Just heard this on a disreputable UK based sports-radio show.

    Supposedly made for October 16th.

I guess Americans have fond memories of how Shannon did it for the USA when he defeated the evil Communist Sergei Lyakhovic, after Sergei had defeated Brother Brewster, who was the original Euro Slayer.

Geez man, must everything have some sort of base, vulgar socio-political undercurrent? Can't it just be a pish match up? And it's interesting that Vitali fighting an old bum somehow reflects badly on the USA once you're done reading into all it's subtexts.

    Pish match up.

Johnson, Sanders, williams, Peter, Gomez, Arreola, Johnson, Sosnowski, Briggs. Vitali must have the weakest competition of any long time world champion, any weight ever, ever, ever, ever. Ever.

I am merely referencing Shannon Briggs pre-fight comments when he fought Lyakhovich, and the warm sentiments with which both his comments, and subsequent victory, were received.

That said Boxing Monthly did castigate him for his foolishness.

Yes, Vitali only fights Bums. I wish he could have fought studs like what Joe Louis did.

    Full article and video.

Give Vitali credit for this much: he stays active.

Haye won't make the fight. He can't fight Wlad. Povetkin just pulled out of a title shot and Valuev is scared.

It's a shit fight but Floyd ain't up to jack shit and Amir Khan want's to fight guys like Paulie and Marquez.

Outside of Super 6, I don't see the rest of the best taking off their vest.

    that's all this is: a stay-busy fight.

briggs doesn't deserve a title shot but he has a name and a hairdo and a 265 pound body to offer up as a sacrificial lamb. not that it matters, but i did like how in the older days this would have been just a 10 round non title affair

Yeah, that's the Maxboxing Spirit.........they took time out from announcing the latest midget fest down in Juarez to tell us all how Vitali vs Sanders would have been lucky to make it on to the undercard at some Blue Horizon event back in the day.

That said I agree with your sentiments in the first sentence. With Valuev and Haye not interested, Povetkin ruling himself out, via Teddy Atlas, Ibragimov retired, Wlad a no-go, Adamek fighting Grant......and with Johnson, Peter and Arreola all recent victims....who is there left? Audley Harrison, who is coming off a big KO win, is penciled in fight Haye, and Ruiz also recently retired.

    Nonfuckingsense.

    34-1-1, 39-2, 32-3, 30-1, 44-1 (really 45-1), 27-0, 22-0-1, 45-2-1

Only Williams and Sosnowski were questionable and they aren't so bad.

Not only is Vitali's competition decent, it's probably the best record-wise, and it's probably top-half pretty easily for reigns of this length or longer.

Briggs has, God Bless Him, carried out the usual ceremonial process of "Boring Klitschkos, Let's Get Rid of Them"

According to Bernd Boente, Wladimir had sold 15,000 tickets in Frankfurt BEFORE the fight with Sam Peter had been agreed.

The bottom line is that it is WORLD Heavyweight Championship boxing.

Crap fight, I would probably take a look at vitali-valuev but briggs has nothing to offer. Too bad Povetkin and Haye have lost their nuts.

i don't really understand your first comment. no matter how you slice it Shannon Briggs doesn't deserve a title shot at the heavyweight championship. i am not slamming vitali or his comp, just saying that one thing i liked backed in the day was that stay-busy fights were usually non-title 10 round matches.

I think Teddy Atlas has Povetkin's best interests at heart. I mean, 20 fights, fights in which he has looked, on occasions, very raw and rash, are hardly the best preparation.

As for Haye..well........we all know his modus operandi.

Valuev then was the next best.......but he wants far too much money, and considering his career is over once Vitali is done with him, then.....I can see his point, sort of.

Vitali vs Solis is a good one, but Solis is not up for it either.

    Vitaly tko7

Briggs throws a couple shots in the first but they either don't land or don't phase Vitaly. Other than that briggs will cover up and throw a punch or two a round while getting peppered from all angles. Around round 7 he will quit on his stool. Will call Vitaly great in the post fight interview and blame the loss on some personal issues while throughout maintaining not to make excuses

Fast forward a week and a half and a report on fightnews.com will come up where Briggs claims the meal he just had prior to the fight was tempered with, vitaly's gloves were dipped in the blinding souse and the KGB came to his hotel room the night prior to the fight and informed mr.Briggs that if he doesn't throw the fight the cold war is back on.

Povetkin is 29, he fought for the eliminator 2 yrs ago, based on his recent appearances i would question whether he could even repeat that performance against eddie chambers. He is what he is, a smallish accurate pressure fighter. However you slice it, both he and Haye are playing the waiting game, hoping that Vitali starts to look really old really soon, before either of them starts to grow a pair.

I didn't want to say that, I figured people would laugh at it or call me paranoid.

Haye's problem with the waiting game is that he is as prone to losing as he is winning.

I think Povetkin is just that: a small, accurate plodder with enough experience to stay out of trouble.

For all the complaints about the division, it would be a far worse place without the Klitschko's.

Yet another crap opponent for Vitali as the heavyweight division remains uninteresting.

I think Briggs is a crap opponent but who else is there right now?

Everyone else is already either signed up to fight, is chicken, or both.

In the meantime, the biggest fight of them all, Pac vs PFB, won't happen anytime soon, Margacheato is getting a payday and people like Khan and Bradley are engaging in Tweet Wars.

Anyone who thinks that this shit starts and ends at 200+ is :Lok:

Peter McNeely, Buster Mathis, Bruce Selson & Brian Neilson were a combined 154-5 when Mike fought them. Bums. Vitali's competition makes Roy Jones' 175 fare look like Ezzard Charles'.

Seems to always be the case though. For whatever reason, Wlad gets the better opponent near ever time. Maybe guys are just more eager to fight him because they figure he's fragile, but Vitali had best make an effort to chase down somebody decent soon whether it's a Haye, a Valuev, an Adamek, Povetkin even an Ibragimov because it's starting to look bad.

Vitali is the Champion. The contenders are supposed to clamour for a fight with him. Not vice versa.

    Shannon Briggs is sooooooooooooooooooooooooooo 90s!

    I can't believe he's still fighting.

Vitali vs Shannon Briggs is like Usain Bolt racing Linford Christie

Like what Irish has alluded to, you can't really fault Vitali for this fight. There really is nobody else out there for him to fight. At this rate the Klits could stay dominant for another ten years because they really are not getting any wear and tear during their current reigns.

Now rank those guys against Vitali's competition. I was going to do it, but this is your claim so back it up.

I'll get you started. Imo, Gomez is clearly the best of the bunch and McNeely is clearly the worst.

But rank Vitali's competition to Lennox Lewis' competition.

Briggs will throw punches for the first round and a half...he'll run out of gas...look terrible then quit or get KO'd by the 7th or 8th....he'll spend the rest of his life demanding a rematch...blaming his poor showing on his asthma.
