AGREED! Eubank's chin was virtually on Hagler's level (look at the flush shots he took from Benn) and his power is very underrated. He'd survive a Tommy Hearns onslaught, get slighty outboxed and then catch up with his man in about the 9th round.
Hearns by clear decision. Too skilled and too quick. Eubank is one step behind all night...he lasts the distance but is considerably behind on the scorecards.
I agree. Eubank was a counterpuncher, and had an erratic workrate. He had power so you'd have to give him a punchers chance, but thats it. He sure as hell couldnt outbox Tommy, and after tasting Hearns' right hand, he'd be hurt and scared to press. He didnt have the mentality to attack like Hagler.
He'd have to jump on Hearns early to win. Once he lets Tommy establish that jab and get comfortable, it'd be too late. Plus Eubank had shitty stamina, he faded badly late and arguably lost to Watson, and Watson wasnt in the same universe as Hearns.
True. I'm just saying it's not a given that Hearns wins it simply by "boxing". Eubank was cagey and could hit hard. The point i'm trying to make is that Chris could pull out fights when behind. He wouldn't just go into a shell if being jabbed from the outside. Let's also not forget Hearns' stamina was exactly stuff of legends either.
Good post but.... Eubank had HEART, HEART, HEART and then more HEART. Do not underestimate this man's...HEART! All that you say is very true and very possible, and on paper, Tommy should win...but the intangibles favour Eubank in this one and he'll get Hearns eventually. Eubank punched very hard himself and had a much better chin than Hearns. Did I mention his HEART?
Did I mention he went life and death with Watson? And was it you who said his chin was almost as good as Hagler's? Not the hell it wasnt. It was very good, but he was hurtable, Hagler was damn near impossible to hurt. Benn hit extremely hard, but Eubank never faced anyone who hit as FAST as Hearns with the power. Tommy could very well put Eubank on his ass. I really dont see Eubank being in the same class as Hearns. His ENTIRE reputation and career was built on the first Benn fight. I dont think THAT much of him. Chris avoided Nunn, McCallum, Toney, and RJ like they were the plague. I will say however if Eubank was in his prime today, I'd probably pick him over sucky ass Taylor.
I didn't see a whole lot of Eubank, but from what I saw of him he was stationary and tailor made for a banger like Hearns, but then again I thought Iran Barkley was as well before their first fight. If Eubank could survive the inevitable early onslaught to the head and body from Hearns, Tommy would have been in trouble with his weak chin. I will go with Hearns by KO.
