Even though he got beat convincingly tonight, I give Jermain credit. He fought a good fight. In fact I think its the best he's EVER fought, Pavlik simply proved he's a better fighter. At 168 if he fights like this he would probably beat everybody w/the exception of Kessler. I dont think Jermain could beat Kessler, but its a fight I'd LOVE to see at 168, should Jermain fight on.
I think Taylor did a good job of not getting hit with as many clean punches tonight and for most of the night, stayed off the ropes well. He would DESTROY Jeff Lacy, and give Kessler a good fight. Pavlik beats all at 160, but I think if he fought Kessler, Calzaghe, and maybe even Jones, he would get outboxed and picked apart. He's really predictable. He had a hard time hitting Jermain tonight and JT is not known for defense. Never has been. Imagine the trouble he'd have hitting either Calzaghe or Jones at the higher weight..
It's funny how sometimes you get more respect in a loss than a win. Good for you Jermain. You belong on the world stage.
I think you need to rewatch the fight. Taylor did well in SPURTS, but for the better part of the fight he was clocked in the face by Pavlik's jab and had little answer. He was also DEFINITELY in serious trouble in the 11th and tired as hell in the 12th. Back in the 15 round days Taylor woulda certainly been stopped, but thats neither here nor there. The bottom line is Pavlik outworked, outjabbed, outlanded, and outlasted Taylor.
Kelly gets picked apart by Calz, and Kessler I agree, but he'd beat the hell outta old man Roy. Of course if we're talking about a prime Roy, he wipes his ass with Kelly. But not this Roy.
I wouldn't even count out old Roy. I don't think Kelly could beat Roy fighting the way he did tonight against Jermain. Pavlik would have alot of trouble finding the target against Roy and I'm not just saying this because of the Trinidad fight. But Roy even now is still a difficult target with fast hands. I doubt Pavlik has an easy time with him.
I was surprised. He looked better than I have seen him look perhaps ever. For once, he actually looked a bit more controlled, and a bit less jittery. Pavlik is simply a better fighter.
Even this Roy has a shot. Kelly is predictable jab straight over and over. Roy could counter Pavliks jab all night and he wouldn't have any trouble hitting Pavlik. His big problem would be laying up against the ropes and getting outworked.
I hope your right. If Roy somehow beat Pavlik it'd be the happiest day of my boxing life, but I cant see it. Double L suggesting that Pavlik could beat a PRIME Roy however is borderline retarded.
Pavlik is one of my favorite fighters, and I hate Calz, HOWEVER objectively speaking, Calzaghe beats the hell outta Pavlik. I said the said after the first fight, and I still feel that way. And I'd pick Kessler over Pavlik also. Dont sleep on Mikkel just because he lost to Joe. Kessler is every bit the technician Pavlik is, only he's faster, has a better defense, and is a far better counterpuncher than Taylor is. I know you dont believe in Kessler, but he's not that robotic. He's alot more athletic than Pavlik is. So was Taylor, but Kessler is far more skilled than Taylor.
All credit to Jermain but am i the only one who thought Pavlik didn't look like the monster of the last fight. His punches didn't seem to hurt Jermain as much as @ 160. I think the weight definitely helped Jermain's stamina and ability to take a punch.
Only punch Jermain really took was the jab. He got his hands up much better then in the first fight. He realised the Winky Wright defence is much better then the Arturo Gatti one.
Pavlik knocks out that overrated robot, I have NO doubt. But Calzaghe is too cagey for Pavlik right now...so I'll take Slappy Joe on that one. Fuck Kessler and his dumbass tattoo. :flip: :: :cheer:
I dont take him seriously. He picked Bumlomir over Floyd, Julio Gonzalez over Roy, and once suggested JL Castillo coulda beaten Whitaker, and Pryor.
dsimon writes: The big problem is that guys like Calzighe and yes even Jones have enough hand speed to be a problem for Kelly. Kelly is smart and cuts the ring down well so he might have an answer but he would have some problems with a guy who had a bit more stamina than Taylor, hand speed and the ability to take a good shot.
dsimon writes: Great post X. I actually think Kessler would be more of a nightmare for Pavlik than Calzighe. Joe's punches are wider, Pavlik's power could be a factor if he could cut the ring off and catch Joe. But Kessler would get there first in every exchange, is actually a stronger counter puncher than Joe.
Taylor was good good defense  made pavlik miss a lot and hit his guard often....made Pavlik look slow and over-calculating alot of the time too in the end it really came down to Pavlik being consistently busier
Taylor succeeded in making Pavlik look like the simple 1-2 fighter that he is...but in doing so, basically took away any chance he had to win the fight. I wasn't impressed at all.
That's kind of what I thought too, but actually I think it was the same Pavlik. It's just that Taylor was being cagier and more negative, and Pavlik gauges his punch power very well, he doesn't waste any big shots. He'll only unleash the big guns if he sees an opportunity. The only time he looked to be punching hard was in the 11th round, when he hurt Taylor.
