WBSS Final: Groves vs Smith

Smith was my pick for the winner of this tournament beforehand, but he has been lacklustre whereas Groves has impressed

 

I expect Groves to win. The guy has only lost to Froch and Badou Jack, and Smith isn't on the level of either of those guys.

 

Smith is fairly decent and has a good dig but is too straight-up and predictable. Groves should have too much craft and movement for him, provided the shoulder holds up.

 

Smith has started well and landed a couple of nice rights. Close so far

 

Heard Groves just got hurt?

 

He did, but recovered well and fought his way out of trouble. Four rounds gone

 

How do you have it so far? Looking online, some have it even, some have Smith 3-1 up, can't find anyone who has Groves ahead. Sounds like he's getting tagged quite a bit with that right hand.

 

After six I'd say 3-3 or 4-2 Smith but four out of six have been very close rounds. Groves doing some good body work which might pay off

Groves started the round well, but ran into Smith's left hook and Callum finished him in style

I picked Groves, but can't say the result is shocking. Groves never had a stellar chin.

Probably, but Smith fought extremely well here too. He might control the division for several years

 

IF and it is a big IF Smith has a chin, he could reign for ages.

He made Groves look TINY in there and Groves is NOT a small 168lbr.

People rag on Groves jaw but only Froch did him like that and even then that was a perfect shot.

Smith is a big big 168lbr........I would fucking love to see him vs Clenelo.

Not so fast. It's not like Groves is the best guy in the division.

You got David Benavidez and Uzcat who have something to say about Smith controlling the division.

 

Of course he is far from proving it.

I have just always seen plenty of potential in him and now for the first time in two years he was able to put it all together and show what he's got

 

Its definitely impressive.

Hopefully it's up on YouTube later, I wanna see it.

 

Callum should avenge his brother and call out Munguia. Why not? Munguia comes into the ring heavier than Callum.

 

I said here about six months ago that Smith would end up winning this and would do for Groves and so it proved. I had him a couple of points up in a fairly cagey affair before a fine shot started the end. A very good win.

I said a while back that I think Smith is the best 168lber in the world right now and I stand by it. This was his 'coming of age' performance - the step-up he needed to start proving what I think he has about him.

DIdn't seem like much of a punch. Groves chin is really horrible. And he also quit like a dog. Very dissapointing from him

 

The full fight is indeed on YouTube and I just watched it. Good performance by Smith. Controlled the entire fight I thought.

I don't think I'd favor him over Uzcat though. He's too straight up, and Uzcat just seems a lot more dynamic. As for Benavidez? Well, he SEEMS to have promise... but now we know he's a cokehead... so he might not live up to expectations.

Either way, the best supermiddle is definitely between the three of them.

Caleb Plant found a way to get out of the ass whuppin Uzcat was gonna give him.

 

Uzcat looked like such crap against the very average Matt Korobov that I have a hard time as seeing him as an elite fighter. Guess he has improved since then, but still

I forgot about Zurdo Ramirez. Arum will continue to protect him and keep him away from the top supermiddles.
