Two action classics. Neither one ever ever gets old. Die Hard is better, but Speed is the shit!

It's a movie. Since when was absolute realism a prerequisite for a good movie?

Yeaaa.... just like it's believable that one alcoholic cop.... with the help of Carl Winslow.... can defeat any entire group of German terrorists all by himself.

Like Sly said... they're movies... not only movies... ACTION movies.

Action movies don't have to be realistic to be great.... cause really, NONE of them are realistic. None!

Of course it didn't! But it didn't make the movie any less fun.

What ultimately hurts Speed when compared to Die Hard is that Hans Gruber was a much better villain than Howard Payne (Dennis Hopper).

Not that Hopper did a bad job, but I wonder how much better Speed could have been if the villain role was played by say.... Christopher Walken.

Walken in place of Hopper would have made Speed even better.

LOL. Keanu gets a lot of hate, but he was actually pretty good in Speed.

Nothing really "ruined" Speed. It's an awesome movie.

But, "like I said before", if there was any change I could make... I'd swap out Dennis Hopper for someone like Christopher Walken, or Gary Oldman.

Die Hard by a country mile. Best Christmas movie ever. LOL at Speed. Point Break is better than Speed and I'm not calling that a classic.

Point Break is NOT NOT better than Speed.

But agreed on the first part. Die Hard is the best Christmas movie ever. Not only that, it's the best R-Rated action movie of all time.

Second best action movie of the 80s, only behind Raiders.

Die Hard was really ahead of its time. It came out only a year after Lethal Weapon, yet it still feels new and fresh.

Lethal Weapon is dated as Hell.

Please don't mention Die Hard in the same sentence as raiders of the Lost Ark.

ROTLA is in a class of it's own. GREAT GREAT film.

Wow best R rated action film? Man I'd have to think that over. A lot of good R rated stuff particularly 80s R which I think gets downgraded now. DH would feature right at top of the list if not the very top.

How did I compare them? I didn't say Die Hard was as good. I said AFTER Raiders, Die Hard is the second best action of the 80s.

Die Hard is pretty much the action movie which every other action movie copies from. It is the winner here, although Speed is also very, very good.

I remember many people groaning when it was announced that Bruce Willis, the tv comedian from 'Moonlighting' and the star of two consecutive movie flops, 'Blind date' & 'Sunset', was being paid $5 million dollars (at the time the highest salary ever for an unproven box office star) for an action film titled 'Die Hard'. Many thought the studio execs had lost their minds and were eagerly awaiting for the film to bomb as no one could take Willis seriously as an action star.

    LOL

Willis is a bad boy action star. I tend to enjoy his films.

I preferred The Jackal to Die Hard though. I love that film, even though the wooden Sidney Poitier does his best to ruin it.

Have you watched the original The Day of the Jackal (1973)? I think the original was better. Edward Fox was more convincing than Willis as the very calculated cold English assassin.

The Jackal was a mediocre movie. I can't say it's a bad movie, but it definitely isn't remotely close to Die Hard. It would have been better, IMO, if the roles of Willis/Gere were reversed.

Richard Gere can play a villain better than Bruce Willis, as he proved in Internal Affairs.

I loved The Jackal. Willis was GREAT as the villain....he was one scary motherfucker...cold and clinical. Good story, memorable characters, nice twists etc.

Far more quality film than Die Hard, IMO.
