The Force is strong with this one...

Thursday night record: $57 million leaving in the dust the previous record of $43.5 million held by 2011's Harry Potter & The Deadly Hallows Part 2

Friday single opening day record: $120 million beating the $91 million record established by the same 'Harry Potter' film from 2011.

Counting the international grosses the Disney/Lucasfilm production has grossed north of $250 million worldwide in in a span of a little more than 30 hours.

Fandango reported this past Monday that 'Star Wars: The Force Awakens' had sold over $100 million in advanced tickets, an unheard and unprecedented amount in the history of that company and that more tickets kept selling as days passed.

I'll keep updating these numbers on Sunday.

Bit of an obvious thread, really?

Thanks for this...and yes, please do keep updating us on how much this movie is making.

    Ladies, germs and fags:

we have a new three days box office champion.

Star Wars: The Force Awakens set a new record by grossing $238 million in domestic box office besting by far the previous record of $208.8 million established by Jurassic World this past summer. The J.J. Abrams sci-fantasy film more than doubled the previous all time December record of $84.6 million set by The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey in 2012.

The next record that The Forces Awakens needs to equal or surpass is 'fastest film to reach a global $1 billion in revenue' which is 13 days established by 'Jurassic World'. That one will be more difficult: the T-Rex sequel/reboot opened simultaneously in the lucrative market of China where it grossed $100 on its first thee days while 'Star Wars', whose franchise isn't as well known there, will debut on January 09.

Yes. Keep in mind that those films started in the 90s and relations with China were not as bad as in 1977 during the Cold War as none of the original SW trilogy were even heard of in China. All they got was bootlegs of the prequels. Plus everybody around the world loves dinosaurs.

95% on Rotten Tomatoes! Deserves every bit of that. Great film.

Oh, I almost forgot that they were other movies trying to do some business this week. In totally STUPID decision of counterprograming two new releases crashed & burned upon arrival: Alvin & The Chipmunks Road Chip took the second spot with an abysmal $14.4 million, the worst opening in the history of this franchise. It will very tough for this $75 budget film to recoup its investment even at a global scale after such an atrocious opening. Not faring better was the extremely hyped (by its two leading stars who tried everything to lure non-star wars fans & women to watch their film) Sisters which took the third spot with $13.4 million. The $30 million comedy also will have a hard time recouping its investment and forget the international market as most American comedies like this one don't fare well outside the USA and for the most part don't even get distribution abroad.

In the fourth spot is the four weeks champ The Hunger Games: Mockingjay Part 2 which took $5.6 million for a domestic total of $254 million in five weeks. The last film in the Katniss Everdeen franchise continues underperforming in comparison with previous entries, but don't think they are losing money: with a budget of $160 million the District 12th heroine has made so far and counting $595 million worldwide. Jennifer Lawrence has expressed having no interest in a 'prequel' as the studio has been hinting lately and has tagged those plans as 'too soon for that'.

Holding nicely even in the face of a behemoth like Star Wars is Creed which keeps adding figures like the one from this week, $5 million, week-after-week for a four weeks cumulative of $87 million. If it continues behaving like this it will reach the $100 million mark in the next few weeks. Sequel anyone?

Not doing so well: In The Heart of The Sea had an terrible 2nd week drop of 68% and from the #2 spot last week went down to number 8 with $3.4 million. But that was nothing compared to the plunge The Night Before took: 72.2% drop and went on a freefall from #6 last week to #14 this week with $1.1 million. I guess it will not be playing in theaters the night before Christmas.

last but not least: two Bollywood films sneaked into the top ten out of nowhere taking the #9 & #10 spots. Does this means that we are having in increase in Hindis immigration or suddenly a chunk of the American population suddenly likes Bollywood films? :scratcher:

    Thanks Obama!!!

Initially it was 97% fresh, with only 3 rotten reviews, but then 12 idiots, mostly non-top critics, trying very hard to get attention by being the discordant voices among a sea of positive reviews, gave such awful reviews that left you wondering what their real agenda was. As for the four sole top critics with rotten reviews all I can say is: no one knows who the hell are you guys!...and Stephanie Zacharek cannot hold a candle to the legendary late Richard Corliss as Time magazine's movie critic.

    Monday actuals update:

It turns out that the Sunday's estimates were too conservative. Star Wars: The Force Awakens opened much bigger than initially reported with a domestic cume of $248 million AND surpassed the global record of 'Jurassic World' with $529 million. And SW did this feat without China's revenue! Watch out, 'Avatar', you are NEXT!!!! :Bad:

Nothing to do with your 'appreciation' thread, then.

Worldwide Star Wars has done US$530 million in 5 days....so it will either trail off dramatically and just make the alltime Top-10 or it will sweep past Avatar's record sometime about....3 weeks' time

Star Wars: The Force Awakens will beat another record today when it surpasses the $400 million domestically in just 8 days of release. Jurassic World had the record with 10 days. 'The Force Awakens' most likely will surpass 'Jurassic World' second weekend record of $106 million. By how much is the real question. The Lucasfilm scifi epic might or might not also break the dinosaur reboot record of fastest film to reach $1 billion globally. Jurassic World benefitted from having grossed $168 million from China up to that point, numbers that the Force will not have. If it still ties or beats the $1 billion mark in 13 days that will be a testament to the power of this franchise.

    HOLY COW!!
STAR WARS: THE FORCE AWAKENS has annihilated so many records its becoming a chore to keep pace with the numbers.
First: best Christmas day record: $49.6 million leaving in the dust the prior one from 'Sherlock Holmes' of $29 million.
Second: All time best second weekend grosses: $153.5 million putting in shame the 'Jurassic World' prior record of $106 million.
Third: Fastest film to reach $1 billion globally: The Force surpassed the $1 billion mark ($1.1 billion) in just 10 days (11 if you count the opening Thursday night). "Jurassic World" reached $1 billion in 13 days AND with China grosses.

Thanks to the Star Wars phenomenon all the other films showing on theaters this weekend rode on its wave and did great business. So well, in fact, that when all is said and done it will have a total net of $300 million, making it the biggest Christmas weekend at the movies ever and the second biggest weekend movie-going grosses in history!

I seen it, i liked it. I like the fact they added lot's of time between the Episode 6 and this one. Which means they can do prequels in which we can see more Harrison Ford and how his relationship with Leah and their son got fucked up.

    Episodes 6.3, 6.6 & 6.9?

I see no need for that.

This film was good though. I can't weight for episode 8 ("Triumph of the First Order", "First Order Retribution"?)

I heard it was a lot of fun but basically a fan-friendly re-tread of the very first Star Wars

I'm not sure I'll go to the theater to watch it

Ford is not coming back. He is done with this franchise, but there will be a 'young Han Solo' stand-alone film with a younger actor in the role.

    Third week Report:

Star Wars: The Force Awakens continues its supreme dominance at the box office and, *yawn* breaking more box office records. The Lucasfilm saga took an estimated $88.3 million this weekend, which in itself could be a huge opening for any blockbuster film, making it the biggest January weekend ever and the biggest third weekend for any film ever. Not only that, 'The Force Awakens' reached $740 million in domestic grosses in 16 days. It took 'Avatar' 72 days to reach that number. By Monday night the new 'Star wars' will have taken 'Avatar' record as the highest grossing domestic film ever. After that is pure speculation how high this film's numbers will be at the end of its run. A few are daring to predict it can reach $1 billion domestically. At the pace it is going, that would not be so far fetched. On the global scale, it is now seating at the #6 spot of the All Time Highest grossing films with only a few millions away from taking the spots#5 & #6 held by 'Furious 7' and 'The Avengers: Age of Ultron'. Before next Friday it might have left behind the #3 spot currently held by "Jurassic World". Can it beat 'Titanic" out of the #2 spot with $2.1 billion?

Daddy's Home continues benefitting from the 'Star Wars' tsunami and added $29 million to its stash for a two weeks total of $93.6 million. While the Will Ferrell/Mark Wahlberg comedy has atrocious reviews, it has become the perfect counterprograming for 'Star wars': people that went to the movies and couldn't get seats for 'Star wars' are then opting for this one, not exactly a crowd pleaser, but the marketing department did an excellent job selling this film. The studio needs to give a bonus to whoever came with the idea to pit this film against Star Wars in its second week as many observers point out that at any other time this movie would have bombed.

But not every film out there is riding on the Force wave.

Quentin Tarantino's The Hateful Eight expanded to 2,474 screens and landed in the third spot with $16.2 million. While that is not a bad figure, it is very disappointing for a Tarantino film. In fact only 'Jackie Brown', his only box office dud, opened lower with $9.3 million, and that was in 1997. Next weekend will be crucial for this film as it will have direct competition from another high profile rated R snowbound shoot 'em up in Leonardo DiCaprio's The Revenant. Plus 'Star Wars' isn't going anywhere yet. If it gets hurt by the Dicaprio film, 'the Hateful Eight' will be struggling to recoup its investment domestically.

Holding well in its third week is Sisters which remains in the fourth spot with $12.5 million for a three weeks total of $61.7 million. This was the film its studio was betting was going to be the perfect 'Star Wars' counterprograming option. Somehow they were wrong, but the film, bad reviews and all, has indeed benefitted from 'The Force" but not to the extent they were expecting (damn you, Will Ferrell!!!).

And in the fifth spot again is Alvin & The Chipmunks: The Chip Road which took $11.8 million for a three weeks total of $67.1 million.

And on a side note, Creed surpassed the $100 million mark this weekend and currently ranks #4 most successful of the Rocky franchise.

What the hell are you talking about? Read again what I wrote, moron! The #2 position I mentioned is for the worldwide market where 'Titanic' still has the record. 'Star Wars: The Force Awakens' is still far from the $2.1 billion of 'Titanic' to claim the #2 spot.
