how did marquez fight any different saturday than he has his entire career? diaz forced him into that type of fight. as the guy got older he made a concerted effort in fights to be more aggressive and marketable. vs diaz was a poor example of this however.

I suppose there will always be the "toppers" the guys who used to watch the fights in the 1800s exclusively for the sadistic aspect of the sport while being dandy... and then the new variation of fan to whom a Gatti Ward fight means something.

marquez is too smart for that and he has been dropped when trying to pursue too vehemently against Pacquio. I believe his level of aggression is part of a strategy and that is how it should be.

Marquez is past his prime, and was always a notoriously slow starter to begin with. How he fought was as expected.

He slowly figured Diaz out, countered him, broke him down, then took him out.

Once he sliced Diaz open with that beautiful left uppercut, the fight was pretty much over.

Yeah, fighters like Diaz, Pacquiao, even Jandaeng, who come at him, and leave openings, bring more of this out in him.

    It's a DOUBLE EDGED Sword...

If JM Marquez was More "Fan-Friendly" From the OUTSET he WOULDN'T B Where he is Today...The RE w/Manny Pac & the 2 BRILLIANT KO's of Casa & Diaz WOULD have NEVER Happened...

JM DOESN'T have the Greatest Chin (It's Not "BAD" Per Se, but Probably his BIGGEST LIABILITY), so it was IMPERATIVE that he B More Defensive Minded EARLY...Being More "Fan-Friendly" Could've Led to an EARLY KO Loss that Might have Kept JM HIDDEN & BURIED Forever...

Moreso, REED Doesn't Really Think JM is TRYING to B More "Fan-Friendly"...He's SLIPPED a Great Deal, Particularly DEFENSIVELY...But Whereas Most "Boxers" LOSE Relevance 1nce their Reflexes Diminish, Marquez has the POWER to Remain On Top...

All in All, he's a Great, GREAT Fighter...& After Seeing him IN PERSON Last Night, REED Can't Understand WHY it Took him Soooooooooooo Looooooooooooooong to Finally Start APPRECIATING this Cat...

I first saw him against Robbie Peden and that night I became a fan of him. His textbook punching and lethal combinations had me at "hello". He was the most ducked fighter of his own division. Morales and Barrera wanted to part of him. Naseem ducked him too. The Norwood loss set him back, but he slowly began gaining recognition. Beristain might be to blame for bad managerial decisions, but it all worked out at the end. I always thought Rafa would go farther than him, but that might have to be more with him crashing with the Israel vasquez train.

His best performance is when he destroyed Medina.

I became a real fan when I saw his cute tranny Asian boyfriend. No its not what you guys think.. I just kept thinking ok who is going to be the one to say "yu little faggot I ought to punch you in the nose!" :cheer:

I would have but then I remembered my friend Mexican Hebrew wedding skirt and his tales of how a mere 105 pound boxer could take on the legione of doom! so I just passed the torch on to Hanzy... go ahead Hanzy go punch the accountant from Mexico City in the nose... whats the worse that could happen? :mj:

That's when I became a fan too. I remember he beat Peden so bad Peden started puking in his water bucket and the ref stopped the fight.

LOL as if Marquez suddenly started to fight fan freindly. Wake up call.. Marquez is and always has been an awesome, exciting boxer. His "rep" of being a boring fighter, not one that I bought into but somehow certain fightbeat members have, is based almost purely on the Gainer fight in which Gainer RAN like a bitch the whole night before quitting like a bitch. Marquez, Diamante or whatever, has always packed major power and always beat his opponent up bad. I for one am of the opinion that he "should" be undefeated.. and is at the very least a tie for p4p #1.

I disagree that it was the Gainer fight, Smoke's reputation preceded him in that fight, and it was clear he wasn't really trying to fight.

I think the Salido and Polo (and Norwood) fights are more likely to blame...at least for those who actually watched them and formed that opinion of him.
