The city of Houston will host USA Boxing's Olympic trials in August at the George R. Brown Convention Center.

Eighty-eight boxers in 11 weight classes will compete in the Aug. 20-26 event, with winners advancing to the world boxing championships this year in Chicago.

The Chicago event is the first opportunity for boxers to qualify for the 2008 Olympic Games at Beijing.

Officials with USA Boxing, the Harris County-Houston Sports Authority and the Greater Houston Convention and Visitors Bureau will announce plans Monday for the event.

Eight Texas boxers have qualified for the event, including Hylon Williams, 16, a student at Madison High School who is the national Golden Gloves featherweight champion. Williams, who trains at the Savannah Boxing Club, will be seeded third at 125 pounds at the trials. Juan Leija of Alvin is seeded sixth at 112 pounds.

Houston, which in 1999 hosted the world amateur boxing championships, and Miami were finalists to host the USA Boxing event.
