I've been reading predictions from MMA fighters and trainers on the Weidman-Silva fight. It seems the majority favor Weidman.

But what do they know? They've never sat behind a keyboard and made predictions on a boxing forum. Bunch of non-typist.

So let's hear what the real experts think.

It's all white Americans picking Weidman. The same sort of people who picked Chael.

We already had a topic on it if I remember correctly.

IMO, Silva time is up, it doesn't seem he wants to be a fighter anymore. Weidman may not be spectacular, but he's a damn good wrestler and that's gonna be enough vs that version of Silva

Silva's training and preparation is as fantastic as it always has been and he looks in excellent shape.

Not sure where the narrative of him being washed up and not having his heart in fighting is even coming from other than saying it for the sake of it.

i don't pay much attention to what fighters say in terms of picking fights. aren't most of the guys picking weidman americans, not brazilians? i'm sure if you were to ask nog brothers, machida and several other brazilian fighters, they'd pick silva in a heart beat.

What makes you think that? I don't get that impression at all.

Unless Silva gets old overnight he blows this loud mouthed kid out. Weidman barely got by Maia in an extremely close contested boring striking match. He takes out Munoz with a cool elbow and people think he's some next big thing? Get out of here. He might take Silva down a couple of times but I think he will try his stand up a little too long and get knocked the fuck out in 2.

This is basically how I feel. Weidman has the potential to be great and probably even defeat Silva. But I think it's too soon.

In all honesty, Weidman really hasn't faced much high caliber competition. Munoz was a nice win but the Maia win wasnt that impessive. And Maia has shown that he really belonged at 170.

I would like to have seen him fight someone like Bisping, Belfort or Okami before getting the shot at Silva. In fact, I think Costa Philippou is a more deserving contender.

Weidman was supposed to fight Tim Boestch last December but got hurt and Philippou filled-in and crushed Boestch. That win, in my opinio, is more impressive than anything on Weidman's resume. Even tough I think Weidman is a better style match-up for Silva than Philippou, Costa should have gotten the shot.

Yeah, I got a little to caught up in Weidman's hype after the elbow against Munoz.

And truthfully I think Silva's Achilles heal is great wrestlers. But when you really look at it, Weidman is inexperienced and completely untested.

Lastly, this will be Weidman's first fight in a year and also his first since dislocating his shoulder and having surgery.

My mind has changed. This is a tall order for Weidman.

I agree with that, and to be honest find it very surprising so many people are picking Weidman.

How can people so readily pick someone as untested as Weidman against someone quite so experienced and good as Silva, who has defeated a huge stream of different fighters?

aside from sonnen, okami probably had the best size and takedowns at middleweight and he couldn't do squat vs. silva. plus, the way sonnen explodes w/ his double leg sets him apart from any other wrestlers at 185. how many fights does weidman have? he's kinda like cain velasquez except this isn't the heavyweight division. considering the long layoff, i would've predicted a mediocre performance from weidman even if he were to fight some b calibre guy. i think silva fucks him up badly.

It seems to me that recently, he alway's complaining about his opponents not being well known or not deserving a title shot yet has no problem fighting a scrub like Bonnar (yeah, I know it was short notice). Dont get me wrong, Silva is the goat and he could very well blow Weidmann out, but at his age, especially considering he's a reflex guy, and with his current mindset, I see him losing

    Roger Gracie on Weidman

"I think [Weidman] is very, very dangerous. His grappling is at a very high level. He can submit any world-class grappler. I think he’s really that good. He can tap anyone, even me. It’s just a matter of if he can put Anderson in those situations. I would still put my money on Anderson but I think Chris Weidman is dangerous and can surprise him."

Strong words comming from one of the best BJJ black belts in the world.
This type of praise comming from a guy with the credentials as Roger should speak volumes of where Weidmans ground game is.
This Weidman-Anderson fight will be interesting once it hits the ground.

i transitioned to MMA a while ago from boxing due to the lack of quality fighters in boxing and all the belt holders

anyhow....Silva for me is as complete a fighter as your gonna find....the only way he loses is if he finally looks his age and gets outwrestled with some ground and pound mixed in

its def. possible but i'm banking on silva looking as good as ever...stops him in 2 rounds in an fun fight

Compared to the abundance of quality fighters in mma where one win often leads to a title shot?

I think Silva will keep this on the feet and fight in that boring, safe style (Demian Maia) that had Dana threatening to kick him out of the UFC.

Everyone fights each other in MMA unlike boxing. Also those guys that get title shots based on 1 win probably from suffering a loss beforehand usually have beaten someone very good and already have a track record of winning and beating other good fighters

It's interesting and surprising how quiet this forum has been lately, in general, and specifically with this card coming up.

Really fucking quiet. And as it happens, at the same time the boxing forum has been busier than it has for a while.

Nah it's just summertime. MMA audience is really young. And most young people are out.
