Since Hakkar is not included, I go with Tarver. Late in his career he came to beat up an undisputed lt. heavyweight champ. There is no excuses about size there, as with all these other options
:warning::: It was a solid win, no question. Winky was a career junior middle and that fight stunk like a thousand assholes. I just don't see that as being the best win of Hopkins' career. I'm going with Tarver. The Trinidad win was "shinier" but the way Bernard moved up in weight and schooled the guy that KO'd Roy was his most impressive imo.
Joe Lipsey.. i was at the fight in Vegas, Bernard stopped him in 4. this was in '96 I believe.. and Lipsey's crew talked a lot of smack and he got dealt with
Yeah he torched Lipsey something fierce: <object width="425" height="344"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/ScRv9xzLeW8&hl=en&fs=1"></param><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/ScRv9xzLeW8&hl=en&fs=1" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowfullscreen="true" width="425" height="344"></embed></object>
I forgot about Joe Lipsey. His win over a young Glen Johnson was also good. He actually got a stoppage from the ref. Young Bernard had some power, but he focused on other aspects of his game as he got older.
people forget that Lipsey (the sledgehammer) lost to Hops.. (by brutal KO) then went 25-0 with 20 ko's!!
Shit...just checked it out on boxrec...you're not kidding. Except what actually happened is more impressive...Lipsey was 25-0 (20) before meeting hopkins..and Bernard retired his ass with that KO.
dsimon writes: His win over Calzighe, where he dropped Joe and exposed Joe for the pitty pat puncher he is ranks up there. Also his prediction that he would take Taylor deep in the first fight and subsequently almost knocking taylor out in the last round and easily beating taylor... thats another one I would rank higher.
:bears: sorry.. I worded it ass backwards.. I was at that fight and Lipsey's camp was talking mad shit. . he was called the "Sledgehammer" and was known to have a KO punch and Bernard was the one doing the "HammerinG"
I'm a bit of a masochist so I liked the 2nd Echols fight. :bears: Though Trinidad was easily the sweetest if not most impressive.
Hopkins beating up Trinidad, is the equivalent of Antonio Margarito beating up Marco Antonio Barrera, a Barrera with soft legal wraps that is.
Yep, it's true,.. this is indeed his best win,.. and it also means that Bad Chad, with his very own shut-out victory,.. has equalled Bernard's best achievement to date already, at the tender age of 26,.. only 20 years of undersized mismandatories to go.
I think the Tito win was the greatest when you put it into proper context. Queens of hindsight will say Tito was never that good to begin with but back then, he was the favourite and was seen as #1 or #2 pfp, he was way more proven than Pavlik, and he seemed to be in his absolute prime, something that can't be said of Tarver, Wright or even Glenn Johnson, who matured into a pretty good fighter but later. Hopkins was something like a 5-1 underdog and he absolutely dominated Tito and stopped him. This fight also showed the world how good Hopkins really was, he wasn't as highly thought of before this fight, a lot of people wondered if Joppy wouldn't be able to beat him. So, when you factor the context, the quality of the win and the impact it had on his career, I think the Tito win is Hops' greatest.
I must add though that the Pavlik win is the one that impressed me the most. I didn't know Hops' still had enough left to pull that kind of performance. It was a great reminder of how good this guy is... I think I've already said it but IMHO, Hops is the greatest fighter of his generation. If Roy beats Calzaghe, I might rethink that, but even then, I think I'd put them on par...
I can accept that...as you've given a very solid case..I certainly have the Tito victory as #2 and for teh reasons that you've stated. "However" [Copywright Father of Muzse, 2002] I picked Tarver because Tarver was the first person to KO Jones and then went on to beat Jones again..and then soundly defeat Glen Johnson. Hopkins MOVED UP to 175lbs to fight this guy who was naturally bigger than himself, taller, more powerful, as fast (handspeed wise) and who many thought would nail Bernard to the floor. Bernard dominated Tarver like the once hailed "Magic Man" was a little girl.
I agree the Tarver win was a great one, but I've heard Tarver had to shed the weight he took for Rocky and that might have diminished him. All excuses aside though, I wouldn't argue with you about this one, it was a very impressive win too. Hops' has a lot of them, he's simply an amazing fighter.
