Boxing has always been considered a sport that has given young men a way out of poverty. Lots of rag to riches stories in boxing. The life of Duran and Manny Pacquio to name a few. But on the flip side of the coin what are some of the saddest stories. Boxers who may have had a good level of success in their boxing caree4 but in their personal life wasted it behind bars, died in a bar fight or a tragic car accident or got involved with drugs ultimately ended in ruins???
Wilfred Benitez His father pushed him into the sport and allegedly gambled away a lot of Wilfred’s earnings. El Radar is in horrible shape due to brain damage.
Augustus story is quite sad. Never made it to the big time in spite of being very talented (both due to politics and his lack of focus). Finished his career as a stepping stone for up and coming prospects and was then hit by a stray bullet while leaving the gym. Not to sure about how well he recovered now but last time I heard was in pretty poor shape and his gf was taking care if him.
I think we shouldn't list anyone who's been injured in the ring as it's way too obvious Another one is David Reid. He's now a broke, social recluse highly self conscious about his dropping eyelids. He basically blame boxing for his hardship and dosen't want anything to do with it. The American Dream came close to being a nightmare for Philly's David Reid
Johnny Bratton’s story is really tragic. After his boxing career was over he ended up penniless and mentally impaired.
Matthew Saad Muhammad also had a really sad ending. He ended up homeless, lived in a shelter, and was diagnosed with ALS.
Saad's Story Had a Sad BEGINNING Too... Born Matthew Loach, an Older Brother Took Him on an Outing One Day and LITERALLY Ran Off and DESERTED Him...If REED Isn't Mistaken, Saad Happened Upon a Convent and a Nun Last Named Franklin (Saad's Pre-Muslim BOXING Surname) Basically Adopted Him... Saad Didn't Fight HARD for Nathan; Life Dealt Him a SHITTY Ass Hand Almost from Jump, Which Manifested Itself in HOW He Fought... REED
That is sad your own family.... One of the saddest stories Ive heard of was Joe Louis. Such a legend and in the end was broke from owing back taxes to the IRS. Irán Barkley- Last I heard worked as a mall cop. Tony Ayala Jr- wasted his life in prison for rape/sexual assualt. two times. Johnny Tapia- od Corrales-motorcycle accident Macho Camacho-murdered
Yusaf Mack. Went from being a good test for the upper comers to an aids test n trying to beat the world record of number of dicks fit in your mouth. Record currently held by neil
Yeah youre right ...i'll never condone a rapist. Bad example. But at the same time I know women lie. I honestly dont believe Mike Tyson raped that girl. Didnt stop being a fan after he went to prison. In Ayala's Case there is a pattern of him being a weirdo so yeah fuck him.
I never understood why Reid a straight man as far as I know was so obsessed about his droopy eye lid.... so strange.
This thread has potential to be longer than the ticket line at bossys comedy debut at the Apollo theater
Lol my ass honestly doesn't even have the energy to mod anymore. Too much going on in life, and other interests are overtaking boxing. At this point, just have it. I've given up
Yeah. I think he caught it from heroin as he was a drug addict. He was the first guy to beat Roberto Duran. Duran visited him on his death bed. De Jesus had gone to prison for killing some teenager (maybe road rage?) in a traffic dispute
Beau Jack headlined a record number of MSG events when it was a huge venue for boxing. He ended up shining shoes again when his career was done. Although you can say at least he was alive, as the ref in the Ike Williams fight seemed intent to making sure Beau died in the ring. Michael Carbajal’s brother is a piece of shit. He most likely murdered his ex-wife, and stole Michael’s earnings from boxing. Brother's Keeper Family Secrets Danny Carbajal, Who Ripped Off His Boxing Champ Brother Michael, Released From Prison Iran Barkley was still living in the projects in the South Bronx a decade ago. I think he was briefly in a shelter. I don’t know about now, his nephew Saquon is making huge money in the NFL, maybe he helps him out.
There were a bunch of red flags that promoters ignored. As a teenager, he raped a girl at a drive in. Sports Illustrated had an article on him when he was a contender and they glossed over it. They were like “oh Tony had some trouble as a teen, he sexually assaulted a girl and they paid her off”. He should have been in prison before. Actually it appears that he was probably just too fucked in the head and probably not redeemable or capable of turning into a decent person (I.e. not a serial rapist). He should have just been taken out back and shot in the head.
Johnny Tapia died from heart failure, he didn’t OD’d. Also, calling a POS scumbag, serial rapist Tony Ayala “sad”. What’s really sad was that they didn’t chop his dick off and shoot him in the head sooner. That guy won’t be missed.
I forgot an obvious one, Billy Collins Randy Turpin was suffering from depression, financial troubles, and probably CTE. He tried to kill his daughter and then killed himself. Sonny Liston’s life story is pretty sad. Corrie Sanders got murdered in a robbery in South Africa. Jimmy Bivins was broke and a victim of awful elder abuse late in his life.
Ofcourse Arturo Gatti had a tragic death. It is still unclear how he died was it suicide or was he murdered? The fact that it happened in a third world country where the cops are as crooked as the criminals probably we will never know. Vernom Forrest- Shot in a mugging gone wrong. Trevor Berbick-murdered by a relative.
No I totally agree same with Baldomir who is in a Argentinian prison for ráping a little girl. I think Im rewatching Canelo Vs Baldomir
I think you mean Trevor Berbick was murdered by a relative. His nephew killed him with a machete. Berbick was a scumbag rapist too. Marvis Frazier is still alive as far as I know. Arturo Gatti’s death is still debated by people. One thing that really annoyed me is when people said he couldn’t have committed suicide because he had endless heart in the ring. Like, how does that even compute? How does his in-the-ring action show how he will react to everyday life, substance abuse (and probable CTE)? Refusing to quit in a brutal boxing match brings you CLOSER to death, not farther from it. I don’t know much about purses, but are purse straps really made to support an 180 lb human? A follow up investigation didn’t rule out homicide, but it was funded by Gatti’s friend and manager.
I always found it ironic that BOTH Davey Moore's died in freak accidents. And both Davey Moore's were really friendly guys.
I didnt know Berbick was a rapist. Seems like some boxers love taking that pussy by force. Tyson, Ayala, Baldomir, and now Berbick . Damn
