Four cities bid to host world amateur boxing academy

LAUSANNE, Switzerland: Four cities are on the shortlist to host the first world boxing academy, the sport's governing body announced Monday.

The candidates are Becancour, Canada; Sanya, China; Almaty, Kazakhstan; and Podolsk, Russia.

The academy will train the best young amateur boxers, plus coaches, referees and judges from the 195 national federations that make up the International Boxing Association, or AIBA.

Ching-Kuo Wu from Taiwan was elected AIBA president in 2006 on a mandate to modernize and clean up the sport.

"The academy is one of his ideas for reform," AIBA spokesman Richard Baker said. "Boxers, coaches and officials will go there to learn the vision of the new AIBA."

Around 750 fighters aged from 17 to 34 will be trained each year and educated in fitness, nutrition and anti-doping classes.

"We want to take more responsibility for the athletes and help look after them when they have finished boxing," Baker said.

"We hope to use the first academy as an example and set up another one on each of the continents."

The academy would have an annual budget of more than US$5 million (€3.2 million) and be managed by the AIBA and the host country's Olympic committee.

The winning city will be chosen by the AIBA executive at a meeting during the Beijing Olympics in August.

The FCT Administration says it has earmarked a strategic plot of land to build the Samuel Peters Boxing Academy in Abuja to help groom the younger generation of Nigerian boxers. The FCT Minister, Dr. Aliyu Modibbo Umar, gave this hint last Friday in his office while receiving the heavy weight boxing champion, Mr. Samuel Okon Peters, who paid him a courtesy call.

The minister also said Abuja is ready to host the heavyweight boxing championship slated for October 12, 2008 at the National Stadium.

According to him, "Abuja is ready to host the heavy weight boxing championship whose hosting rights has been given to Nigeria because we have all it takes to play host to the world fiesta."

"We will quickly re-configure the major facilities to be used for the World Boxing Championship to meet all the international standards because the world's attention will be on the Federal Capital Territory, Abuja, for that period of time", he added. While expressing the gratitude of the FCT residents to the world champion for being a good ambassador of Nigeria and for bringing the championship to Africa for the second time since its inception, particularly Abuja; the Minister urged him to use his goodwill to give the proposed Samuel Peters Boxing Academy an international touch.

He challenged the World Boxing Organizations to always give free relay rights to African Broadcasting Organisations, to beam such fights to all strata of the society because of the poverty level of the continent since majority do not have access to satellite televisions.

Dr. Umar expressed delight that the Championship has been scheduled for Abuja because international tourists and investors will have the opportunity to see the potentials of Abuja. Speaking earlier, the world heavy weight boxing champion, Mr. Samuel Peters, thanked the FCT Minister for the rosy reception accorded him and his entourage.

He stated that the World Boxing Championship is the biggest in the game of boxing but promised to work harder to defend and retain the belt for a very long time.

Mr. Peters remarked that the World Boxing Champion has membership of 140 countries with a lot of its politics.

Communist countries have always been known for their sports academies, and some real talent comes out of their ranks.
