelly Pavlik is unable to move forward with his December 5 clash with Paul Williams. The fight was previously scheduled for October, and postponed due to a staph infection suffered by Pavlik and later rescheduled for the December date. Pavlik's trainer Jack Loew says the staph infection has not gone away as expected and his fighter is unable to close his left hand.

"He's trying," said Loew. "He's been running, he's been trying to train in the gym. He's trying to shadow box with one hand, hit the speed bag with one hand. ... I've been trying to keep it a secret but it's not going great and I'm not going to fool anybody any longer."

They are trying to reschedule the fight for January 23 but Williams' side may not accept another postponement.

Williams should get in a substitute.

January 23rd. That should be interesting. Thats the night of the Showtime doubleheader featuring Abraham/Dirrell and Povetkin/Peter or Chambers. And if it is Peter does Arum go up against himself.

What if they offer Paul Williams the sixth spot in the SuperSix. :cheer::cheer:

Or they go back to the Williams/Dzinziruk fight that was originally scheduled for Oct 3rd. :cheer::cheer:

It can be. It's unusual that it has lasted as long as it allegedly has. But I know for a fact they're very painful. Often times, people with infections like these are prescribed pain-killers. I kind of hope Pavlik's problem is a staff infection and not pain-killers.

I too am running out of patience when it comes to Pavlik. Regardless of whether his story is true, it's difficult to be a fan of someone who never seems to fight.

Damn, this is disappointing. When the possibility of this fight was first breached a couple of years ago when Williams was still a Welterweight I didn't take it very seriously.

Recently it has become THE fight I was looking forward to.

Williams needs to look elsewhere for a fight. There is absolutely no guarantee Kelly´s hand will be healed at the end of January, if it is as nasty as some people say it is.There were rumours Pavlik missed some doctors appointments to get treatment, but Arum/HBO probably didn´t give it much thought as Pavlik was in such a comfortable position despite the Hopkins loss. Then Showtime dropped the SuperSix bomb on them and Pavlik was under pressure to get back in the ring. First they tried to upstage the tournament by quickly setting up the bout for Oct 3rd, and then rescheduled it for Dec. 3rd and meanwhile Williams is the real loser in all this. Don´t sign contracts, if you aren´t healthy.

Sergio Martinez and Sergei Dzinziruk might be other options.

And as mentioned, Cintron wouldn't be that bad of a late replacement, either.

Clottey's a welterweight, Quintana's not quite a welterweight and not really a junior middleweight.

I think I'd rather they left that fight in tact if possible, and simply find a replacement for Pavlik.

At least this news is coming with days still left in October.

    I'd much rather see Quintana/Clottey.

Plus there's no way Williams can make 147 anymore.

As I've been saying since Pavlik v Taylor II, Kelly isn't interested in fighting middleweights.

Who he is interested in fighting? It's not like his record is padded with a bunch of 154 pounders the way Taylor's was. What are you suggesting?

Im suggesting he isn't interested in defending the middleweight championship of the world against legitimate opponents. He wants big fights, big prizes and noteriety. Someone's been talking stupid shit in his ear fo rfar too long....because at the end of the day, Kelly Pavlik is no boxing superstar and he never will be. He's just not good enough to remain at that level for very long without being beaten.

Duddy, Rubio, Lockett and a bunch of other scrubs have all been lined up and either knocked down or at least considered. Nothing is happening with Pavlik right now and when was the last time he looked good? Taylor I? A fight where he nearly lost?

Crazy to think how disappointing it's been actually, considering when he sort of burst onto the world scene after battering Miranda and Taylor, you, I, and many others were pretty hyped.

Kelly Pavlik is the biggest let down in boxing for me in a long freaking while. I had high hopes for the guy and now he's been on the shelf for what seems like forever. What a shame.

Probably that he, and Arum, had ample time to make an Abraham unification.

According to Steve Kim, Team Williams is "squarely 'focusing in' on facing Sergio Martinez on Dec 5th."
