Peter Jackson's first chapter in the new Tolien trilogy, The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey set a new December box office record, but it disappointed on its expected numbers. Many insiders were predicting a $100 million opening, but instead it came up with $84.8 million just a little more than $7 million more than the previous December record held by Will Smith's I Am Legend's $77 million. The film got mixed reviews from critics, but audiences are giving it a higher note than critics. It might or might not finish its run close to $300 million, but it definitely will become the lowest grossing Jackson Tolkien film adaptation so far. Worlwide the film has grossed $223 million. Good numbers, but considering the anticipation this film had its kind of not the juggernaut the studio was expecting. Rise of The Guardians is holding well and remained in second place with $7.4 million for a as of this date total of $71.4 million. In the third place and moving a notch up thanks to its seven Golden Globes nominations, Steven Spielberg historical drama Lincoln took home $7.2 million for a total of $107 million. The film will earn even more in the next weeks and will benefit again when the Oscars nominations are announced in January since this one looks like the obligatory frontrunner ahead of Argo. Sliding from #1 to the #4 spot, but with only a mere 35% decrease, James Bond's last mission, Skyfall earned another $7 million for a now total of $272 million domestically. Will it reach the magical $300 million mark? Lets wait and see. Rounding the top five Life of Pi took $5.4 million for a total of $69.5 million. The costly Ang Lee film is still not recouping its investment.

I don't see how it can be a disappointment. That's a hell of a haul for December and I don't think people were really looking forward to this the way they were the Lord Of The Rings films.

    Source material is just weaker.
