Dunno about this one yet, but here's one go at it. #20. Danny Zaragoza #19. Ricardo Lopez #18. Juan Francisco Estrada #17. Canelo Alverez #16. Jose Medel #15. Gilberto Roman #14. Marco Antonio Barrera #13. Carlos Zarate #12. Baby Arizmendi #11. Rodolfo Casanova #10. Rafael Herrera #09. Lupe Pintor #08. Juan Manuel Marquez #07. Erik Morales #06. Chucho Castillo #05. Salvador Sanchez #04. Vicente Saldivar #03. Miguel Canto #02. Julio Cesar Chavez #01. Ruben Olivares
Top of my head Ruben Olivares JMM Sal Sanchez MAB Yaqui Lopez (he'd win a title today and Canelo woukdnt want any bit of him) JC Chavez Humberto Gonzalez Pipino Cuevas Canelo (lucky) Erik Morales
I did it a few months ago. But I'm too lazy to bump it. I think my current list would be: 1. Chavez 2. Sanchez 3. Olivares 4. Saldivar 5. Zarate 6. Canto 7. Marquez 8. Barrera 9. Morales 10. I can be critical of him, but I think I'd place Lopez at 10. HM: Castillo, Pintor, Herrera, Cuevas, Roman, Canelo.
1. Julio Cesar Chavez 2. Ruben Olivares 3. Vicente Saldivar 4. Salvador Sanchez 5. Miguel Canto 6. Carlos Zarate 7. Juan Manuel Marquez 8. Marco Antonio Barrera 9. Erik Morales 10. Rafael Herrera
Without doubt. It's probably daft to put him in a Top 10 at the expense of Saldivar or Zarate but he's the best ever from Mexico over 168lb and I don't think Canelo would want ANY fucking part of the guy. 15 round tank, tough as hell. I don't see Canelo do a fucking thing with an animal like MSM. This isn't Callum Smith or Vodkabreath Kovalev.
This is my feeling.........he's the best legit 175lbr ever from Mexico and since his time.... off the top of my head- and they may not even be all "Mexicans"- only Andy Ruiz, Chris Arreola are beating him and in Arreolas case he's just too big. Manuel Ramos might bomb him out, again too big and powerful. Here's a guy who DID beat Yaqui Lopez- but not THE Yaqui Lopez. He;'s got a win over Ezzard Charles but by 1958 Ezzard was pretty wore out. https://boxrec.com/en/proboxer/10376 Alfredo Zuany
I think Julio Cesar Gonzalez is the number two Mexican LHW. Yaqui was a very good fighter, but I wouldn't bet on him vs Canelo, and nor would I have him close to a top ten. Whether or not you agree with the order of my top 20, I think it's fair to say I got the right names in there. The ones I considered who didn't make it were Jose Luis Castillo/Ramirez and Pipino Cuevas. I think it's definitely fair to say they need to be in it before Yaqui. Are you people using eye test as part of your criteria? Because I can't see Zarate being so high without it.
Don't know about Zarate's eyes, never heard of it until now. For a country that has produced so many great boxers, to be the number 1 LH from your country is a great accolade, for me. To apply the Bernard Hopkins test, how many "Slick black fighters" were the others fighting? Cuevas didn't look so clever once he had to get down and dirty with them. Nor did JC Chavez Sr who had a very mixed bag of results.
I feel like it isn't a significant feat if you're opposition is someone who's claim to fame is two controversial decisions, a war with a Julian Letterlough and being on the sore end of what was considered one of the most farcical mismatches ever. Does Leslie Stewart rate highly because he's the best LHW from Trinidad and Tobago? I can only think of one slick fighter that Yaqui beat, and he also lost to him. Jesse Burnett.
He's in a league of his own at 175. A league of his own. There's literally no other 175lbr from Mexico that I'd fancy over him. And this isn't Thailand we are talking about. It's Mexico.
Let's face it, the chap had become a bit of a drunk towards the end. Not taking anything away from Canelo, he did well to come down from 180 to beat the guy at 175
