What makes a "Tony"?

I am so pissed at Antonio Margarito. The more I've thought about it over the last few weeks, the angrier I've become. In fact, at this point I think I am actually not just pissed at the man himself... he's not important enough to be pissed at. He's really just a little, cowardly man. No, the loathing I have is for what I will call a "Tony" in the broadest sense.. kind of like Americans have come to call all traitors "Benedict Arnold" because of the association with perhaps the most infamous American traitor.

"Tonies" are not just run-of-the-mill cheaters. For example, a "Tony" is not a pitcher who puts vaseline on the ball, wins a few extra games, and maybe gets caught and suspended. Or a swimmer who is caught blood-doping during trials and is banned. Petty people, yes, but not as despicable as a pure "Tony". No, a "Tony" is someone whose cheating led to events far greater than and far more important than himself ending up DIFFERENT because of the cheating.

Perhaps the most well-known examples of "Tonies" throughout history are found in Mark McGuire or Barry Bonds - usurping sacred baseball records by pure steroid overloading. Records they NEVER would have otherwise broken. Their damage is far greater than what is the apparent effect - a great season, good stats, all-star game, maybe a playoff berth. That's bad enough. But if you take a step back, you see the long-term damage, that they have forever sabotaged the sport of baseball, and have stolen the credit and the chance for other TRULY great players to show how great they are/were without steroids. The damage has been done and can't ever be undone.

Maybe lesser example might be athletes like Ben Johnson, wherein other athletes were cheated of their medals, but later this was rectified to some extent by the Olympic organizers stripping him of his medal. A better example would maybe be the Chinese gymnastics team that stole olympic medals by purposely and knowingly falsifying ages of the girl's team members. I remember watching- I think her name was Shawn Johnson, the American girl - having to stand with her consolation prize silver medal, a sort of sadness in her face, with her life goal gone forever because of a bunch of CHEATS. "Tonies", as it were.

Miguel Cotto probably ain't Sugar Ray Robinson part 2. For all I know, whether or not he ever fought Margarito, he may have lost to some scrub next year in a flat performance. But the way this happened is utter BULLSHIT. Watching Cotto against Jennings made me realize just how good he is, still relatively young, not many "ring miles", decent power, great body attack, good footwork, and the defense is getting damn good as well. He is still getting BETTER. What "Tony" did to him is a fucking travesty. Cotto was already at 30-some fights undefeated, and he could VERY well have gone to 40-0. Think about it - in the vein of Hatton or Calzaghe - but actually with a good resume as opposed to 38 scrubs and 2 old timers. A real champion!

I think down the line a Cotto/Floyd fight would have been FABULOUS, 2 undefeated welters head-to-head. I think if Floyd came out of retirement to take that fight I would call it a pick 'em. We might be talking about establishing a legend, like the Hagler-Leaonard fight did. But that's all shot down the toilet now.

And that's just the wins/losses part of it. What's even worse yet about what tiny man "Tony" did with his loaded gloves is that he broke the will of Cotto, which is something that may well not have happened without the cheating. I don't care how good Cotto looks now, you CANNOT dismiss the fact that he now has had an experience wherein he was in the ring and he was forced to accept the fact that he COULDN'T beat the man in front of him. He had to reckon with the knowledge that he was broken, beaten, and no matter how much will he had there was nothing he could do to win. He was basically helpless in the ring, and that shit STAYS with a fighter.

The undefeated fighter still has that sense of invulnerability - still has to be broken, and that makes it far, far harder to do. But once it's happened... we've all seen it. It makes it much, much more likely to happen again. And I am not sure that knowing in your head, in the analytical part of your mind, that this only happened because someone was hitting you with ROCKS in their fucking hands is enough to get over the visceral part of having that beatdown experience.

So thanks a lot, little bitch man "Tony", and thanks a lot to all your kin. Thanks for fucking over good people and good sports, so your untaleneted ordinary-ass can have it's 15 minutes of fame. I hope some taxi driver ends your career down in Mexico this summer, with cast-iron tacos in his gloves.

Steriods are used for the purpose of enhancing ones performance(and in this sport, its not nearly as benefical as in baseball/wrestling).

Loading your gloves isnt for the purpose of enhacing performance, its for the purpose of doing HARM to an opponent. SERIOUS harm in fact. Thats the differance. The SOLE purpose of loading gloves is to maim the opponent. Comparing a guy who loades his fucking gloves, to someone who uses ripped fuel is a retarded comparison, and proves how much of a Margarita cum swallower/idiot that you are.

Loading gloves may be more severe than taking steroids, in terms of the effects it has on an opponent, but explain how "enhancing" the "performance" of a boxer (w/PED's) wouldn't be intended to "harm" an opponent.

Robert Guerrero received a pretty good beating in his fight against Orlando Salido, to the point where it looked like he might've been stopped (and perhaps other fighter's would've been).

But by your reasoning, I guess Guerrero suffered no "HARM" from Salido's PED use.

Personally, I think any athlete in a contact sport who uses "performance enhancing" is much worse than an athlete in a sport like baseball, because there's almost no direct physical contact between athletes in that sport (outside of the rare runner/catcher collision)...especially when you're talking about hitters. (You could make a better case for pitchers who've used steroids, because hitting a batter with an "enhanced" fastball could cause real damage.)

great post. but on the chinese gymnasts' point, there was an investigation by the international governing body, and they decided the ages were legit. i know they looked young by western standards; but that's not too strange for china. so saying the china team were definitely cheats is at least controversial, imo. (trust me to come into gen disc and make a post that has nothing to do with boxing...)

 

Rooster, you know damn well those girls were underage. If the Chinese government was complicit in the age-fixing to begin with there's nothing anybody will ever be able to find to prove otherwise.

That said. I could care less. Just means those little girls beat more experienced gymnasts.........and more power to them. I hope it improves their lives.

Now if it comes out those girls were actually of the right age but they were being fed some sort of chemical enhancement to keep them from having their bodies mature so they can be more flexible in their exercise's.................then I would be fairly pissed off about it.
