What are some shitty performances by fighters who had already established themselves as elite?

Pacquiao/Solis - Pacquiao, following his dominant second KO of Morales looked like absolute shit against Solis. Why?

PBF/Baldomir - PBF looked like utter shit and fought like a puss.

    Toney/Reggie Johnson

    Toney/Tiberi

I personally thought Pacquiao looked far less like an elite fighter when he fought Larios than against Solis.

Floyd fought with passion for the first six rounds or so against Baldy, then hurt his hand(s?) and played keepaway for the rest of the fight.

If Jermain Taylor ever qualified for star status, then his fights with Ouma and especially Spinks warrant mention for this discussion.

Curry letting the strong but one dimensional Honeyghan dominate him still puzzles the hell outta me :dunno:

Hopkins giving away both Taylor fights for me. Taylor was a stylistic problem for him, but mainly Hops just paced himself to the extend of giving the early rounds away. Hops must have been extremely tight at the weight on top of being old. Either way he should have sorted shit out properly in the rematch.

Floyd was pretty shitty vs Victor Sosa.

Roy was shitty vs Eric Harding, after coming off 3 great performances vs Johnson, Telesco, and Hall.

Actually I seem to remember him dropping about 3 rounds to Sosa. Being boring vs Bumlomir is one thing, cause Bumolmir is big and has a great chin. But theres no excuse for Floyd not destroying Sosa.

mayweather jr had an injured right hand going into the sosa fight, and only used his left for the most part. beat sosa 11-1

Injury or not, it was still an off night for Floyd. Thats the point. I remember after that fight everyone on here was talking about how Tszyu would murder Floyd. In hindsight, no he wouldnt have.

a shitty performance by mayweather jr. was against delahoya, who wasnt a good fighter at that point. the worst performance of his career losing 4 rounds to that part timer

Mosley- Forrest rematch. The first fight was way less competitive but Mosley showed a lot of heart and took his beating like a man. The rematch was just terrible.

there was something very clearly wrong with Curry that night... he fought nothing like he had the previous 20 plus fights... looked like a different fighter... the closest he ever came to looking like DONALD CURRY again was against McCallum whom he was beating with ease until BOOM! one of the best Left Hooks ever thrown finished him off, really once and for all

Sans him quitting I don't think that really qualifies. It was close to even when the end happened. Duran-Benitez was a far more half arsed performance by Duran....he had definitely lost his mojo by that point.

Corrales sure coasted into the ring for his rematch with Castillo, after the first fight brought him untold fame & attention. His subsequent performance was abysmal.

the only reason anyone would know that is because Mayweather constantly talks about his injuries... this is a brutal sport, I am sure MOST fighters are less than 100% most of the time

How does the level of competition factor in?

Inevitably when you bring up a list of a fighter's best performances, you get responses like "Yeah he looked great against that bum ..."

"Worst" performances can have just as much to do with the opponent as does the present condition of the star fighter.

    Bingo!!!

I agree. Solis was awkward as hell and employed some kind of weird south-paw neutralization program (Kauki help me with the terminology).

Likewise, Baldomir's style is a one and only freak-fest. Forrest mastered it, PBF couldn't.

Reggie Johnson is a clever fucking fighter.

I don't know what you mean by that. The Forrest-Baldomir fight was more entertaining but that's about it.

Mayweather schooled him as expected. Yeah it was boring but it didn't take anybody as boxing schooled as Floyd to "master" Baldomir.

    Utter mismatch.
