Wikipedia says he passed away on the 6th, but it says he “is” a former boxer rather than “was” a former boxer. It has one link in Spanish, but I haven’t been able to find anything else.
Chris on ESB knows Ortiz and his family personally. I'm trying to see if he posted anything about it.
I follow him on Instagram and I did just see his post on Carlos Ortiz’s passing. He knows a lot of boxers personally so it must be true. I’ll wait for his and other sports media confirmation first.
For the record, I think Ortiz would've beaten Chavez, and would have given Duran and Whitaker tough fights in a losing effort.
RIP. The greatest fighter to come out of Puerto Rico. My top 5 from PR is Ortiz Gomez Benitez Trinidad Torres
RIP to a PR legend. What a fighter and technician. Didn't have the greatest speed or power but was probably the smartest fighter in the ring.
According to Chris, Carlos was close with Gabriel Elorde and his family. And also loved the Philippines as well. Despite defeating the Filipino icon twice they still treated him with such great respect. Always makes me happy when I hear this. Ortiz also recalls his time in the Philippines and how hospitable the people were to him after he defeated Flash Elorde. “If I were to be born again as a boxer, I would move to the Philippines. In the Philippines they treated me as if I was one of them. I fell in love with the Philippines with how well they treated me. They are very good people over there. You don’t have any idea of how well I was treated,” Ortiz told El Nuevo Dia.
Don't forget he SHOULD HAVE gotten a win over Nicolino Locche as well. To be honest I could actually see Ortiz beating Whitaker narrowly in a 15 round fight. Whitaker edges him in a 12 round fight.
Pea was more versatile and talented than Locche though. I'd also add that Whitaker was physically stronger than Locche. Not discounting Ortiz, however. If he and Whitaker fought 10 times, Pea ain't winning all 10. I would give the advantage to Whitaker over Ortiz, close but deserved.
Would be interesting to see how Ortiz does against today's LW era. I think he would have been able to beaten everyone of them such as Haney, Tank, Loma, Lopez, Kambo, Garcia, etc.
First I ever heard of Carlos was reading about how he'd fought a guy called Lou Filippo who went on to play the referee in Rocky movies. Supposedly Filippo was winning when Ortiz unintentionally low-blowed him..
These hacks today have no chance in Hell against Carlos fucking Ortiz . Fimo bum ass can't even beat Bosos. Like honestly, with the exception of Shakur, all the rest of 130-140 is just okay for this era. Loma is good enough to COMPETE in any era, but I sure as fuck dont see Loma hanging with Ortiz.
Yeah he retired early. On account of the cuts. He could have got the win Vs Ortiz but California had a law that no fight could be won on a foul.
I'm gonna leave judgement on Shakur out of this for the moment. He's potentially a great fighter... but its verryyyyyy premature. Haney gets broken down. Tank? LMAOOO!!! Ortiz would beat Tank to death.
Yeah, that's the thing. He was way too smart and complete a technican for a guy like Lopez or Taylor.
I keep saying it, the short explosive man who lacks volume has the worst style of all styles..... Beevol said an interesting thing when he beat Canelo, he said that Canelo tries too hard with every punch. A guy like Tank might if he's lucky get one or two legit openings Vs Ortiz. But he'd be putting everything into every shot like every shot was on. He'd be getting picked apart and broken up. Same as Fimo. I think Loma might be too small to win in any case but would offer Ortiz a few problems for a few rounds. Ortiz was also long and lean. He's not going to have problems finding these bums.
