[h=1]USA TODAY: Frankie Edgar replaces Erik Koch, meets champ Jose Aldo at UFC 153[/h] by John Morgan on Aug 31, 2012 at 12:00 am ET
[IMG](This story appeared in Friday's edition of USA TODAY.)

Despite a pair of disappointing losses to current UFC lightweight champion Benson Henderson, former titleholder Frankie Edgar (14-3-1 MMA, 9-3-1 UFC) will now get his shot at history.

USA TODAY Sports and MMAjunkie.com (www.mmajunkie.com) have learned that an undisclosed injury has forced Erik Koch (13-1, 2-0) to withdraw from a planned UFC 153 title fight with current featherweight champion Jose Aldo (21-1, 3-0), and Edgar has agreed to step into the evening's main event.

Edgar now looks to join UFC Hall of Famer Randy Couture and Hawaiian superstar B.J. Penn as the only men to hold UFC championships in two different weight classes.

Now dubbed "UFC 153: Aldo vs. Edgar," the event takes place Oct. 13 at HSBC Arena in Rio de Janeiro. The evening's five-fight main card airs on pay-per-view.

On the heels of this weekend's canceled UFC 151 event, UFC President Dana White admitted he was disappointed to learn of Koch's injury. However, one call to Edgar quickly resulted in a turn for the better.

"Obviously, we've had a rough couple of weeks here at the UFC, and then sure enough, I walk in to work today, and Erik Koch is hurt," White said. "But Frankie Edgar, being the stud and the warrior that he is, steps up and accepts this fight."

The 5-foot-6 Edgar has long been questioned about a potential move to 145 pounds, but with a pair of wins over Penn and two now-legendary bouts with massive lightweight Gray Maynard, "The Answer" ruled the promotion's lightweight division for nearly two years. However, after Edgar's pair of razor-thin losses to Henderson, White urged the New Jersey native to consider a move to the featherweight division.

Now that Edgar is making the move, White said he can't wait to see this new championship matchup.

"I'm pumped," White said. "I think that people are going to be very excited for this fight.

"Frankie has had a tough go the last couple of times with the judges, but a lot of people think he belongs at 145 pounds. Well, here we go – Jose Aldo vs. Frankie Edgar. People have been wanting to see this fight for a long time."

Meanwhile, Aldo enters UFC 153 with a 14-fight win streak. Since ruling World Extreme Cagefighting's 145-pound division and moving over to the fellow Zuffa-owned UFC as the promotion's first-ever featherweight champion, the Brazilian phenom has scored successful title defenses over Chad Mendes, Kenny Florian and Mark Hominick. Overall, Aldo is a remarkable 11-0 under the Zuffa banner.

A timetable for Koch's return wasn't immediately established.

I just saw this on Sherdog. WOW, that is a good good fight. If anyone can stop Edgar, it's Jose. I can't see Jose losing the fight.

If you can't see Aldo losing, then why is it such a good fight to you? It's just a gimme for Aldo

I'm picking Edgar, but it's a compelling fight, could go either way. Aldo is a beast, but he became a bit overhyped at one point. I fancy Edgar to be a bit too well rounded and good at wrestling, and win a decision.

Wow, this might be the best injury to ever happen to the UFC. Now they have an interesting title fight. No one cared about Aldo-Koch.

Frankie obviously has a good chance in this one, but he better be able to check or avoid low kicks better than he did in the Henderson fights. Aldo's kicks are a different animal all together. Frankie won't be walking around by round 3 if Aldo lands that many to his thigh.

    Can't wait for this fight.

    Sort of Silva/Sonnen light.

Similarly, I would not expect Edgar to be able to control Aldo for 5 rounds, but it wouldn't be a miracle, either.

Great fight. I thought Edgar clearly won the first Henderson fight and have yet to see the rematch although hearing that it was even a better performance by Edgar than in the first fight I gotta think I'll have him winning once again. I really felt bad for him when I read about the decision because he's such a overachiever with a huge heart that you can't help but love the little scrapper. Hopefully he somehow beats Aldo and then challenge the lightweight champion once again. It would be awesome to see a reigning featherweight champion challenge the reigning lightweight champ.

Man I love this fight. Frankie and Aldo at 145. It doesn't get much better than that. Trp and I talked long ago that Frankie should be at 145 regardless. I see this fight staying standing. Very techincal chess match. Might not be a crowd pleaser, but for nerds like us, it will be fucking awesome. I am right with Trp, Frankie needs to have a plan for those leg kicks. I think Frankie really needs to have crisp boxing, very straight and stiff 1's and 2's right down the pipe.

Mark my words, Frankie will be shooting for the TD as soon as he feels the first couple leg kicks. He may infact win the fight with TD's and top control.

The rematch was the worst robbery in MMA that I can think of.

It's such a great tactical battle. Will Aldo throw low kicks knowing Edgar has great wrestling? If Aldo trust his take down defense and let's the kicks fly how does Edgar deal with it. Can Frankie use his speed to baffle and frustrate Aldo?

    Great fight.

This fight screams Koch got paid off to step-aside for Frankie. Not too many people thought Koch deserved a shot anyway and with the UFC 151 debacle, I think Dana is trying to make up for it quickly and give the fans something to remember. This is going to be a TOUGH fight for Aldo, and a very exciting fight for the fans. Very hard to pick against Frankie, even if it is against one of the most talented champs to hold the belt right now. If Aldo's in shape and doesn't have stamina issues like he did against Hominick, he may pull it out. I think Frankie stands a very good chance to win this fight unless Aldo can hurt him and finish him. Frankie can be hurt and usually does get stung at least once in every fight, but he recovers like nobody else and his heart and will to win makes him dangerous for anyone. I think an upset is entirely possible here, but I wouldn't pick against either of these guys so I'll stay on the fence here.

No F'ing way Frankie won the first fight against Ben, but yes, the second was VERY close, razor close. I think a draw was certainly plausible and I wouldn't have had any complaints if Frankie won either. I think both guys were just that close that a decision in either direction was justifiable.

I think you are the only guy I have ever seen say the first fight wasn't close. On top of that, I don't know many people that didn't think Frankie won the second fight clearly. But hey, opinions are like assholes, right?

The first fight was close, but Edgar won. I can see arguing that Henderson won, but I don't agree.

As for the second fight, if you think Henderson won, you are either an Edgar hater, a Henderson nuthugger, or a complete retard. Second fight wasn't even close.

I head there's a lot of chance that Aldo pulls out because of the injuries he suffered in his moto accident

That would suck. Maybe Edgar can fight Sonnen.

You don't follow MMA forums then because there are plenty of people that felt Ben won the first fight and the second was razor close, but hey you have an opinion too, even if plenty of others don't agree with it as well.

Sadly, a lot of fans really need to learn that scoring MMA isn't the same as boxing. You may be one of them.

Aldo already stated he didn't suffer any injuries that would prevent him from fighting. Where are you getting this information?

I thougth Henderson edged out the first fight and the second one really could have gone either way. Since Edgar was gifted a win over BJ and Maynard, I don't feel bad for him what so ever. That and I was sick of seeing him fight rematch after rematch.

LOL.. Edgar's only win over Maynard was one of the most brutal stoppages in MMA history. How is that a gift? He beat the dog piss out of Maynard.

I had Penn winning the first Edgar fight. I had a draw with Maynard in their second fight. And I had Edgar winning the first Bendo fight narrowly and the second fight 4 rounds to 1.

I am a perfect combat judge. So don't question me.

MMA scoring, boxing scoring, international olympic gymastic scoring, no matter what system you use, the second fight wasn't close. Edgar CLEARLY won.
