What is a "Fight Freak" card? Richard Schaefer explains: http://sports.espn.go.com/sports/boxing/news/story?id=6109137 The card: Erik Morales-Marcos Maidana Robert Guerrero-Michael Katsidis Winky Wright-Matthew Macklin James Kirkland-TBA So apparently it involves taking a boxer who hasn't won a meaningful fight in 6 years (unless you unofficially scored the Diaz fight for him) and putting him in the main event, and taking another boxer who hasn't won a fight in 5 years and putting him on the undercard....and then also finding room on the bill for TBA. No matter how the pay per view card goes, though, you will, be able to get your money's worth on the non-televised portion:
This card will at least have action. Kirkland, Morales, Maidana and Katsidis will make it entertaining.
I don't find Kirkland that entertaining. He's a decent watch when he's blowing out opponents, I guess, but the Vera fight wasn't very entertaining. He looked alright against Julio, but Rafael's "Love Child" really isn't a great test and didn't make Kirkland pay for many mistakes. What Morales shows up with will determine how good a fight card it is...I'd love to be wrong and Morales makes a great fight out of it, though the less great the fight is the better it would probably be for him. I'd also love for him not to take a pounding.
So who are the non-fightfreaks that G staisfying? Is it the droves of mainstream fans who were floored by the action of PBF/Mosley? Or is he talking about the PBF/JMM - you know, the fight the main-stream demanded but that pissed off us fight-freaks? What are we? Some splinter from the real target market? The one he can fool into buying crap?
Rafael calls the dedicated readers that wash his backside each week "freaks". I assume Neil was talking about Schaefer using the phrase to categorize this fight card, but I'm just guessing.
i cant think of a more boring match style wise. freakish indeed. a pillow fisted braggart jabbing a midget for 10 or 12 rounds.
Supposedly prospect Danny Garcia is on the undercard against the corpse of Nate Campbell...who had a pretty short retirement, even for boxing. I'm not all that high on Garcia, but he should win this one.
Yeah, not that I was considering putting money towards this card, but Malignaggi-Cotto would make me less likely to do it. This is a BAD card masquerading as a pay per view.
Obviously nobody's perfect, but Kirkland's defense is less perfect than some other's. Matched right, he can make for some entertaining fights, but he's not a guy I'd pay to watch fight TBA's and set-ups.
Ive never seen Ishida fight but according to boxrec he lost to nadar hamdan, an australian bum. unless he has improved a whole lot since then, which is possible, it is a joke of a fight.
Regarding the one-hour free preview showcase fights mentioned by Schaefer... http://sports.espn.go.com/sports/boxing/news/story?id=6109137 these are the names on that portion of the card...

Chakhiev has looked great so far, but so did Alekseev at that stage of his career. He´s too small to be a heavyweight and we all know how famous you can become at cruiserweight.
I don't know that he's too small to be a heavyweight. He might be too small to beat a Klitschko. And I agree that I've liked what I've seen from him.
Gary Russell Jr., Rakhim Chakhiev and Danny Garcia-Nate Campbell will be on the free preview according to Dan Rafael. http://sports.espn.go.com/sports/boxing/columns/story?columnist=rafael_dan&id=6279779
