Boxing has had shit talkers for years. Most times it's entertaining and apart of the promotion, other times it's annoying. The times when it can be annoying is when a fighter talks, and talks, and talks fight in and fight out and then get their asses kicked repeatedly. Obviously, this thread is with Ricardo Mayorga in mind. He always runs his mouth and has not delivered anything in nearly a decade. In the beginning it was funny and interesting. He was nasty with the things he said, kind of like Duran was before the first Leonard fight. The whole smoking in the ring bit (what ever happened with that?) after a fight, etc... What other fighter's big talk has meant nothing or continues to mean nothing and adds nothing to the promotion or the interest level ? Zab Judah and his Brooklyn nonsense is one; Paulie Malignaggi (a feather fisted shit talker at that; it's ironic that a lot of these b.s'ers are Brooklynites! I would add Daniel Jacobs but not yet.); Roy Jones (This pathetic last 6 years version).....
i hate to say it man but i fall for it every time. i still love it. you have a great point, with mayorga it became a bit old because you knew he couldn't deliver.... but i think he was giving his all every match. guys like tito and dlh just outclassed him. i guess i will admit that the shit talking gets old for me when you know that nothing will come from it. for example - when pernell whitaker said he was going to KO DLH, and it would be the greatest KO of his career (when he was just coming off the best KO he could ever possibly have over Hurtado in come from behind dramatic fashion) you knew he was full of shit and you knew he wasn't going to even try for the KO. Devon Alexander against Bradley too... that was old real quick. you knew alexander wasn't going to brawl with him
I've never liked it from Mayorga, because it's not genuine and he's a fucking idiot who just does it to everyone. I can see from a guy like James Toney because Toney respects no one. But Mayorga's shit just isn't funny, and he always makes up with people. When guys generally don't like each other and talk shit it's cool but I prefer to just see a good fight happen in the ring not hear a bunch of shit talk outside of it.
Real talkers who mean it don't make up after the fight. Remember Roberto Duran/Leonard. Duran shot Juanita the bird, talked shit etc.... When he got in the ring he was just as nasty; in fact, after the fight you could see how Leonard kind of stuck his hand out in good faith after the final bell and Duran just pratically pushed him. Now that's true nastiness! You're also right about James Toney. He respects no one. After a tough grueling fight, don't expect a freaking embrace of respect from Toney. I thought for sure he would finally show some respect to his opponent after the Jirov fight. That fight was so physically and emotionally draining. Toney wasn't having any of it. Toney is a true bad ass. Another guy is Floyd Mayweather. I love his slick style and overall skill set. Why does he claim that he is going to "Ice" guys, knowing damn well that is rarely his intent? He said that almost every time before ODH. It is a little like Whitaker; here you have great, slick stylist who want you to think they finally have become knockout artists.:wack:
Any crap talk is rather pointless. I like showmanship that is performed in the ring or even during ringwalks but these insult competitions are just lame.
