I understand cats having pride in their hood, but don't overrate it! I was reading the article of how Daniel Jacobs is going to bring the title, not back to New York, but to Brooklyn. I'm a Bronx cat myself, but from what I can see, at least as far as recent history goes, Brooklyn hasn't been that special mecca of "Hoodism" as some of these fighters make it out to be. Example: #1. Mike Tyson- One of the baddest ass fighters ever- as far as talent goes that is!.... He quit in virtually every fight he lost (except Buster Douglas). He never avenged a loss (don't start the Henry Tillman thread); not even to freaking Danny Williams! He did not even avenge his sparring loss to Greg Page who knocked him down before the Douglas fight! #2. Zab Judah- Although very talented- once upon a time, he loses almost all of his big fights. He talks all the smack, rocks the Brooklyn tat across the back, unfortuanately, we don't get to see it long because he'll eventually end up on that same back. When the going gets tough, Zab gets the hell out of there, by way of KO, or Fouling. #3. Riddick Bowe- Another talented guy. But, part of being great is having discipline. At least he had re-matches (Lenox Lewis does not count) #4. Junior Jones- Talented, good, chinny, nuff said. #5. Paulie Malinaggi- Another Brooklyn talker, we've seen his act though. Paulie is best served doing talk radio. That's just a few for now (I'll get you later, Mark Breland).
In boxing, Brooklyn has become the borough of head cases, thugs, and just plain underachieving/disappointing fighters. Still seems to be doing better than the other boroughs though.
Judah was getting huge props 10 years ago on this site's fore-bearer, Secondsout.com Johnnie Whitehead, aka Everlast, who has written extensively on the sport, referred to Judah as being "tough, we know he is tough cos he is from Brooklyn" or words to that effect. There was all this shit being written, not by Whitehead mind you, about how Judah was "always down at Gleasons, getting better and better". :shit: Judah was the sort of guy who would have been a Mexboxing.com dream. Black, flashy, southpaw, New Yawk. When he got wiped by Tszyu......the bubble got deflated in a hurry. PS wasn't that UTTER BUM Salita from Brooklyn?
Sechew Powell, Anyone???.... These Days, Guys Think that by Merely SAYING the Words "Brooklyn", their Opponent is Gonna Roll Over & Play DEAD... Brother TAP Accuses REED of Being an NY HATER, but REED's Only Issue is the CLEAR CUT Sense of ENTITLEMENT & OVERinflated Feelings of Self Worth that ALOT (Not ALL but ALOT) of NY'ers (& East Coasters in General) Seem to Possess.... REED:kidcool:
Ive never been able to get along with girls from NY or Boston. They talk to much and too opinionated.
From my phone as I have been traveling alot, so excuse any typos. The thing with New York is that there are so many more media members here. A club show like Broadway Boxing will have ninety media members, whereas in Philly there will only be nine. And with brooklyn in particular, that's just where all the gyms and stuff are. Queens has no gyms of note. Bronx only has Morris Park Gym that is worth it. Staten Island is pretty much only PALs.
Tyson certainly didn't quit in the 1st Holy fight, that's a pretty ridiculous assumption, and saying he quit vs Lewis would be a stretch too. Apart from that, I pretty much agree
Tyson didn't quit against Douglas either so the whole statement is pretty much completely unsubstantiated. He quit in 2 fights one of which was his last fight where he clearly didn't have his heart in it anymore.
phonetap gets at you brother REED because you are from TEXAS, as if texans don't ALSO have an overinflated sense of entitlement and self worth...:kidcool: phonetap tried to explain once that brooklynites tend to be the most arrogant of new yorkers. after them it's the harlemites then so forth. being on the outside it's hard to imagine but all new yorkers aren't the same...
as Riddick Bowe would say, 'whatever the case may be" these days stating you're a boxer from NY means you talk tough yet finish the night on your back or face.
Well, Texans (Particularly Dallas Residents) Actually ARE IMPORTANT, Whereas NY'ers Incorrectly ASSume they're Important... REED:Lok:
Stevens is from Brownsville and came with hype and praise from Zab, which explains his sorry sense of entitlement. J-Done lived (still lives?) somewhere in Queens, but he grew up in Bridgeport.
You got me with the 1st Holyfield fight, but, he did quit in the Lewis fight. When he realized he was not going to get the knock out in the first 30 seconds, he relentented, then eventually quit! He gave in mentally from the early going, then left his body in there to take the ass whuppin. That, is quitting.
