Chavez has never beaten a great fighter, so how does he rank far above guys Sal Sanchez, Barrera, Morales and some others. He beat a lot of very good fighters, but never in his life has he beaten a great fighter. He tried once and Pernell took him to school. If you slap another 50 bums on the records of Barrera, Morales, Sanchez and some others they look just as good. Chavez certainly doesn´t rank far and above all other Mexicans.

he dominated a tremendous (but not great) fighter in edwin rosario. as much as i like pernell, the fight was at 145 and chavez was clearly past his peak.

he also showed greatness in his come from behind KO over taylor despite the controversial stoppage.

i'd rate chavez at #1, sanchez #2, miguel canto #3 and rest would consist of guys like chiquita gonzalez, morales, barrera, olivares, and finito.

The best fighters Chavez beat were Taylor and Rosario, and neither of them were all time greats.

Morales and Barrera's resumés are better than Chavez's.

Sanchez died on August 12th of 1982, so from August 7th to August 12th of 1982, he was still an active fighter. :flip:

Zaragoza and R. Marquez are probably up there as well.

Admittedly, I'm not too familiar with Lopez's opposition, so I'm not too sure about his ranking.

If I think more about it, my list will probably change. That's an "off the head" guess, for now.

ugh, chiquita had a much better resume than marquez. it's arguable that his resume might have been better than barrera or morales'.

He called me a Tomato can, a blatant insult in general discussion - that's not appropriate.

So I simply retaliated by pointing out that an aussie has no right to call anyone a tomato can, or any other insult.

I honestly think so. I don't hate the guy, and I love Mexican fighters in general, just look at my username

When I say overrated let's clarify that.

Is he deserving of all time great status? Sure. Is he clearly Mexico's best ever fighter? I don't think so. I don't think he is clearly above Morales and Barrera as a fighter, or as a resumé. And I certainly don't think he is on Duran's level as some people do.

I think Sal was a better more talented fighter than Chavez, Lopez too.

I actually agree with this post now that you're being more specific.

Chavez is definitely better than either Morales and Barrera, but obviously is NOT on Duran's level, I totally agree...and as you said, I also think Sanchez was the most talented of them all.

The only disagrement I have with you is on Lopez, never been a big fan of Lopez, the dude was very tall for his weight class yet never had the balls to move up to the true flyweight division, I just don't consider this strawweight crap as an authentic division unless you are a fan of Tom Thumb or Tattoo.

arent u an avid tito fan? what great fighter has he beaten? i dont think you have to beat a great fighter in order to be great. you can beat a bunch of very good fighters to be considered great.

morales and barrera have each other on their resume.

The thread topic is "Top 10 Mexican fighters P4P, last 25 years".

I will leave Sal Sanchez completely out because he SHOULD be left out of this topic. technically he was still active 25 years ago,...but , well you know.

    1. JC Chavez- Won titles in 3 weight divisions, and even though he fought alot of non title fights against nondescript challengers,....the man dominated the sport at his weight class . Never ducked anyone.

    2. Ricardo Lopez- yeah, he didn't have the big names on his resume because of his weight class......and he was content to stay at his weight class. But he dominated unlike any champion of ANY weight class. If he were welterweight, he would be talked about like a GOD.

    3. Marco Antonio Barerra- does anyone disagree?

    4. Humberto Gonzalez- Was just so much damn better than anyone else within his range that it wasn't even funny. PROVED that the first loss to a verrrrry good Michael Carbajal was just an aberration.

    5. Erik Morales- Great fighter with tons of heart and courage,...but with his height, reach, range, versatility, power and chin, ..would have been much higher on this list if he had taken a safer route. But, he always laid it on the line and never gave way to making fights easier than they could have been. Great for boxing and fans,...but bad for him to an extint.

    6. Rafael Marquez- What can be said about this guy to extinguish the belief that he is at least the sixth best Mexican fighter since 1982?

    7. Jose Luis Castillo- i know that he just got blowed out by a, IMO, overrated fighter in Hatton. But up until then, Castillo had given Floyd Mayweather his best test ever, was tough as nails, relentless and domitating. Plus, he gave us one of the best fights of all times.

    8. JM Marquez- great technician, textbook style, sometimes seems disinterested. But when he is on top of his game, he is as good as they come.

    9. Jose Luis Lopez- Tremendous waste of talent. Shame.

    10. Yory Boy Campas- I know i will get alot of flack for this one, but let me explain.

As we all know, the higher the weight class, the less Mexican-rich a division is.
Most all of the Mexican greats have come at 135 and below.
Campas fought in one of the most competitve divisions in boxing during his career.. He is still active and has a quite impressive record of 89-10 with 72 KOs. most all of those losses have come since Campas has been past his prime.
And even though it has been YEARS since Campas was considered in his prime......he is still a dangerous test for anyone from 147-160.

oh, come on now. it's a 'black thing' to hate on margarito. i dont think that's racist at all. just more of an obvious stereotype.

now, if i called you a name of some sort that degrades your race, then that's a different story. i was actually surprised that you were even offended by it.
