From Fightnews: The World Boxing Council Heavyweight world champion Oleg Maskaev, from Kazakhstan-Russia, suffered a multiple disc herniation injury which will provoke his being inactive, at least for the next 3 or 4 months according to his lawyer, which would lead this division to 14 months without activity. Consequently, his fight against official challenger Samuel Peter from Nigeria, scheduled for October 6th at Madison Square Garden, will not take place. Consequently, and to avoid the fact that the WBC Heavyweight division remains frozen, the WBC Board of Governors has conclusively voted to name Nigerian boxer Samuel Peter as the WBC Heavyweight interim world champion. Rules 1.26 (4) and 1.27 of the WBC Rules and Regulations explicitly allows the WBC, in an instance where an interim title is applicable, to recognize as interim champion the winner of a previous elimination fight. Samuel Peter won not only one, but two final elimination bouts in a row against James Toney in September 2006, and in January 2007. Rules 1.26 and 1.27 read: 1.26 Vacant Title. If a title becomes vacant for any reason, the Board of Governors may in its discretion take whatever steps or actions it deems necessary or appropriate to fill the title, including but not limited to: 1) authorize and cause to be instituted a tournament or elimination contest among leading available contenders in the division of the vacant title, with the winner being recognized as the new champion; or 2) authorize or cause to be instituted a direct bout between the two highest rated available boxers and recognize the winner as the champion; or 3) appoint as challenger the champion of a lower or higher division to contend against the highest rated available boxer of the division for the vacant title; or 4) recognize as champion the winner of a previous elimination bout. This list is non-exclusive. The Board of Governors may impose such conditions as it deems proper and necessary in its discretion upon the new champion winning a vacant title, including but not limited to: 1) designating the boxer against whom the first defense of the title must be made (who may be selected from the highest rated available boxers or a boxer selected through a final elimination bout); 2) ordering the new champion to make his first mandatory defense within ninety (90) to one hundred and twenty (120) days of acquiring the title; 3) if requested and feasible, to approve one voluntary defense, with the condition that the winner must meet his official mandatory challenger next. This list is also non-exclusive. 1.27 Interim Championship. The WBC may order an interim title bout when a world champion will be temporarily inactive and unable to defend his title for a period to exceed 6 months due to: a) certified medical reasons b) a legal impediment c) a reasonable cause strictly beyond his control. In ordering the interim championship, the WBC will follow any of the steps mandated in Rule 1.26. If the inactivity is estimated to exceed one (1) year, the title shall be declared vacant. Upon the return of the champion, the WBC will order a mandatory bout for the undisputed WBC title with the interim champion. Both boxers are bound to participate in this bout and cannot participate in an intervening contest, except in special circumstances approved by a majority vote of the Board of Governors. If the bout is promoted through purse offer procedures, the purse split will be 55% for the champion and 45% for the interim champion. The WBC may alter this split at its discretion pursuant to the provisions of Rule 2.11(d). If the champion does not return after a year of inactivity, he will forfeit the title to the interim champion, who will automatically become the undisputed WBC champion. The World Boxing Council will present interim world champion Samuel Peter his WBC interim world champion title in the following days.
Good, Sam deserves it. He's a hard fighter that has improved his technique and stamina and IMO is the man to beat.
Seems like the WBC never wanted him as champion, but had to do something to avoid another court problem
Everything's so damn slow-moving in this division. It's gotten to the point where guys are fighting maybe once a year now. These guys can be out there fighting at least 4 times a year. :dunno:
Hell its to the point where fighters are literally given titles without having to fight for them. Let's see if Peter follows in Ken Norton's footsteps, and concedes the title in his first defense, thus becoming the only two heavyweights titlists to never ever actually win a heavyweight title fight. With all of these injuries and everyone else's unwillingness to fight one another, the division needs to fast forward to Wlad-Peter II. The WBC should just strip Maskaev altogether, and other heavyweights should show enough restraint to force him to retire without the opporunity to cash out.
Its all about the chedda, since Oleg's on the shelf they need someone else to mooch off of so they invented an interum WBC belt for Peter so they won't lose any cake:: then when they do fight they'll have double the sanctioning fees because there both champions.................am I the only one who thinks this is a joke?:dunno:
you gonna ask this everytime the subject comes up? :: everyone (well, most of us) think its a joke. most of us have simply moved on, and choose to ignore it. If you can't kill it, ignoring it is the next best option. when promoters and more importantly fighters begin to follow suit, we'll be onto something. but no, nobody in their right mind will refer to Sam Peter as a legit heavyweight champion, at least not with a straight face.
Sadly, it's looking like Peter-Jameel McCline for the WBC interim title. Showtime rejected Golota as an opponent, and Oliver McCall (the highest available contender) supposedly priced himself out.
Apparently McCall get s paid well for his gig with Gomez. :: McCline is still better than Golota. Hopefully DeCline´s won´t be too scared.
Good. Last thing i would want is a 40 year old golota with an agressive guy who has an iron chin and can punch a little..
Wlad already whipped that ass...Wlad is the man to beat...and since nobody is beating wlad that just makes wlad THE MAN :bears:
the worst thing about this is that in the next HBO Telecast they will again talk to Lennox about sorting out the heavyweight division and mention how he was the last "undisputed" champion. blah blah blah! He will say that the division is up for grabs and we'll see who is hungry enough to be the man blah blah blah:doh: ::
If the reports are right, then McCall is getting $400,000 for the Gomez rematch, as opposed to the $100,000 he was offered for the Peter fight. If that was really the offer, then what I don't get is how Showtime saved money on V.Klit's latest withdrawal, and now Maskaev pulling out, yet there's only $100,000 available for a last-minute replacement?
Wlad didn't whip his ass. When he was in trouble he held like a python and should have been disqualified. Peter will finish the job on the clutch artist next time around.
And, make no mistake about it, if he does, that will be as close as he ever gets to emulating Norton. That and doing the patented Norton Shuffle in the 12th vs Wlad.
The hell he didn't whip his ass. CLEAR cut victory for Wlad. I'm starting to wonder if you really ever laced them up.
True that. Wlad won 10 out of 12 rounds and actually finished the fight stronger. Anybody with understanding of boxing should see that
What did Peter do to win 7 or more rounds? You never laced them up, I understand this to be true now.
What a homoerotic sig you have. Who is the creampuff on the left?? Naked men, is it?? I have my doubts about you Stinger, can't figure out if you are fish or fowl!!!
And for the last knockdown Fat Sam stood on Wlads foot and pushed him. Fat Sam Peter, Y2K07 answer to Primo Carnera. Just without the title.
That is perhaps the greatest swimmer ever and the best Tarzan ever, Johnny Weismuller. Only Ruth and Dempsey were more famous athletes at the time he captured his Olympic Gold Medals. Weismuller could have broken you into a hundred pieces, btw. You make fun of my sig with that crap in yours? Another bites the dust...on ignore.
