The Identity Politics Oscar Nominations

Browsing the list of Oscar nominations I (and many others online) noticed a pattern in the 8 Best Picture nominations and in other categories: is all about Identity Politics...the Oppression Olympics. Remember the 'Oscars so White' two years ago? and the 'No Wamen nominated for..."? Well, all that has been fixed this year.

Making 'history' is the first superhero film, Marvel's Black Panther. Was it Marvel's best movie last year? Nope. The largely ignored by the Academy 'Avengers: Infinity War' was waaaaay much better, but it didn't created the 'cultural phenomenon' about 'the first black superhero film' (ignoring the fact that BLADE & SPAWN were made like 20 years ago). So 'Black Panther' nomination is mainly because of its race factor. Nothing else.

Talking about race, 'BlackKlasman' also got a Best Picture nod. Because now 'in the Trump era' is 'important' to mock racists. Spike Lee had done better films that didn't got nominations, but this one, which got mixed reviews, had to be recognized.

And continue talking about race...are you part of the modern crowd who gets 'offended' by 'Driving Miss Daisy'? Well, now you got the reverse roles film with 'The Green Book' and it HAD to be nominated!

Then there is the Netflix original film 'Roma' (can someone explain to me how a film made for home streaming got nominated?). This Spanish language film about director Alfonzo Cuaron's privileged childhood was so boring my wife fell asleep. I watched the whole thing. Nothing special. But critics loved it. It kind of shows the 'humanity' of what the poor uneducated Hispanic women go through in a third world country like Mexico. OPEN THOSE DARN BORDERS!!!

Lets not forget that 'Bohemian Rhapsody' was embraced by GLAAD, the LBGTQ arm in Hollywood, plus it won the Golden Globe Best Picture (while accused of being a pedophile director Brian Singer wasn't even mentioned). Also getting the LGBTQ GLAAD approval is 'The Favourite' representing lesbians.

While 'A Star is Born' is the most mainstream of all the Best Picture nominees, it stars LGBTQ 'goddess' Lady Gaga whose fans 'The Little Monsters' as she calls them, are mostly gay/lesbians/liberals. So it fits here too.

Last but not least is the box office bomb 'Vice' which again, in the Trump era anything that trashes Conservatives needs to be recognized. Satan grateful actor, Christian Bale is also nominated and might be able to repeat again his thanks to Satan at the Oscars. Ironic for the same guy who once played Jesus.

 

All this means is Oscars will mean even less than they already do.
