I think Lacy needs a trainer that will teach him to bob n weave, have better cardio and let his hands go more, without overextending his punches. Also Lacy needs to move his legs better in the ring, he's too stiff. If he could develop a style like JC Chavez or Mike Tyson (not that he's going to be all that) he may actually become a champ again and have a good run at boxing. I was thinking of maybe rooney, or ronnie shields..what you guys think?

Lacy Needs to Work a RELIABLE Jab into that Mix, as Well...Cause he's NOT Fast or ACCURATE Enough to Land his Powershots w/Out JABBING his Way into Position 1st...

right, I forgot about his lack of a jab. Also, do you think that if he lays off the weightlifting he might even be able to make 160 lbs? He got more than 8 lbs of "gym muscle" in there

    It's Doubtful to REED...

Lacy Should Remain @ 168 & Fight the Next Wave of Supermiddles (Taylor, Pavlik, Green, Dirrell, etc.)...

Lacy's APPROACHING 30 if REED's Not Mistaken...Pretty Soon, even Making 168 COULD Pose a Problem...But U're Right, Lacy is OVERMuscled...& it Hurts his FLEXIBILITY...

DEFINITION if Fine, but Lacy has BULK as Well...

REED Thinks Roach Could Get Something Out of Lacy....

Lacy Needs a Trainer Accustomed to AGGRESSIVE Guys....

So Stay AWAY from Buddy McGuirt, who Tries to Turn EVERYBODY Into a "Boxer"...Stay AWAY from Manny, Cause Lacy DOESN'T Have Enough Technical Prowess to BENEFIT from his Teachings...Stay AWAY from Defensive Guys like Mayweather or Birmingham, also...Tommy Brooks is a BIT Toooooo Technical, also...

    Rooney Wouldn't B a Terrible Choice...Shields Might Work...

Lacy was already with Roach and then went to Birmingham.

He should probably get with a lesser known trainer that still trains amateurs. Pat Burns would be a great choice.

Lacy has said in the past that he could make 160 if he has to.

yep, Jeff needed only 3 months in La-La land to know that the scene wasn't for him, or that he wasn't really feeling Freddie as a trainer. No knock on Freddie, of course, but much like Steward and Taylor - being a great trainer doesn't always equate being the right guy for the job.

True. Jesus didn't like violence so he would probabl tell Lacy to stay out of the ring, which would help him more than anything

the first thing Lacy needs to do, which will go a long way towards helping him, is to stop loading up so much.

I think any trainer that can get him to step backwards and learn the fundamentals of the game. One of the Mayweather's maybe. lacy needs to learn how to box.

That's almost like saying that Roger Mayweather could make Mickey Ward a master boxer!

Lacy is Lacy. That's what he is. He's limited to his body type and natural ability. Trainers can only enhance what is there already....

I would just add that in a case like Lacy it isn't even the trainer so much as his willingness to understand the level of his problems in the ring.

He needs body control. The ability to relax his arms for one. When a guy has his elbows as wide as Lacy does that means that he is straining to keep his arms up... that alone wastes tremendous energy.

It amazes me how certain attitudes about boxing persist. People are more adoptable than that guys.... If Lacy was a martial artist nobody would have any qualms about teaching him something different in a second.

If people felt this way about me Sly I would have never learned anything about fighting. I was afraid of contact, timid, etc. So I was taught to overcome that and became hyperaggressive like I should have been... I was able to do this because I knew I didn't know shit.

Lacy can be taught the style of a technician and adapt to it. He will still have his power. He needs to learn footwork and body control. If he were a martial artist somebody would teach him these things as another type of style, there would be no question about it.

right, he needs to shorten his punches, like george foreman did when he came back. work on his cardio and cutting the ring better, because almost everyone is going to throw the jab at him and give him angles like Joe did. So he needs a jab, a good technique on cutting the ring and shorten his punches, go to the body then in the latter rounds, go for the KO. Just imagine the damage he could do by going to the body consistently with that power of his

Lacy is the true one trick pony. But Reed is right if he worked a "head snapping" jam into his game he would be better off. IMHO, you won't ever turn Lacy into a boxer. If I had his ear I would tell him to become a conditioning machine and develop a jab. This way he could go balls out for 10-12 throwing powershots and jabs. He will never be good defensively, its too late in the game, so make his defense constant pressure with a high workrate.

    He's got an excellent chin.

Lacy has always shown a tendency to use the jab a round at a time. Any time he has thrown his jab...even if it's just a flicking jab, he has won easily.

I think all he needs is that jab-right; especialy the jab, and he's a top supermiddleweight/light heavy.

Lacy trying to box would be almost as REEDiculous as Frazier trying to use the Rope -a-Dope in the rematch with Foreman.

Next thing people will be saying is:

if Tyson was trained by Angelo Dundee,
He'd float like a butterfly and sting like a bee.

yep. I kind of have to laugh at this thread, though its intentions are good.

I mean, the man had over 200 amateur fights, went to the Olympics, and spent a large portion of his career sharing a gym with Winky Wright. If he were ever going to change up in styles, it would've already happened.

I'm not implying he could become a pure boxer, I know he can't. But he can tweak his game here and there and become more like an effective pressure fighter with power. I know he won't be jumping and running like a gazelle in there, but he can do better.
