Saturday, December 11, sees the return of the magnificent 7 card at the Echo Arena, Liverpool, featuring.... Nathan Cleverly vs Alejandro Lakatos Kell Brook vs Michael Clark James DeGale vs Paul Smith Frankie Gavin vs Dean Harrison Matthew Macklin vs Dean Harrison Tony Bellew vs Ovill McKenzie Billy Joe Saunders vs (Opponent yet to be announced). Which fight you looking forward to most? Which fighter has the most promise in your opinion? Can you sense a shock in any of the fights? Also not forgetting of course that night is Derek Chisora vs Wladimir Klitschko and Amir Khan vs Marcos René Maidana, on different cards, at different venues respectively. Great night of boxing it shall be. :bears: :shadow:
To the question regarding promise, haven't seen that much of them all, but I like what I have seen of Gavin.
I think DeGale has the most potential, but he's gonna have to get with a coach who will CALM him the fuck down and stop him trying to play keepy up with his arse in the centre circle. He's the anti-Khan: instead of being a robot he's a 4 year old child after 3 packs of skittles wanting to get everyones attention. But the guy genuinely does have skills, if not the judgement to apply them optimally at the moment. He should still get by Smith, who is rugged & solid but not on DeGale's talent level. Smith is also too circumspect in pressing the action and giving Degale space and time won't help him here. So I've put a little money on DeGlae straddled with DeGale by stoppage on which the odds were fairly enticing, so Im looking forward to this fight most. This is a perfect fight for DeGale at this point.
You don't know it now, but soon James Chunky-Cousin-of-a-QPR-legend-West London-boxer-extraordinaire DeGale will be a legend
I like both Gavin and DeGale. I watched them both live on the katsidis/mitchell undercard and was extrremely impressed with them both. DeGale, in his last fight was exceptional, so i'm hoping for another solid performance from both again.
I really can't wait for this card, especially DeGale-Smith. DeGale has p4p potential IMO. I'm excited too see him in there with the likes of Dirrell, Ward, Dawson etc
Aye, DeGale will make for fantastic match ups with any guys like Martinez, Ward or Dawson. Those'll be the match ups to talk about in boxing in a couple of years.
Great couple of weeks for boxing. The Khan-Maidana, Ortiz-Peterson, Huck-Lebedev & Hopkins-Pascal bouts are all fascinating and we've got allot of one sided beat downs from talented guys like Wlad, Solis & the super 7 to look forward to, too. Viva-boxing!:mj: For the record, gimme Khan by stoppage, Ortiz by wide decision or late stoppage, Lebedev by stoppage and Hopkins-Pascal to go to contentious decision. Wlad, solis & De gale will get their stoppages too.
Definitely. I can see Ward-DeGale being a superfight down the line. If they both stay unbeaten, Ward wins the Super Six, DeGale wins a world title etc... A match up between two Olympic gold medallists and reigning world champions from opposite sides of the pond has the potential to be huge. DeGale is by far my favourite prospect right now, the way he can switch hit so effortlessly and be effective from either stance is a joy to watch.
Ditto. It's a recent trend with fighters actually this new level of switch hitting where it's done fluidly in the approach to exchanges rather than done arbitrarily for certain periods of time like say a Naseem Hamed or Marvin Hagler would. If you watch Pirog's KO of Jacobs for instance you'll see the same type of thing I mean - it can completely turn a guy inside out if it's done right. Duran would do things like that on the inside occasionally too but never so systematically. <object width="640" height="385"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/yyzX6WhJ-f4?fs=1&hl=en_US"></param><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><param name="allowscriptaccess" value="always"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/yyzX6WhJ-f4?fs=1&hl=en_US" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true" width="640" height="385"></embed></object>
He's a joy to watch indeed. That KO was my pick for best of the year until Martinez spasticked Williams the other week, THE perfect example of what we were talking about. DeGale-Pirog would be a wonderful tactical battle to watch. I'd like to see an all-Russian affair between him and Korobov down the line too.
Pirog-Martinez would be high level stuff. That and Dawson-Ward are almost as high level as Pac-Floyd. (Obviously Dawson has to sort that Pascal debacle out first)
I just want to mention that it´s not necessary to chase down James DeGale fights on the net like he´s the next Sugar Ray Leonard. So far he has only beaten local bums, and is two years away, oh no Frank Warren. He is five years away from fighting a legit top ten fighter.
Smith is a very good step up for a guy in his 9th pro fight. Not only is Smith a British champion but a rather good one. At this rate he'll be at European level within a fight or two and in title contention, within 18 months at the most. He's being moved along at least as fast as say Floyd was, who fought a guy who was 1-13 (11) in his 9th fight.
