Quartey gives a brutal beating to Duran whose clinching tactics wouldn't work against the stronger man. Quartey TKO 8 either by ref stoppage or Duran quits first
No, not 'easily' so at all. Your OTT hatred of Duran just won't lie, will it? :dunno: A long-campaigning, heavy-handed 160lb'er just about beat a blown-up 135-140lb'er on points....Hagler couldnt pull the trigger in that fight and neither would the VASTLY overrated, one-trick-pony that is Ike 'I've-got-a-jab' Quartey. This would be way more brutal than Duran's kicking-the-shit-out-of-Davey-Moore.
Hagler won about ten rounds in that fight. It wasn't close at all, Hagler just laid back and did what he needed to. Had he opened up, Duran would have been busted up. A jab is the key to beat a rushing humping master such as Duran and few welterweights have had better than Quartey. Up close he would be able to push Duran off
I think Quartey might have a very good shot in this fight. He could match Duran's hand-speed (which Hagler or Barkley couldn't) and he could well fight on the inside (which Davey Moore didn't). I think Duran would have hell getting past Quartey's wicked jab, and once he did, he'd have hell with Quartey's tight defense and uppercuts on the inside.
I think many are sleeping on Duran in this matchup. Particularly in discussing Quartey's OVERRATED ASS JAB(yes I said it). This isnt Jose Luis Lopez Ike is jabbing here. Duran would be nearly that stationary, and lets not underrestimate Duran's handspeed and timing, and UNDERESTIMATE Duran's defense, especially on the inside. The most important factor though that none is mentioning is STAMINA. Duran had some of the best stamina in history, while Ike had a history of fading late. I'd take the Duran that beat Palimino & Leonard over Ike by UD, or possibly even a late TKO.
Hagler was fucking tentative in that fight and everyone knows it. :nono: He did the exact opposite of what Hearns had to do a year or so later - if he hadn't of crushed Duran early, he'd have been in deep shit.
