What kind of damn trainer of the year trains his fighter by phone? lmao....I hope it was at least facetime or Skype!
damn, there seems to be some serious turmoil brewing in Garcia stable's. But to be honest, it's inexcusable that he can't figure a way to train his two top fighters face to face
Trainers are pretty overrated in boxing. On the world class level, it's pretty hard to have much affect on a fighter who's style basically is what it is. Garcia IS a highly overrated trainer, but trainers in general are overrated when it comes to blaming them for a fighters' loss. Ultimately, this loss came down to the difference in ability and NATURAL ring IQ. Yes, some fighters are inherently just more adept at adjusting, and strategically planning in the ring. How the fuck is Robert Garcia suppose to out think Riggo? The guy has more ring smarts than Garcia, and Donaire combined. Both were clueless on how to figure him out, and that would be the case with MOST trainers. And even if you had a trainer that DID know how to expose Riggo, at the end of the day, it's still the FIGHTER that has to go out there and find the openings for himself.
Donaire could've had top cornermen like jay bright and Norman stone and he still loses to rigondeaux. I don't blame Garcia. Donaire is lazy and didn't wanna leave the bay to train in Oxnard. It ain't like he's making 5 mill per fight where Garcia can afford go leave his stable for 2 months
@ Xplosive I agree strictly in terms of strategy the trainer may be overvalued but it seems integral for a trainer to be with the fighter during preparation for a fight. Getting into shape and getting sharp with technique; you always see Roger with Floyd or Roach with Manny or any of his fighters.
Remember trainers who have been "ZOMG best EVA!!" then once their fighter loses, they're chumps? Buddy McGirt et al.
i do think garcia is an over rated trainer. been thinking so for a while now. basically all his guys fight the same way, aside from his little brother, and donaire who he doesnt even really train. and, like it or not, he was in donaires corner and was partly responsible for the lack of adjustments made. same the alvarado fight where he was out maneuvered by rudy hernandez.
Yeah but how often as a possible result of his lack of availability or preparation. Every trainer loses fights, but not every trainer can't make time to personally train with one of the top P4P fighters in the world. And the question of whether it made any difference is kind of irrelevant in my opinion. Regardless, it just seems lazy and complacent.
no doubt I was just referring more to the modern, real-time reactions people tend to have these days to trainers/fighters in general
i don't know, if I'm a top fighter making million dollars paycheck, I expect my trainer to accomodate me, not the other way around ( and I've alway's liked Roberto, even as a fighter )
That's sour grapes from Rios. He got beat fair and square and if he is indeed telling the truth he should have replaced Garcia then and there with someone else as it has been done many times before leading up to big fights and done with success.
