Me and a couple of my buddies once had a Stallone movie evening. Everybody had to bring a movie starring Stallone and we were supposed to watch them all. I brought Stop Or My Mom Will Shoot and I nearly got kicked out. True story .

What is your take of him? Underrated as an actor, who can do well if the role suits him? Talentless hack? Charismatic star for silly action movies? Great comedian?

I would have crushed your stupid Finnish skull and spinal column for such insubordination and stupidity.

    Sylvester Stallone is a HoF'er.

Amazing charisma and camera presence that far exceeded his underrated acting skills. There are many actors today who may be able to out act him, but so very few who can command the screen the way he could. Look how many guys they’ve tried to make into movie stars who just didn’t have the charisma to pull it off, guys like Sam Worthington, Taylor Kitsch even Tom Hardy to a certain extent. Those guys could never do like Sly and turn B movies into blockbusters. Sly could act when the role required it, but more often than not he just leaned on his charisma.

Largely awful, IMO ... he's really only effective when physically doing something

And his bad films suffer from his lack of a sense of humor or likability

There's no "Commando" among his (numerous) shitty films... Schwarzenegger had a sense of humor, the ability to laugh at himself so even in bad movies he can be entertaining and the experience enjoyable... Compare, for example "Cobra"... Stallone clearly thinks he's making some sort of serious statement... the result is a disgrace. A stomach-churning, infuriatingly stupid fascist cartoon with zero sense of humor or self-awareness... that's the difference and the reason why Schwarzenegger's films were so much more enjoyable

The films Stallone is in that succeed largely do so in spite of him... for example, Nighthawks works in spite of massive plot holes because of Rutger Hauer and good pacing ... First Blood succeeds because of Dennehy, good direction and the fact that Stallone doesn't say much (to say nothing of the fact that the film makes it basically impossible to dislike Stallone by victimizing him to a ridiculous degree) ... The only film that succeeds because of him is the very first Rocky where his convoluted, shitty overacting actually works because the character is such a palooka

But a look through the Stallone filmography is a steady stream of utter mediocrity... largely witless, charmless action films and a handful of embarrassing attempts at either respectability or levity

I actually enjoyed "Stop or my Mom will Shoot". Not a memorable film by any stretch of the imagination, but it is disposable fun popcorn entertainment.

The fifth one isn't good but it's enjoyable

Stallone just for the fact that he gave the world 'Rocky' is a legend. Probably one of the greatest and most memorable franchises ever in Hollywood history. The music, the training scenes, even the over the top boxing scenes...it inspired everyone. Even people who hated boxing love the films and were inspired and are still inspired by it to this day. Stallone is awesome!
First Blood was awesome too. I also enjoyed Cobra and Over The Top. Stallone is one of the greats.

Anyone who can be that critical is a worthless f*ck who achieved nothing in their sh*t lives. First Blood succeeded because of the whole cast, not just f*cking Dennehy. And Rocky is one of the greatest film franchises ever. Stop being a twat, cdogg.

I can't agree with that entirely, and I'll give you a perfect example: Demolition Man.

Clearly an example of Stallone knowing he's in a ridiculous movie, and just having fun with it.

Disagree ... I don't see any of that in that film

Even this Expendables crap which is built entirely on irony fails to be convincing in that regard ... the guy thinks he's Orson Welles

Sly knows his own limitations. He knows he no Orson Welles, but he likes to have complete control of his own projects, which for the most part, he has been successful at. He already got an Oscar in his shelf from early in his career so he sticks at what he excels and doesn't try to be a Daniel Day Lewis which he knows he could never be.

Mate..........Rocky is one of the best movies ever made. Ironically, the actual fight scenes are the worst part of it.

The storyline, the acting, the script, the extras {like Butkus, Cuff and Link, the petshop angle, the ice rink} all brilliant.

    Soundtrack for Rocky is brilliant.

The character of Paulie might just be the greatest anti-hero in all of movie franchise history.

Trust me, I know all about this stuff, I know about this stuff, I'll break your arms so they don't work for you. I don't sweat you.

Rocky II, III, IV etc were all shit, but had great soundtracks.

Stallone wrote Rocky in 3 days. It's better than anything that will appear at the Oscars this year, next year, etc.

I agree he has made a lot of shit.

But Rocky is an ageless timeless classic.

Hell........the first 10 minutes of Rocky II are better than any of the films nominated for best picture this year.

Of course any movie that succeeds because Brian Dennehy in it must have been an exceedingly bad movie to begin with.

But Rocky is an absolute keeper.

Of course the fact that Rocky is on ITV1 as I type is neither here nor there.

    But.......so many great performances.

Weathers, Shire, Meredith, Stallone, Young, Tony Burton ...........etc etc etc all turned in stellar performances.

I don't think that as far as a script and brilliant individual and collective performances were turned in again like that until Goodfellas in 1990.

Rocky still had no business winning Best Picture.

Not over Taxi Driver, and Network.

With the benefit of hindsight I would say Rocky is a better picture than Taxi Driver.

3 hours of Travis Bickle and his fucking problems. Damn. Be like listening to me.

Tony Burton was on the set of The Shining where he had 2 small parts, and wound up staying 6 weeks on set because he was the only person there who could give Kubrick a good game of chess. So Kubrick kept him on. Just let that sink in, a former Chino jailbird and Golden Gloves boxer from tough ass 19550's Michigan, being kept around because he was a tough chess player and kept the director entertained.

The reason you don't have great films today is because you don't have great people today.

Just a bunch of pussies, basically.
