I think we all agree that tito wins if the fight is at 154, since it was probably Tito best weight, and Canelo was still a work in progress at that weight. But if Tito face the canelo of the second ggg fight, does he wins?

If it’s pre-Hopkins version of Trinidad, I think he wins. Canelo is touted as this defensive wiz, but he’s very hittable in there, and he doesn’t have Hopkins mobility or physical strength inside. An old Cotto at 160 pounds won a few rounds against Canelo and went the distance, so I can’t see Canelo stopping Tito.

I can’t really see a way that Canelo wins unless it’s the 2004-2005 version of Trinidad.

    I agree with PR.

I'd take the Joppy version of Tito to win.

Canelo to me has peaked at 168, and not 154-160.

I'll take Canelo by close decision. Trinidad relied way too much on his power at the higher weights and telegraphed his punches a lot more. Alvarez has the skill to avoid most of Tito's shots and the chin to handle it when one gets through.

Canelo stops any Tito above 154.

I don’t see Canelo as a big hitter. Every true elite level guy that he fought went the distance with him.

Winning a close decision (with some dodgy scorecards) I can see, but I’d have to see more to be convinced that he’s stopping Trinidad.

You're underselling the middleweight Trinidad. Either that, or overrating Canelo. It took a peak Hopkins like 1,000 flush shots to stop Trinidad. Mind you, Hopkins had endless stamina, and Ginger doesn't.

The man couldn't stop Chavez Junior and Danny Jacobs. Never seriously hurt Jacobs, much less stop him. He ain't stopping Trinidad.

That's what the Joppy fight says.

Hindsight is cool and all, but there was none of this talk until Hopkins battered him.

Yeah, a complete technical and physical dismantling will do that.

Canelo on fight night since the first Golovkin fight has weighed more then 180lbs in every fight to my knowledge.

Tito wasn't very impressive stopping Joppy IMO. Nowhere near as impressive as he was below 160, and he was nowhere near as impressive as the GGG Canelo fought. Just because he beat a guy like Joppy doesn't mean Tito was anything special at MW. What's more, Canelo's clearly got enough power to hurt people and get their respect. I'm not too bothered by failing to stop Chavez. Nobody's KOed him despite him facing some good punchers, both of his stoppage losses are quitjobs. Tie this in with Tito's less than stellar jaw and Canelo's weight advantage, and I think it's pretty obvious who wins. Tito is being overrated based on being the older fighter IMO.

Not stopping Chavez Jr I think can be overlooked to a point, but failing to stop Cotto at 160 is telling. An older and undersized Cotto at that.

Trinidad definitely wasn’t at his absolute best at 160, but I do feel that it takes a decent puncher to stop him. The three men who did beat him were all naturally (emphasis on naturally) bigger men who could not just outbox him but muscle him around. They also had considerable height and reach to go along with their skill. Canelo is not as mobile as any of those guys IMO. Certainly not as defensively good either.

Maybe I’m underrating Canelo, but I’m not convinced he’s as good as he’s being made out to be.

Didn't he fight Cotto at 155? While drained? I think given Canelo's abysmal workrate at that weight, it's not too bad of a black mark either.

Canelo isn't a huge puncher, just a big enough one to stop Tito. Weighing 20lbs more than him with incredibly accurate shots is what's gonna do it.

I have no horse in this race really, but objectively I think Canelo wins fairly comfortably at 160.

Yeah, and he also bounced cherifi all over the canvas. I just don't see how you can say his power wasn't there at 160. He barely landed anything significant wgainst hopkins

Double picked Tito to KO Hopkins in 2001. Apparently at the time he didn't think Tito's power wasn't there.

I think id also lean toward tito. Canelo is not necessarily an easy target to find, but he has to enter the danger zone to land his punches. And tito punched hard enough at mw to hurt him. He also had better stamina than Alvarez. I think he gets a decision or a late ko

If Canelo's second fight at middleweight was against a peak Hopkins instead of an old Golov, his legacy would be quite different too, and his career would have been cut short.

I still don’t think Canelo beat Golovkin. And he lost to Lara at 154 or was it 155? Lol

The original post is Trinidad vs Canelo that fought GGG the second time.

He was "comfortable" enough (to weight cheat and roid) against a guy who had the knockout record at middleweight. He was then even more comfortable having a rematch. If Trinidad's boxing abilities get underrated at times it's because of his fights that actually happened at middleweight. It's not some trope that gets thrown around to people who haven't seen him fight. Those performances came against some elite fighters but it doesn't change the fact he looked pretty inept and his power didn't help him one bit. So Canelo who went 24 rounds with Golovkin is going to fold facing Trinidad's punches?

Tito aint outboxig him and isn't overpowering him so how is he winning exactly?

He caught Hopkins a few times but Hopkins great chin and ability to roll with punches was a major factor. Plus his natural size advantage. He started his career at 175. The size difference was apparent.

Canelo has the shorter arms here. Are his punches gonna always reach target first? If he fights Trinidad like he did Golovkin in their second fight, I think that strategy could back fire in a major way.

    Never saw the Lara fight.

I can't see how he got a draw in the first one. It's not like it was the worst robbery in the history of boxing but that was GGG all the way. Not really happy about the verdict in the second one but for me it's not something to argue much about. That's the one which could have been a draw.

I honestly don't see how he couldn't overpower him. As i said, his power wasnt necessarily ineffective against bhop and wright, it was his inability to land anything that was the issue. the fact that bhop fought his most defensive fight up to this point, showed that he respected tito power.

Iirc, it was canelo that asked for the catchweight. I don't think he drained himself to make 155.

Edit: just checked. It was cotto. Canelo wanted 156

what's weird is, reid used a similar defense as wright against tito. but tito was able to break through it.....it became clear as a rule you can't stand in front of tito and just put the ear muffs on, as atlas calls it. but in wright's case, he had no problem.

I think Tito could in fact over power Canelo and do some serious damage to him in exchanges. And I don’t see Canelo as being on the same level as Hopkins. He’s not even as good a boxer as prime Oscar.

I think Tito had lost a lot of his great timing and reflexes by the time he fought Winky.
