[h=1]UFC champ Jones facing possible nerve damage to bicep following close-call armbar[/h] by Steven Marrocco and Matt Erickson on Sep 23, 2012 at 3:20 am ET
[IMG]TORONTO – The armbar that popped Jon Jones' elbow did damage that undoubtedly will sideline the champ for the near future.

Jones (17-1 MMA, 11-1 UFC), who fought through the hold to cinch a submission over Vitor Belfort (21-10 MMA, 10-6 UFC) in the fourth round of UFC 152's main event, said doctors believe he may have nerve damage to his right bicep.

Jones was bound for a local hospital following the post-event news conference to get an X-ray on the injury.

UFC 152 took place Saturday at Air Canada Centre in Toronto. The event's main card, including the light heavyweight title fight, aired on pay-per-view following prelims on FX and Facebook.

News of another injury to a top UFC star was not music to UFC President Dana White's ears.

"Another fighter injured," he quipped. "That's crazy."

White, however, gushed at Jones' performance.

"There's no doubt that this was his best performance," he said. "He looked phenomenal tonight.

"There was a lot of questions about Jon Jones that people kept asking over and over again, no matter who he fought. No matter how good he fought. Could he take a punch? He got hit with some big punches tonight from a real puncher, and he took them. He was injured. He had the heart to keep going, and he had a great fight tonight. There can be no more naysaying about Jon Jones. You love him or you hate him … but you can't deny that the kid is extremely talented and one of the best in the world."

Almost half of the press conference had passed when Jones stepped onto the podium sporting a sling. Immediately after the fight, he admitted the submission hold was solid and said he heard his arm pop when Belfort applied it early in the first round – though he vowed not to tap. Speaking before reporters, however, he said he had mentally prepared himself to lose.

"In there, I felt as if there was a point where I don't think physically he could have extended it even more," Jones said. "I mean, it was popping, and I felt after 25 years that I've never felt that feeling before. I just came to terms with what was going to happen, just thinking, 'Man, I can't believe I'm getting ready to lose this way.'

"I remember the first time I punched with it. I just felt like it had no power on it. I was like, 'That felt funny.'"

Belfort, a former light heavyweight champ who stepped up from middleweight to 205 pounds for the title fight, surprised both Jones and the crowd with the submission attempt, which was fully extended before the champ freed himself.

"I had my opportunity," he said. "I think when I heard (Jones' arm) pop, I kind of lost the pressure, and he got away. It is what it is. I thought I really had that arm, but he fought through it. He did great."

Although White previously indicated that a fight between Dan Henderson and Lyoto Machida may serve as a runoff for Jones' next opponent, he declined to speculate on the immediate title picture.

That image will clear as the damage to Jones' elbow is thoroughly assessed.

Given the BACKLASH he's Received for the Last Month or So, THE LAST Thing Jon Jones Could've Wanted was to Find Himself in a COMPROMISING Position During his Fight...Not Only Did this Happen, but it Occured EARLY!!!...Nonetheless, Jones POWERED his Way Out of it, LIFTING Belfort Off the Canvas w/the Hold APPLIED, & Went On to 1nce Again Win in Dominating Fashion...

Belfort had that Arm Bar Locked in TIGHT...You Could See that BULGE just Under Jones' Bicep...To Put it MILDLY, Jones was Legitimately TESTED, Mentally AND Physically & he PASSED...

Jones' HONESTY, as he Describes Being Caught Up, SHITS on the Notion that he's "Fake" or a "Phony"...Dude is Anything BUT...

It's crazy to think that Vitor Belfort came the closest to beating Jones and NOT with power punching but with a freaking armbar attempt off his back.

The truth is that Jon Jones, unlike anyone else in MMA, is significantly better than the next best guy at his weight. Silva had the tough fight with Sonnen. GSP lost to Serra and looked mediocre against Shields. Meanwhile Jon Jones has spent the last two years absolutely destroying all the top fighters at the weight.

And I will say that Jones handled all the fall out from his DUI and choice not to fight Sonnen with maturity, and he has gained respect for that. And no matter how you feel about him, it can't be denied that he is the best fighter in the sport. He has become an MMA rockstar. To me his fights, and the way he systematically, and brutally dismantles his opponents, is the most entertaining part of the sport right now.

The way he used his rangy side kicks to Belfort's front thigh/knee to reduce one of the biggest punchers in the sport to pulling guard, was brilliant. And his constant and menacing pressure can't be over stated. He simply breaks fighters, great fighters, with his forward attack.

The scary thing is that it seems Jones is only starting to scratch the surface of how good his overall striking CAN be.

As of Now, Jones' "Striking" Consists Primarily of KICKS & LEAD Elbows...There's Definitely Room for Improvement in Regards to Jones' Usage of his HANDs, but he Has the Potential, as the Well Placed Bodyshot that Ended the Shogun Rua Fight, Illustrated...

Its funny, even with the arbar, i wasnt even worried. I knew Vito had it in deep, but for some reason i didnt think Jones was going to tap and i just knew he was going to weather the storm and whup that ass.

I disagree about him handling the sonnen thing with maturity. But other than that, i have no issues with the Champ.

I don't think Jones was really in trouble when Vitor had the armbar. I'm pretty sure the '' he may have injured his arm fighting it '' is nothing more than p.r. stuff to make him look better.

    Nah...

Even REED's Watched Enough MMA to KNOW when an Armbar is CINCHED In Pretty Good...You Can Visibly See a BULGE in that Part of the Arm, just Below the Bicep (Not Sure what that Portion of the Body is Called), when an Arm is Close to Being BROKEN...Jones' Arm was BULGING...

WTF? There was no hype or publicity BS about that armbar. Vitor had that shit locked in. I've watched thousands of fights. That was the real deal. I'm shocked by Anthony, he knows BJJ.

And Jones isn't a good enough actor to fake the way he was holding his arm after the fight.

Some people just can't give credit where it is due. On top of being possibly the best fighter in the sport, Jon Jones doesn't seem like he has an ounce of bitch in him. There are a ton of dudes that would have tapped when their elbow hyperextended. I don't think Jones would have tapped even if broke.

you may be right, I'll have to watch it in better quality to know for sure. BUt to me, his arm seemed fine and he alway's had his other hand on it to diminish the pressure. I never had the feeling he was close to tapping or having his arm broken

Good on Jones for not tapping out. That shit was tight so good to see he's got heart. Vitor gave a great showing considering he's a middleweight and was at such a disadvantage. He has nothing to be ashamed of. He came the closest to beating Jones out of anyone else Jones has faced.

What I love about the Jones situation is that he can lose his next fight in brutal fashion and NOBODY could say he got "exposed". Now the whole MMA world have no excuse for having doubts about him.

It's Jones' own fault his arm is fucked. The guy did the opposite of what he should have done. You don't stand up and try to pull the arm out, that is not how you escape an armbar. He needs to work on his sub defense. You're supposed push into the guy, drop your weight towards the arm that's being armbarred not try to pull it straight out. He's lucky his arm isn't broken.

At my old Gym, i use to see guys try and stand up and think they can pull the arm out just on strength alone. It's a rookie mistake. They think because they are stronger and bigger, it's no big deal. Big Mistake. But jones wasnt going to tape no matter what. He realized what he did was wrong, adjusted and proceeded to whup that ass.

He was certainly at a disadvantage but Vitor Belfort is a career ligh heavy. I think he's had 2 or 3 fights at 185 in his life.

What's really funny is that he got a shot at both the UFC Middleweight and Light Heavy titles without winning a single fight at those weights in the UFC prior to the title shots.

The dude wins a 195 pound catch-weight fight with Franklin and gets a shot at Silva. Then he beats Anthony Johnson at a 197 pound catch-weight and gets a shot at Jon Jones in his very next fight.

Vitor Belfor has always been the #1 guy at the top of my overrated list in MMA. His career is basically defined by a win over a very young Wanderlai Silva and a cuts win over Couture. Oh, and he's a drug cheat as well.

I have already heard how people are saying Jones is exposed now, his sub defense is his weakness. What's funny is he subbed a BJJ black belt in Machida, I wonder if the dragon is sitting at home thinking "man if I could have just landed a flying armbar before he choked me out" lol

    Jones CAN'T Win w/Some People...

w/Out LOSING the 1st Round vs Machida or Getting Caught in an Armbar by Belfort, those SAME Guys would Say, "Jones is just a FRONTRUNNER that's Never Been TESTED"....Yet when he's Actually Tested a Bit, it's a Sign of 'Weakness'...

I dont even think he lost the first round against machida. That is a case of someone doing slightly better than most so they give him the round. But IMO Jones won it.

Jones really does have any glaring weaknesses. That's not even arguable. The guy has a few places that he could tighten up a bit, but he's as well rounded as it gets to be honest. You don't beat a who's who list of fighters dominantly like he did last year and this year with glaring holes in your game. Fact is every top fight er at 205 has tried to find that hole in his armor and exploit it and hasn't done it yet. I think that says a lot. That being said, I still say he can't beat JDS at heavyweight so Jones should stay at LHW and dominate for a few years.

JDS looks like he's one dimensional because that one dimension has been more than enough to kick everyone's asses. We're not talking split decisions here we're taking either 3 round beat downs or destructive knockouts. JDS has great boxing, great chin, great tdd. Keep in mind the reason his tdd defense is as good as he is because he keeps it simple. If was doing spinning back fists and flying knees and kicks he would probably get taken down a lot by now. There is no one in division that will pose any kind of problems for JDS. If Jones moves up and settles in comfortably at say 245 pounds I could see it being a big challenge for both guys but till then JDS is #1 and no one is touching him.

I'm, personally hoping for Cain to beat him in the rematch. I think the first fight was kind of a fluke. I don't see it going that way again. Cain might get KO'd but it's going to last much longer the second time.
