I've heard all about how you have to be born with punching power and all that... but what is it about Diaz that makes him hit like a seven-year-old girl?

Is it style? Strength? You watch the guy put everything he has in to a shot and nothing happens.

It is damn frustrating to watch. I look at the punches and think they look damn hard to me but his opponent is never hurt at all.

He wasn't born with heavy hands I guess..
I like the accumulative beating style though, makes for good action fights.
I still like to watch a Juan Diaz fight, though I really thought Nate was going to stop him last night

What are heavy hands though? Do his hands physically weigh less, or something?

Diaz has never really given a decent fighter a beating, just outworked them. Fruitass & WHOlio were stopped because they're mental midgets. Diaz doesnt give beatings.

True punchers(in my mind at least) have a natural force in thier firsts, combined with explosiveness at the end of thier punches which gives them power. Diaz lacks these qualities. Why? Theres no explanation other than he just wasnt born with it, cause like you said he gets full extention of his punches and puts everything into them.

Yeah, it's a trip. Imagine if the kid could punch... but if he could, I doubt he ever develops the style he has now.

"Heavy hands" is one part of it.

And yes, sometimes that literally means big hands with a big, hard knuckle area - that often helps determine power too.

I don't think Diaz will ever be an explosive/KO-type puncher....but with the right TECHNIQUE he could be a HARDER puncher.

He doesn't always/consistently fully turn over his punches, and doesn't snap his shots at the end of his extension, so there is often little crispness or "snap" to his shots.

To his credit, he's actually gotten better at that part, especially with his straight right hand.

And he doesn't follow through. He punches at the target not through it. It's what gives him his speed and workrate...if you watch closely, his punches make contact and then seem to 'bounce off'....he's not fully committed.

And if you watch closely, he also hardly ever really steps in behind his shots, using his body weight as leverage from the heel through the hips and rotating the shoulders.

He drags his right foot all the time with that wide stance...so he leans in to punch and doesn't step in as much as he should.

He looks like he's "swinging hard" - but that's because he's often 'whipping' his punches from the shoulder or waist, and that takes effort and you have to have ALOT of natural strength to make those kinds of punches hurt (see Mosley for a perfect example).

All of that combines into a style that is build for speed, flurries and high workrate...and if you don't alot of pure natural strength in your arms/shoulders/chest (again, see Mosley), you likely won't get alot of knock-outs.

It's about consistency....sometimes he does some of these things, but not often enough.

They wouldn't give him a 90% KO percentage, but they'd help quite a bit.

    Peace.

REED Can't PROVE it, but he's ALWAYS Thought that THE SIZE of a Fighters Hands is the BIGGEST Indicator of Punching Power...

REED has Sparred w/& Held Mitts for All Kinds of Peeps, yet for Whatever Reason, the LARGER Handed Cats Seem to Hit HARDER....

Not 100% Accurate, but Pretty CLOSE to it...

    Kimba, knock it off, man.

And btw - Diaz already has enough baby fat at 135...I wonder if he's ever tried to make 130? He's had some fights where he's weighed in at 133 1/2.

He'd be even more effective there, IMHO.

    Peace.

    Why is this comment racist?

Diaz is in fact a boner (just like me), and he probably didn't eat enough frijoles (beans, a great source of protein)...before the fight.

If you've ever golfed, sprinted, jumped, thrown a baseball, hit a baseball or a golf ball, bench pressed, done anything remotely physical then you'd know that technique is only a very small piece of the puzzle. Otherwise, girls would compete equally (or better).

I don't think it's "very small" necessarily - especially not when you're talking boxing, which is fundamentally different.

If a guy has alot of natural strength and power and heavy hands, then he can worry about technique less (Foreman is a perfect example). When you don't....technique becomes a bigger piece of the puzzle (see Trinidad).

Like I said, nothing will make Diaz all of a sudden a KO machine.

But he does a bunch of things that 'subtract' from his punching power.

    Peace.

I agree with Donny...there' no bloody technique that's going to give Diaz "more" punching power...you have to be born with that ability.

He can't power punch because he throws 1,834 punches a fight!!

Volume punchers usually have no power!!

I think Octopus' comment is actually a very valid consideration that people have to think about.

I know this is a minority position and after thinking Olev wouldn't become old in a day, I have more than enough on my plate but I disagree with a lot of opinions regarding punching power expressed here.

    1) Size of hands has nothing to do with it. Tyson and louis are a good example of this. There are many more. Your hands have very little to do with a punch aside from needing to be closed when impact is made.

    2) Punching is technique. For example Diaz never has any real leverage on his shots because he had not mastered the timing of making sure his feet are planted and that his weight is coming fowards on the punch.

When you whip your body to punch what you should be whipping is your foward weight with feet on the ground. You can add to this effect by stepping and making the punch hit simultaoenously as your foot hits the ground.

I see it as a martial artist. In martial arts you learn the mechanics of a punch because it is assumed that you cannot punch properly otherwise. Where as it is assumed boxers can punch.

    3) The big factor is timing. A punch gets more and more force behind it as you explode more with your weight shifting, your body whipping (your spine really and shoulders) and hitting with full extension. Heavy hands means a guy has the timing sown so that his weight is foward on his punch. If your weight is behind the punch it is heavy.

I think that a lot of guys could use some work on the mechanics and that they would punch better if they focused on the mechanics more.

Frankly Juan would have to sacrifice punching in volume if he wanted more leverage on his shots. He could do it by timing one or two shots with his step (foot hits as punch hits target) and by relaxing his shoulders and spine more.

Watch Tyson for example. His punches come with his back foot on the ground and with a lot of spine and shoulder movement. When Holyfield beat Tyson he did so with a trick used by a lot of us Ju Jutsu guys: You triangulate the guy... when he tries to plant his feet you push him backwards, or pull him fowards where he does not have a leg and consequently the guy never can get set to deliver a hard shot. You cannot push the guy on another leg because then he can shift weight... you have to push him backwards or fowards.

It's really odd with Diaz, because like several people have said on this thread, and I have stated before - he REALLY commits to a lot of shots, you can see him putting everything into them. And............ nothing

He just doesn't have much power. Physically strong yes, but doesn't have that natural explosion of energy in his fists/arms/body to produce a powerful punch.

:nono: Not at all...he looks like he's putting everything into them, but it's because his technique is not optimal for real punching power.

True power punchers that are either natural and/or have great technique make it look relaxed, natural and flawless....not strained and forced.

    I think it's a combination of things.

Let me repeat: he will NEVER be a KO artist. But I do think his power could improve and he could put more damage on his shots if he worked on his technique.

The thing is - that would make him less of a high-workrate, speedy volume puncher than he is now.

    See my post.

    Peace.

I appreciate the compliment, mate...but I'm actually arguing that he could increase his power if he had superior punching technique.

Mind you, I've acknowledged he doesn't have the physical tools, and he will NOT become a KO artist or anything of the sort...

But his punches could certainly be more effective and damaging/hurtful.

Again...If a guy has alot of natural strength and power and heavy hands, then he can worry about technique less (Foreman is a perfect example). When you don't....technique becomes a bigger piece of the puzzle (see Trinidad).

    Peace.
