Has anyone seen this movie? Just saw it last night and thought it was very very good. Hate to admit it, but Yankee Doodle Meryl Streep did an excellent job as Maggie Thatcher, especially with the makeup as the older version. It's sad if she really has deteriorated that much. The lady they cast as the young Maggie Thatcher/Roberts was very good as well. Obviously there are lots of holes and many things brushed over too quickly in an historical sense but that wasn't the main focus of the movie.

The only Maggie Thatcher film I'd like to see is one where she is executed via Firing Squad

See your reaction to her crimes is confirming my views on why you don't give women too much power.

They don't have the correct psychological makeup to wield power.

Not sure I'd make any generalisations about women from Thatcher. She had about as much feminine energy as a Bull Shark.

Yeah but that's the point. To be a leader of men (and women) as a woman your femininity has to be compromised to a certain extent. The unaddulterrated feminish spirit isn't equipped to lead.

Sure, but there'll always be outliers, variation applies within as much as between the genders. I'll happily stick my neck out that there'll never be a leader of men I'd hustle to nestle my porker in, though.

    Thatcher was a MAN, baby:giggle:

I hate her for three reasons

    1) She is the English answer to Ronald Reagan with EVERY negative connotation associated with that. She just wasn't as good at acting like she was nice the way he was. He was a master con-man.

    2) She killed 10 men in an arrogant attempt to deny 800 years of history

    3) The bitch didn't die in office

For a long, long time I wished that the bitch would die. As fate transpires, her mind is mush and I am told that he is in a daily amount of agonising pain. Now I hope she lives for a long, long time to come.

    Fucking cunt.

now she babbles incoherently: "Pancakes are Pancakes are vacuums. There are no political doilies. There are no political muttonchops." followed by the sound of pooping

I saw this movie and I thought it was crap. Streep did fantastic job, but otherwise the movie didn't explain anything, didn't offer any opinion nor gave the viewer a chance to form an own take.

Half of the movie shows nuts-gone Maggie talking to his dead husband. Perhaps the idea was to demonstrate that she was missing after ordinary family life which she had no time to live, or perhaps the director wanted to show her character, that she wanted to be important and that she had strong will despite being sick. Anyways the film wastes way too much time to these parts.

The history parts on the other hand go forwards way too quickly. At first Maggie can't get to the parliament but just like that she becomes super-popular. The opposition is against everything she does, she says she does everything for the benefit of Great Britain. Before the Falkland War the economy is in ruins, then after the pointless was everything is great etc.

The motives behind Thatcher, according to the movie, is that she has strong principles and she is willing to fight for them. Again, the viewer has zero chance to form an own opinion.

I haven't experienced the era myself, so I don't have a strong opinion of Thatcher. Even so, this movie didn't tell anything new about her

Allow you to educate you further my Finnish friend.

Thatcher was an evil, evil bitch. Evil. Destroyed the lives of millions to make some rich people even richer. Ripped the heart out of communities ('There is no such thing as society'), sent men and women to die for the sake of eighteen sheep on an island a trillion miles away, sent the army into legally striking workers, closed every piece of heavy industry in the North of England and Scotland...these were her best bits.

By doubling the set point real unemployment rate forever more? By condemning millions more to chronic underemployment at the alter of 'flexible labour markets'? Hugely expanding the rentier capitalist class doing fuck-all except 'putting their money to work'? Moving people out of productive labour to sit on their arses eating crisps in bank foyers and telesales call centers since we're in a 'post industrial age', now?

(I realise you're being facetious but I bit anyway. Fuck Thatcher)

As I said, I don't know much of anything about her reign and the 'public opinion' of her over here is pretty divided but I'd say more admirable than bashing. It is good to hear from people who actually were around then (as I said before, the crap movie didn't give any explanation to anything)

Unfortunately, young pups like Hut*Hut (he's not really 26, is he?), weren't around to actually expeirience Britian in the 1970s, so a lot of revisionist history going on here.

There's +'s and -'s for every leader in every country, so singling out Thatcher for whatever decisions/mistakes she made is kind of pot-kettle-black when you consider what transpired when Tone and Gord got in...

Except not because the reason New Labour were so ineffectual (and that her legacy is so poisonous) is that they took on all her core assumptions about how the economy worked. That low inflation was key, that Britain was moving into a 'post industrial' age where finance replaced the need to make anything, that progressive tax would cause a wealth drain against all evidence, that unrestricted capital flows would increase efficiency & investment in the real economy (while continuing to dismantle it), that privitization would create efficient public services, that shareholder value maximization meant good business performance, that housing was an asset market which would make us all richer by alchemy. They were rowing down the river she sent Britain down, just slightly slower.

    No pluses with Thatcher.

T'was an interesting time when she was in charge. Britain was suddenly female dominated: what with her and the Queen.
