Which fighters are most physically strong? Who man handle opponents, and are hard to push around, back. Some that come to mind: Foreman: Nuff said. Pavlik: Strong as a bull. Hatton: Man handled Tszyu(albeit an old Tszyu) and Castillo, and just about every other fighter he's ever faced(except Urango & Collazo). Aaron Pryor: He had that crack head strength.:: Jake Lamotta Hagler Micheal Nunn: Yes, Micheal Nunn. He threw Juan Roldan around like a rag doll, something not even Hagler could do. Duran at 135. Others?
Rocky Marciano, Ruben Olivares, Sonny Liston, Mickey Walker, Jack Dempsey, Joe Louis, Henry Armstrong, Beau Jack, Roberto Duran, and Mike Tyson.
I think you misunderstood the question. Being aggressive or big puncher doesn't mean the same as physically strong
Tszyu himself was a moster for a light-welterweight. Out of heavies, Larry Holmes was among the strongest.
Fair, but of the ones he has, you can't argue with Marciano, Liston, Dempsey, Walker, Armstrong, Duran and Tyson. So not a bad list at all. Peace.
I definitely disagree with Dempsey and Tyson. Tyson was easily bullied by Holyfield who was naturally the smaller man and big guys could tie him up effectively. Likewise Tyson, Dempsey had punching power but not that much strength
I can see your point on Tyson.....but if you really believe that about Dempsey you simply may not have watched enough fights. He was a small, relatively light HWT and was able to physically handle much bigger men - sometimes easily. Peace.
I have seen Dempsey against Carpentier, Willard, Firpo and Brennan plus clips of his fights with Tunney and Sharkey. From those I have not picked up him being physically exceptionally strong but you can be correct
Just look at the Willard and Firpo fights again, for starters. Remember to keep in mind the context of the weight/size difference which puts what he does into better light (similar to Walker and Armstrong who get highly rated in this regard because they were so 'small' compared to their opponents). And no - it's not the black & white film that makes them seem stronger! :: ::

I think Holyfield might belong there. It is what allowed him to fight heavy even though he was really a cruiser in body size. If you look at Mormeck, that is what Holyfield would be if he did not have extra strength imo.... both guys have the same build and Mormeck loses to guys because he can't physically dominate them in situations where Holy could. Lets not forget Hopkins and Cotto.
dsimon writes: One also has to consider that Firpo was freakishly strong. The guy was built like a bull and had no boxing technique at all. Dempsey was strong ths way for all the reasons mentioned and for not being gored by Firpo.
I think Evander Holyfied should be mentioned. Even though I despised him, Naseem Hamed always struck me as a strong featherweight. African fighters typically tend to be very strong as well. like Ike Quartey, Kassim Ouma and Ike Ibeabuchi. Other fighters that stand out today include Ricky Hatton, Bernard Hopkins, Shane Mosley, Rafeal Marquez, Juan Diaz, Miguel Cotto and Winky@154/160. I guess you can throw in David Tua if he's still considered active.
Hatton DID NOT, "manhandle" Tszyu, he was more tenacious, and had better stamina, but every now and then when Tszyu got sick of the smothering he'd toss Hatton off him and even threw him down at one stage, Hatton typically would snap back on to him like a fridge magnet, and inevitably that'll sap his stamina, but at no stage did Ricky win a "strength" battle :nono: , watch it again.
Just look at him how effortlessly he pushes his opponents off. moves them from shoulders or ties them up when necessary. His punching power was solid but his body strength looks great. I think it was Emmanuel Stewart who said that Holmes was the strongest heavyweight he had worked with
:: I don't think Dempsey showed actual strength with them. Yes he did drive both back but he did that with his furious onslaught and that was the reason neither could get physical with him.
In other words, very often? Because I do enjoy seeing Floyd move up in weight, taking on THE champ of the division in his very first fight, and getting a well-deserved and hard-fought victory. But why do you rewatch Hatton-Zoo? Why do you enjoy seeing Zoo quit over and over and over again?
