It seems to me that most people that were Roy Jones fans are also Floyd Mayweather fans. This makes sense, because both fighters are among the most skilled in history and the things that we appreciate about Roy...speed, elusiveness, ring generalship, smarts etc can also be seen in Floyd. However, there are those that seem to have liked Roy but root against Floyd. Muzse springs to mind. And there are those that hated Roy but are kinda fans of Floyd. Cupey springs to mind. Of course there are those that hate both. Double L springs to mind. So, in which camp are you. And why?
I think Roy and Floyd were very different fighters, its a pretty meaningless comparison saying they are both quick or elusive as they achieved that in a different manner, I don't see how being a fan or one might mean being fan of the other is a sure thing...
Of course no two fighters fight alike, but I think that they are pretty comparable in terms of being master boxing slick geniuses that are/were very versatile and multi dimensional and have been known to completely shut out other very good fighters...in many virtuoso performances...and have respectable KO percentages to boot.
I wasn't a 'fan' as such at the time of his rule, but since he's started to fade, and Fraud has been desperately elevated to prominence , I sulk for his return, he was special, he truelly DOMINATED opponents, he's so far superior to Fraud in every concieveable way possible, in retrospect we never had it so good, his style was spectacular and unique, his personality, as irritable and egotistical as it would become occasionally, is still more tolerable than a transparent, mean spirited, dumb sociopath animal, he's like a mosquito buzzing around the honey-pot, with a blunt needle, but ex-Jones groupies who clamour over the hybrid symbolism of skin colour and undefeated records, are tearing open boxing's immune system, and allowing the little mutant to suck the blood clean out of the sport. :flip: Vote Mosely.
Fan of Roy, not a fan at all of Pretty Boy. No love for fake thugs. Roy had style, Floyd's just a 2 faced joker who's in the forefront because everybody else is now shot.
nah...they are different fighters. jones was the perfect combination of speed and power and in his prime it was suicide to try and engage him directly. roy jones' handspeed/reflexes were like barry sanders legs...it didn't seem real. floyd on the other hand, his skillset is what sets him apart from his contemporaries. jones could hurt people with single shots whereas floyd has to accumulate punishment before his punches start to really hurt his opponent...
Not a fan of either....both seem to want to get away with giving the least of themselves as feasably possible, both in the fights they accept and in the performances they give inside the ring. Neither really felt the need to PROVE their greatness, they just feel ENTITLED to be regarded as great because of their talent. Kind of representative of black American culture in general in the late 90s->, IMHO...nothing seems to be more revered than getting rich without having to sweat or get your hands dirty.:: Workings for suckers.
What EXACTLY would an Early 20's, NON American KNOW about "90's Black American Culture"???:dunno: ... U've Watched Tooooooooo Many MOVIES, Homey... REED
If you are NOT black, I take serious offense to this! :nono: But that aside....Floyd and Roy have both fought formidable fighters and have both shown heart and desire when it was required of them. You are therefore wrong on all counts.
thats why I put the laughing icon, dude. I dont expect the comment to be taken completely seriously. Im not a sociologist its pretty much a throw away remark. But you cant deny theres something to it. What is the fuck is modern hip hop culture about other than ostentatious displays of wealth completely divorced from any sign that its been worked for? I dont need to live in the US, I have MTV and its wall to wall. It goes beyond hip hop as well, reality TV, manufactured pop stars etc. Many people feel somehow entitled to be famous, rich and revered without having to work for it...in my mind guys like Floyd & Roy are the manifestation of that trend in boxing. Maybe the two things are unrelated, but I reckon they're products of their time/culture and because of the chip-on-shoulder mindset they'll both go down as wastes of talent.
Fan of Floyd, indifferent about Roy. The only time I really rooted for Roy was the Tarver rematch. I was tired of Tarver's whining after losing a fair decision when his own inactivity and leeryness of bodywork cost him the fight. So naturally, Roy was forced to lean back.
REED Seriously DOUBTS that U even KNOW a "Black American" PERSONALLY... But Because U "Have MTV" U're an AUTHORITY on the Subject Now???...:dunno: R U Fucking SERIOUS, Dude???:: ... There's a PLETHORA of Hip Hop Acts who Couldn't Care LESS about Fame or Monetary Trappings...Common, Mos Def, the Roots, Talib Kweli...But it's DOUBTFUL to REED U've EVER even Heard of these Cats...They're NOT in Heavy Rotation on MTV, yet ARTISTICALLY they're Amongst THE Most RESPECTED Acts in All of Hip Hop... Sorry, but REED IS "Denying" that there's "Something" to your Statements...AGAIN, U're in your EARLY 20's, U're a WHITE, NON-American & U Probably have NEVER even Conversed w/a SINGLE Black American in Person...U Couldn't B MORE WRONG in what U Say... Not Really Sure what Entitles YOU To B Soooooooo Fucking PRESUMPTUOUS, but Out of RESPECT, REED Asks that U Chill Out on that Shit, Dude... As for Roy & Floyd, Name 2 Fighters who Worked HARDER @ their Craft???...Name ONE Time Roy OR Floyd Showed Up for a Fight OUT of Shape???...Shit, THROUGHOUT their Careers, U'd B HARD PRESSED to Catch Roy or Floyd even 5 lbs OVER their FIGHTING WEIGHT, N btwn Bouts... They Feel "Entitled" to Fame & Riches Cause they've Been COMMITTED to the Sport of Boxing Since ELEMENTARY School, SACRIFICING Things like Team Sports, Friendships, Girlfriends, Keg Parties, Junk Food, etc... But All YOU Look @ is the Arrogant Ringwalks or Boastful Post-Fight Interviews...Hard Work bREEDs Confidence... REED
i think the only thing that legitimately ties these two fighters together is the fact that both are/were rated P4P #1, and neither one at the time deserved to be. in other words, the only common denominator here is the great extent to which each is/was over-rated. also, both take/have taken advantage of HBO's contract in order to set up crap match-ups and fight easy competition on non-PPV dates.
This is boxing. This ain't singing where you go on American pop idol for a couple of weeks and get a easy living thru no work. Boxing is the toughest sport out there and both Roy and Floyd dedicated their lives to boxing.
Roy and Floyd are known as two of the hardest workers in boxing. Furthermore, I would say that a pro fighter with just average training habits works EXTREMELY hard for the money they earn.
REED, I will PM you my reply to this mate, because, this whole area of discussion cant possibly lead this thread anywhere good.
Fan of Roy and basically indefferent towards Floyd. I don't hate Mayweather, but i wouldn't consider myself a fan either. He's the best fighter on the planet bar none though.
Huge fan of Roy, not a fan of Floyd. Both have huge egos though Roy is more of an introvert than extrovert. Floyd craves attention whereas Roy doesn't. In his prime, Roy had reflexes and physical gifts no other fighter (save Ali perhaps) ever had. Floyd has supreme boxing skills which made you think of the best fighters in history. Therein lies the difference to me. One emulates skills with the best there ever was, there other represents things we'd never seen. In their respective primes, I'd take Roy all day long.
He's the best fighter in his weight class. To be the best on the planet means he could beat everybody walking the earth.:: :tease:
