At 147 , not so sure here ... DLH isn't so short , has a granite chin , plus could crack good at 147 ... Interesting fight , would be great if it could have come true ... No-one to this day has ever dominated DLH ... The closest to that was the Hopkins fight .... I favor Hearns but Hearns could get stupid at times ...
Tommy was a good boxer.. DLH does best againest guys that come at him.. Plus DLH really is a one handed fighter.Tommy would hit him with the right and put him to sleep!
I think Hearns wins a clear decision by outjabbing DLH, and keeping him tenative with the right hand. DLH said he was tenative against Quartey because of his power..Quartey's right hand isn't as powerful, fast, or accurate as Tommy's, which is simply one of the best right crosses in boxing history. Tommy might mix in some nice left hooks to the body as well (an underrated weapon of his). DLH has a good parrying defense and solid skillset, but as most fighters do, they'll sacrifice offense if they concentrate on defense (and vice versa).
Hearns wins a decisive decision. Oscar was a fantastic fighter at 147lb, but not on Hearns level. Other than his chin (which he'd certainly need in this one) he doesn't have a single advantage over the Hitman. Hearns 10-5. I could even see Tommy stopping him between the 11th and 13th.
Oscar has a chance at 147, but I'd still favor Tommy at that weight. At 154 Oscar would have NO chance, and would likely be stopped.
De La Hoya could hold his own, but his only chance of actually winning would be to land a perfectly excuted left hook. Barring that Hearns wins by at least 8 rounds to 4.
Wow. Nice thread. DLH would be literally running around the ring! His stamina problems would get him as usual, but this time with disatrous results! He'd start running late in the first and probably gas by the middle of round 5 and be beat down in the same round. Joel De La Hoya throws in the towel from first row ringside at the end of the 5th.
I actually suprised that you guys have DLH doing as well as you do dont get me wrong.. DLH is a great fighter.. I just think Style wise he is basically a one handed fighter and he wouldnt be able to do shit to Tommy and even though DLH has a great chin.. Tommy's right hand is ridiculous.. I think DLH gets stopped in 8 or so
Agreed. A straight-right hand lands faster than a left-hook. Even though De la Hoya's chin is better at 147 than Hearns, and they have comparible jabs....Hearns' right-hand was something freakish.
I can translate his drunkeness "u sat that like it's trief and true, it's not" Translation = "You said that like it's tried and True, it's not" Still does not make much sense::
You say this but DLH was never dominated by anyone. His only clear cut loss (as in not a close fight) was to Hopkins at 160 ...
I agree..but I also think no one DLH fought was as good as a prime Tommy I think Style wise Tommy would give him trouble and Tommy's right hand was awesome
Hearns via wide UD... After tasting the power, I think Oscar goes into survival mode much like he did in the latter rounds against Trinidad and does more running than punching. He'll get hurt a couple of times, but since he'll be so terrified of Hearns' power, he'll never sell out enough to find out if he can get KO'd by him. Hearns via 9 rounds to 3 margin or maybe 8 rounds to 4.
Oscar ran because he pretty much swept the first 9 rounds. No way he runs if he's behind, lets give the guy some credit. He'd go out on his shield.
No.. Because it was clear that the punch that hit him wasn't a clean punch. Hopkins' fist is not even turned into the shot. I'm not stupid. Ricardo Mayorga got hit with a REAL bodyshot the following week of that fight. There's no comparison. De La Hoya took a dive. He quit because he knew was gonna get punished bad, and its as simple as that.
He stayed away from Tito in the late rounds because he was tired. If Quartey's right hand made DLH tenative, surely Tommy's could have.
Oscar's chin, boxing ability, and his own left-hook, could hang with Tommy. IMO it's a pick 'em fight. opcorn:
Hearns UD 12/15 or mid rounds KO. Tommy was a great welter. Oscar less than. Oscar was also used to being the bigger and quicker fighter in the ring @ 147. With Hearns, he loses those advantage, as well as the chance to control range with the jab.
Well, the Quartey fight was just an extremely close, tentative fight full stop - that was the nature of it. Every time somebody overreached or overcommited they were punished and could expect to lose rounds on the back of single mistakes. It was just that kind of style match up, it was hardly Quartey's devastating power that made DLH tentative. Of course Oscar would fight cautiously against Hearns, but my point is if he was getting outboxed doing that no way would he acquiesce to defeat out of a physical fear of Tommy's power and go into survival mode. We're talking about an outstanding champion here not some C class guy who fluked his way to number 1 contendership. He would adjust and try to win.
De La Hoya said in the post-fight interview that he was a little nervous due to Quartey's power and that made him throw less. I agree with the rest.
