Ortiz is currently ranked in the top 10 of three of the four sanctioing bodies at 140 (WBA 5, IBF 10, WBO 8) despite still being brought along very slowly. He faces Jeffrey Resto on Saturday, who I belive was Larry Merchant's former pick from the Olympic litter in the "stacked" junior welterweight class of '00. I know he mentioned being pretty high on him during the clips they aired on one HBO telecast year's ago (I think it was during the Too Sharp-Montiel broadcast). I haven't seen Resto fight in a while. Anybody have any thoughts on this fight?
i remember larry merchant calling resto the best prospect in boxing. this was AFTER bojado and cotto had already turned pro. in his very next fight or so he got his ass handed to him before qutting against the columbian cyclops. :: i wish i had seen his fights vs. that dude from maryland (clark is his last name). i heard both were awesome fights.
Michael Warrick, actually. You can download the second one, which is still probably the most brutal fight I've ever seen live. I'm not positive, but I think there's a video out there of their first fight too. Great guy, but today, he's a very shot fighter.
I thought Resto looked alright in his last two Telefutura fights, at least better than the final scores in each fight. That said, I don't give him much of a chance this weekend, though I suppose that's stating the obvious. Eric Gomez is a terrible matchmaker, but I'm fairly certain Golden Boy knows what they're getting in this matchup.

Ortiz is decent but nothing great IMO. Juan Ma Lopez is going to be a p4p fighter real soon. He beats everybody at 122 IMO.
I'm a big fan of Ortiz. I think a future all action fight is him vs. bradley. He's still got some work to do, but I like what I've seen thus far.
That would be a good fight. I like him though I'm not sure about Ortiz's prospects overall, but if he's matched smartly he should be pretty successful and look good doing it.
I like Lopez but beating Ponce deLeon is far from beating Marquez, Vazquez, or even that tall gimp Caballero. I agree though he is awesome and has alot of potential to be a pfp fighter.

No, I wasn't there. It was on ESPN. Nice knockout. My favorite part about the Resto fight was sitting there with Luis Collazo comparing scorecards. After the fight was over, a group of drunken polish guys got into a brawl right behind us. I never felt safer in my life, because Collazo was clearing my way out of the arena!
You have the wrong Roy lover :: But if JuanMa is who you're thinking of and you can't wait to see him, you'll have to wait until.... Saturday, when he fights on this very card (v. Sergio Medina).

What I like about him is that he has the KO power and skills to dominate. IMO it is a rare gift to have power in the jockey divisions. Even Juan Marquez who Ihave all the respect for in the world and is one of my favorites... Its hard to watch that weight class for me if the guy can't really dominate with power.
Even Izzy, Raffy and Caballero? I'm not so sure about either of those fights, although Izzy and Raffy are getting long in the tooth. I could see Caballero though with his freakish height give Juan Ma a real handful.
His Royness and royjonesp4pno1 are two different posters (at least as far as I know). Your "bald gerry dome" reference would be more to His Royness. RJJprpno1 could very well be a baldy as well, but I've never seen a pic of him and honestly wouldn't know if he were sitting right next to me. Onto JuanMa... I like him, but IMO he's still a work in progress. I got his fight w/ Ponce DeLeon very, very wrong. I didn't expect a 1st round KO and figured he'd take less chances against any puncher, so that was an eye-opener (even taking into account it was PDL). In addition to the way he fights, I like the fact that he's not afraid to name names and doesn't hide behind his promoter. I hadn't previously been very impressed, always noting the skill but his fights leaving me w/ mixed results prior to '08. But I now believe he sees the potential around him, and wants to rule the world. That, mixed with his boxer-puncher style you reference, can go a very long way in an already loaded division.
dsimon writes: Yeah good point. Look at Deleone... he has gotten by purely on power BTW. The man with a punch could rule an empire, or in this case, a loaded division. Puerto Rico has a tendency to train its fighters well... The basics, the fundamentals, etc... Sort of like the Cubans.
I've been impressed with JuanMa a grand total of ONE time. For a guy whos best win has came over a guy fans butcher constantly for having no skills, I find it odd that he's the new flavour of the month.

You see him take punches roll with them to get a straighter stronger shot in...he did that to ponce and in a couple of other fights. His speed and timing are tremendous. he caught that Mexican veteran totally off the cuff. I see greatness in his instinct and power. And in the lower divisions if one can somehow become a puncher and not another boxer puncher they can go far quick imo. Its the only reason Ponce could do anything! Take away his power and ponce is a total wash yet he held a belt fr the simple reason he could punch with some authority. If this kid stays low where his power is and keeps going they will be comparing him to Floyd and not Cotto in a few years.
