Laporte was one of his best wins, but im gonna keep it to peak Gomez performances. 1. Obviously Zarate. 2. Yum 3. Lopez I 4. Davila 5. Meza
I've always thought Gomez was a little bit more magical in the Yum and Lopez fights than he was vs Zarate. Obviously has loads to do with the opponent, but just as a spectacle, watching him get away with some of the things he did was amazing. Absolutely unbelievable in the way he seperated himself from the your average world level fighter. What really impressed me vs Zarate, was his versatility and authoritativeness. He just didn't give Zarate any qaurter, and beat him in any fashion. I think I like the Homes fight in my top five. A horrid beating, where Wilfredo really shows how spiteful and malevolent he was. He drew out a beating just because he could. #05. Derrik Holmes #04. Dong Kyun Yum #03. Alberto Davila #02. Carlos Zarate #01. Juan Antonio Lopez I
Absolutely not. Pintor's a pretty horrible performance considering how many facets to his game Gomez had. He wasn't half as defensively responsible as he normally was, nor was he anywhere near as light on his feet. He just barged in there all guns blazing and tried to KO Pintor.
Another reason why I had Lopez higher than Zarate, is that Gomez's bodywork in the Lopez fight is much more prominent than the Zarate fight.
I also love the Kobayashi fight. Countered the shit out of him, worked the body with an awesome left uppercut; and brutally KOed him with a left hook.
That's quite a statement. Not saying it's not true but there's a heck of a lot of talent to choose from.
What really set Gomez apart from another phenom, like say, Olivares, is that Gomez was incredibly determined, which is something that isn't stated a lot. Gomez was a bully, and typically, bullies are front runners... but that wasn't Gomez. He had as much heart and fight as anyone in history. Olivares, despite having comparable talent, didn't have as much determination and heart as Gomez, and that's a point Sweet Pea once made on here. It's the talent and skill PLUS the intangibles that made Gomez special. That's why Rigo would have zero chance whatsoever against Gomez. Bazooka would rip that fuckin quitting Cuban's heart right out of his body.
Ya. I love Lupe and can't stand Bazooka, but prime for prime Gomez blasts him out. People forget Gomez was naturally bigger.
I think the key distinction between Olivares and Gomez isn't just determination - Olivares showed his heart just as much, arguably more, than Gomez did - but as well as never saying die, Gomez was an incredibly malicious and spiteful character who would never settle for less than a brutal knockout. He had the heart of a lion and the meanness of Iron Mike.
