Interesting to see how Shane changed his style, or was forced to do so. IMO he's had a great career, but would've been more impressive if he had moved down to 140lbs and reigned in that weight class for awhile.
dsimon writes: Good point. and... I would have to also say that Shakespeare's understanding of "Youth being wasted on the young" applies here as well. I maintain that the Shane that suddenly realized that boxing is not a process of trying to be quicker than the other guy and have heart is a better Shane. Nonwithstanding that this Shane made his first entrance to the ring at the ripe young age of 37. I disagree with those who want to say that a younger version of Shane would do this and that. Shane has never been better than the careful ministrations of Naseem guarenteed he would be against Margarito. Like Bernard Hopkins Shane has a bright future ahead of him, as a fresh faced rookie of almost 40.... provided he lives good (staying way from the Kim Chee and beer) and takes care of his gifts... He simply has to fight in a division where he can make weight easy, won't get physically overwhelmed, keep listening to Naseem and not fight as often as Jin had him fighting these last couple of years.
posr scriptum: Cotto by comparison had better start putting on some weight to make weight and to bulk up enough to look like he belongs (physically speaking) in the same ring as a big welter like Marg of Williams. Cotto is killing his body imo. Otherwise Cotto will not have Shane's longevity.
The circa 2000 Mosley woulda beaten Anphonio even worse. Phony could put brass knuckles in his gloves, and it still wouldnt mean shit. Shane was too fast on the trigger back then for anybody currently at 147 to handle, and that INCLUDES Floyd.
Did Halpern take two points away from Mosley in the 2nd round? Shane certainly fought a dirty fight against Wise even though he didn't have to. Finished him with a head butt.
I don't think so. I think Shane sits on his punches better, he doesn't have the same activity, but his single shots are more telling, better placed...and he's stronger these days. Circa 2000 Shane had problems with Wilfredo Rivera. As a fighter, the past version would probably beat today's version. But as far as matching up with Margarito, I like today's version.
