SuperGirl(2015) Pilot- GIRL POWER!!! Literally!!! This 45 minutes pilot introduces us to Kara-El, the cousin of Kal-El who as a 13 year old is send to follow and protect baby Kal-El right after he is launched toward Earth. Of course her Krypton parents didn't foresaw that the planet's explosion would cause that Kara's spacepod was tossed to the Phantom Zone and delayed her arrival to Earth a good 27 years. When she finally arrives it is her adult cousin, Superman, the one that receives her and takes her to her new adopted parents (cool cameo by former Supergirl, Helen Slater & former Superman, Dean Cain). After that move forward to her young adult life as the nerdy assistant to She-Devil Bitch Boss, Ally McBeal, who chews the scenery with gusto. The pilot is surprisingly entertaining, while not masterpiece in anyway, but is colorful, funny, and has neat special effects for a tv show. Sure, some sequences felt dumb as hell, not the ones in the office, but the ones with her sister and the secret military base general, which at worst were cringe-worthy. The rest is good and shits on the old 80's film. But make no mistake, this is a very feminist show, and that is a compliment, not a defect. I mean, this show can easily become what was 'Wonder Woman' tv series in the 70's: a superhero show for girls that guys can watch too if only for the, ahem, obvious reasons (Melissa Benoist is very attractive) and the superfights. The show (and this pirated pilot) will not air until a few months for now, but I foresee it will be a ratings winner, like The Flash. 7.5/10

I thought that 'the Flash' pilot was weaker, but it had the highest ratings ever for its WB channel. This will kick ass as it is a fun show for the entire family, unlike 'Arrow' which is gritty. 3 seasons? maybe...after all, as awful as it was, Wonder Woman lasted only 4 seasons and made a limited actress like Lynda Carter an icon. I am not saying this will happen to this show or it star, but it has potential to be a ratings winner.

 

I have been watching this show and it keeps improving with each new episode. What I like: that this is no freaking 'Smallville' that at first was trying to distance itself from its comicbook roots. Not here. They go straight head-on toward comicbook plots with Supergirl fighting powerful villains that can go mano a mano with her and sometimes she gets beaten (at first, of course) as she is still learning to use her powers. Also is nice that she makes mistakes and doesn't have all the answers in how to deal with the problems she faces. What I DON'T like: the constant reference to 'my cousin (Superman)' like if no one in the audience didn't get that fact from the first episode...and every single episode aired so far! Second, I still cringe that they turned Jimmy Olsen into this six feet tall, mature, bald, black hunk with a baritone voice and high IQ which is a far cry from the comicbook Jimmy Olsen (short, young, freckled face ginger-haired Caucasian photographer who is mostly clueless all the time). Third, making Supergirl as some sort of secret military operative recruit who gets blamed by the Colonel every freaking time she saves the day Still, this is a very entertaining, fun, lightweight popcorn series worth watching.

 

Shut up. You have not even bothered to watch it.
