Totally subjective. Rank the following virtuoso performances based on how impressive you find them: Chavez-Rosario Mayweather-Corrales Jones-Toney Sanchez-Gomez Ali-Liston 1
Corrales, Toney - drained Gomez - small Liston - old and injured Rosario - coke, jack and coke, heroin Based on these factors, I'd rate Jones-Toney the most impressive
I see people bring the James Toney weight drained excuse all the time. Would the fight turnout any different had it taken place at 175?? Considering James had success at HW even beating Holyfield(not prime but still impressive) I'd say the outcome would be much different. I do believe the weight played a big factor in that fight.
I can understand the first two, but I don't get JCC destroying the poor man's Gomez over Sal destroying the real Gomez.
Ali-Liston 1 Sanchez-Gomez Chavez-Rosario Jones-Toney Mayweather-Corrales As much as I like Corrales he did look drained in there. His legs were unsteady from the early rds and obviously Toney is a higher caliber opponent than Corrales that's why Mayweather-Corrales is dead last. With Toney-Jones a close second. Too bad he didnt beat a well trained in shape Toney. Still a good win.
Corrales looked super drained and weak. People talk about Jones-Toney but this was way worse imo. Plus his mindset probably wasn't right considering he was facing a long prison term and his personal life was basically ruined. Definitely wasn't the real Corrales (though it's doubtful it would have made a difference on the final result).
I agree Mayweather beats him but it may have been a closer fight had those two met under different circumstances. I remember driving from Cali to Vegas just to see Corrales whoop Mayweather's ass. I remember fight week leading up to the fight having one of those water cooler conversations about the fight with one of my coworkers at the office. He even thought Corrales would win. He said "mayweather is good but Corrales is mean like a junkyard dog". I also subscribed to several boxing magazines(before youtube and fightnews) and many of the writers were picking Corrales. So you can imagine my surprise driving all the way to vegas and spending the weekend there just to see one of my all time favorite fighters get smacked around all over the ring. Shocking result to say the least.
Good enough. It's all subjective. My ranking would probably be: 1. Jones-Toney 2. Sanchez-Gomez 3. Ali-Liston 4. Chavez-Rosario 5. Mayweather-Corrales That's not me being a Floyd hater. He was amazing in the Chico fight. He's just up against some stiff comp here. Plus, Chico is easily the weakest opponent of the five.
Ali gets a boost because he was by FAR the biggest underdog of the five. Jones and Sanchez were underdogs against Toney and Gomez, but only slightly. Mayweather and Chavez were slight favorites over Corrales and Rosario, respectively. But no one expected a blow out in either fight.
