Sure, they were great if you bought into the album based on a masisve mainstream hit single. Actually, that´s being unfair. To me, Nirvana were the driving force behind that grunge movemnt which tbh, was a really good change from what developed in the late 80s, post-Live Aid. Stuff I hear from 1989-91 is fucking horrendous now. The 4-CD version of Nevermind is cool. Since them though, can´t think of too many bands that stand out. Radiohead Coldplay The White Stripes The Strokes Green Day Franz Ferdinand Queens Of The Stone Age Wilco Gorillaz The Killers The Libertines Kings Of Leon Arctic Monkeys Muse
Good list there Mostarda. I'd probably give it to QOTSA, closely followed by The White Stripes. Never really got The Strokes, Arctic Monkeys were good but they declined pretty quickly once Alex Turner thought he was Fonzie.
Wilco is a definite candidate in my opinion. Thought about radiohead but they were pretty much contemporaries of Nirvana, no? It is hard to kmow what qualifies as mainstream anymore. The National is good.
Pablo Honey was what? '93? '94? It was pretty much a grunge record. It did spawn a hit single though so I guess you'd have to see them as contemporaries.
I'll limit it to bands that came out after 2000. I expect no one to agree with me here but I give it to The Script. I really like their sound and they're amazing to their fans. I also like the way they talk about drinking and getting fucked up in about every song. The Killers are good. Kings of Leon is a band that I could probably get into if I listened to their LPs instead of just the radio singles. I also liked Keane's first LP very much. Didn't like the lead single off the next LP and haven't followed them since. And I need to listen to them more but I am impressed with the all female band War Paint. So my top 5 from 2000-now 01. The Script 02. The Killers 03. One Republic 04. Kings of Leon 05. Keane Honorable mention: The Fray, War Paint, Bastille
