This is the same fighter that was held in such high regard and now all of a sudden he's been rubbish the whole time? Why the 360 turn around? and this question is for the people who had him top 5 p4p before the Hopkins fight............and I know there was alot of you on here so keep it real:warning:

Trinidad is a very good fighter, borderline great. At what he does best (inflict punishment) he's one of the greats of all time.

But his losses to Hopkins and Wright (especially Wright) and, to a lesser extent, his "victory" over De La Hoya, proved that he is severely lacking in ring smarts, adaptability, generalship...and quite honestly, pure intelligence.

As such....him coming back and talking about fighting Jones, Hopkins and Wright...makes a former Tito "hugger" like myself wanna say fuck him!:flip:

So what can we say about Roy for being destroyed by Glen Johnson and Antonio Tarver, arguably three times. Please.

i don't get it either, except that i think most people feel that his performance against wright was pathetic. and compared to the rest of his career, it was. he was clearly there for a pay-check, and for some reason, completely unwilling to expehd himself to any great extent in order to win.

it's not like wright is a dangerous puncher, and he had to be careful either.

compare tito's gentlemanly loss to wright with his furious finish against ODH and his never quit effort against Hopkins.

so basically you're a front-running fan. you like fighters just as long as they win. and when they don't, fuck them? no wonder we have fights like pbf/bruseles on HBO. you apparently prefer the guy who beats up on Glen Kelley, as long as he does it with style, over the guy who loses to a fellow hall of famer?

    Gimme a break.

My problem with Roy isn't that he lost, per se, it's because of his COWARDLY showing in the third Tarver fight (a fight he could have easily won) in which he was content to just last the distance and stay out of harm's way. He was also rather cowardly, but to a lesser extent, in the Glen Johnson fight.

I was STILL a fan after Tito lost to Hopkins and was rooting heavily for him when he came back against Mayorga and Wright. but he was too idiotic in that Wright fight and I lost respect.

I'm still a huge fan of both Barrera and Morales even though they lost fights recently so what are you talking about!

My brother, care to take this outside? :warning:

I don't think Tito was too idiotic or that Roy fought "cowardly." Tito Trinidad is just not gonna beat no Winky Wright. Period. And he probably realized that in round 2. I don't know what adjustments he could've made that wouldn't have resulted in an even bigger ass-kicking, or a KO.

And while Roy was tentative in the third bout against Tarver, he was only slight less active than he was in the first one. But in both fights, he spent the final two rounds pressing the action.

I think Roy gets motivated when he's hurt. The first 1/2 of the 3rd fight with Tarver he fought like a bitch. He was there to run. But later on I think he grew confident.

Tito didn't even try to win against Winky. He tried for the 1st 2 rounds and then checked out.

I don't think Roy fought like a bitch, I think Tarver's style just offset his offense. Tarver fought even smarter the third time - Jones is a counterpuncher, Tarver is a jabber. Tarver used his jab (and the threat of it) to offset almost everything Jones could throw in the middle of the ring except for the right to the body. Same thing in the first fight; Jones just had no clue how to get through. Against the ropes, Tarver wisely threw his shots and backed off, never lingering.

For most of his career, Jones would lean against the ropes with his hands held high, waiting for his opponent to tire out so he could throw back. Tarver would have none of it. As soon as he landed a flurry, he would step back and lead Jones to the middle of the ring where...well, we discussed that already. Throw in the fact that he had a pretty long layoff and coming off two KO defeats...yeah, there you have it.

As for Tito, I think he tried, it was just...futile.

yeah but why couldn't he abandon his usual style and go on the attack the way johnson did? because he was too pussy.

Didn't Roy himself say he only came to survive or prove that he could still go 12?

Abandon his usual style? I actually think he had the right gameplan. Try to steal some of the early rounds with shots here and there and play to the crowd; work Tarver's body and wait for him to slow down. He won the tenth round and was backing Tarver up in the eleventh when he got caught. And he almost ended up putting Tarver away anyway. If anyone looked pussy it was the "Magic Man" as he attempted to disappear into the seats.

He did say that he wanted to prove to himself that he could go twelve and that he wasn't "going out like that." But I also think he wanted to win.

well you think wrong. He wanted to survive, then the idea of actually winning surfaced somewhere in the fight. Then he got smashed by Tarver, who almost KO'd him while knocking himself out in the ring. Damn they looked shot

So the idea of winning never crossed his mind when it was clear but as soon as it got all cloudy from that Tarver right, he came to his senses? :notallthere:

I better see you at the Garden that night. Don't go crawling under the canvas "looking for Tito's mouthpiece" when it's all over. Alright, let me stop talking trash.

That shot made him come to life. That boy was running like a bitch all night. When your hero can't run from Tito because of his bad legs, I hope you and Jake feel strong. You'll need all of your strenght to care Roy out on the stretcher.

    Thread derailed awww

Anyway.I thought Trinidad's opponents were carefully selected during his undefeated stretch, until they decided to cash in and fight De La Hoya and thats when for the first time he showed serious flaws in his game, after that fight they went back to there old ways and started fighting fighters tailor made for Trinidad to look dominant against, for some strange reason, they bought into the press clippings and felt he was capable of beating anyone so they decided to call out Roy Jones and fight Hopkins.I think after the Hopkins lost people started too see him for what he really was once the Tyson sunglasses came off.

Gee. How about trying out the #1 rule when facing a southpaw, i.e. keeping your lead foot outside your opponent's lead foot.

I'll say it again : Tito has fought three A class fighters and been utterly schooled three times. He's the most overrated fighter of his generation.:shit:

I don't think so. Calling the ODLH fight a schooling is a real stretch although I had ODLH winning by a couple. Also, as shitty as Vargas is now, he was a pretty damn good fighter when Trinidad beat him. Then again I guess when you say stuff like that you just cheapen Wright's and Hopkins victories.

Tito is one of the greatest fighters that ever lived, no doubt :bears:

It's amazing when you think about it that Jones will destroy him so easily, that just shows you how talented Roy is to be killing legends in the ring at almost 40

That was a fucking excuse and likely something an egomaniac like him would say after he's lost the fight. What kind of world class fighter takes a PPV matchup and PPV payday just to survive a fight? It's bullshit and only a severe groupie would buy such an excuse. Roy wanted to win, he just didn't have the confidence once his aura was shattered, and that was the case for both the Johnson fight and the 3rd Tarver fight.

Also, people need to stop saying Roy could have won the 3rd Tarver fight. If he could have won it, he would have.

Yeah, you're right. That woulda won the fight for Tito

He couldn't even get close enough to do anything, man. He wasn't going to beat Winky Wright that night - in fact, I don't know if any middleweight could've.
