cdogg would pick the tall dude who little Davey took out with a slingshot over Kovalev and Ward in a boxing match.

To answer the question, even though Foster ranks below Spinks, Jones, and Moore in terms of greatness, h2h I'd probably take a prime Bob over all three.

After Foster, I'd probably go Spinks, Roy, Moore, in that order.

The rest of those guys lose to all four.

Stevenson's bum ass comes in dead last.

Me too ... I mean if they fought 10 times a piece they'd definitely beat him too but I think he wins "the series"

Ezzard's the best, to me and he's got the scalps (including Archie's) to prove it

He kinda did a "who-beats-who" gauntlet in real life

Sly doesn't know who Jimmy Paul is, and he's heard of Carlos Ortiz, but I ASSURE you... he's never seen any footage of him, let alone a full fight.

If there were betting odds on it, Spinks probably enters as the favorite. Simply because of his versatility, his resume, and the fact that he never lost at the weight.

Obviously, Roy's speed and talent makes him a live underdog to win it all.

But it's hard to pick against Foster's ultimate equalizer.

    Agree on all

No one seemed able to get away from his jab either... he just always found a way to dictate everything

I figured that the consensus would be the following top 5 followed by the rest:

Ezzard, Archie, Foster, Spinks and Jones....with Jones in likely the 5th spot. But I was also curious to see how the forum would rank the others against one another and against the legends. This forum has a heavy bias towards established legend and excitement. However we shouldn't let those things by themselves determine outcomes of matchups.

Having said all that...I agree with the top five as mentioned above in this instance. I think the quality of the light heavyweight division has gone down. Modern light heavyweights seem more like blown up Middles and Super middles compared with the huge strong guys of past years.

Foster would be hard to beat given his length and power.....but I think Spinks takes him. I think Jones beats Moore. Ezzard is #1.

As such my top 5 is:

    Ezzard Charles
    Michael Spinks
    Bob Foster
    Roy Jones
    Archie Moore

I think Ward, Hopkins and Kovalev are criminally underrated as historical Lightheavyweights for although not as good as the top 5, they would be competitive at the very least. Moorer it's hard to say. Moorer's chin at 175 is a question. If Moorer had a solid chin at that weight I think he causes all manner of hell to the top 5. But it's a big IF.

I think this forum has a heavy bias towards acting like there is a heavy bias against the current crop

It's become pretty tired at this point. You can't pick any old time fighter over a contemporary guy without being called a nostalgic groupie. Ugo says it just to be a contrarian.

But this dumb, horse faced bastard says it simply because he knows fuck all about any pre-80s fighters not named Ali, Foreman, and Frazier. It's just more convenient for him to believe that contemporary guys are better.

Bernard Hopkins had trouble at 175 with that scrub Pascal.

It's laughable to believe he could be competitive with a Spinks or Foster.

Foster would knock that snaggletooth fuck out COLD at 175.

Seriously though, in my opinion it is literally me and D&M doing this, hardly anyone else. I know two members is a big percentage of FB these days but otherwise I haven't noticed this kind of tendency at all.

Rocky Graziano was a vicious punching, soft-chinned second tier fighter with great managers

He's legit not a top 20 middleweight of the 1940s, never mind all decades

    This.

It's already safe to say that Charlo would have killed Graziano, let alone the middleweight greats.

Graziano was tougher than nails, brown gloves, black and white TV, mob ties, screaming mamagers, gambling, leaded gas and john wayne! Never mind, cars with fins, abusive nuns and wooden toys.
