Tough one! Hüsker Dü v Pixies v Greatest Indie-Rock album of all-time vs Greatest Alternative-Rock album of all-time!!
Honestly don't know either album that well... I've heard both before (Zen Arcade a few times) but haven't really delved into either band a whole lot ... I can't really give an informed opinion on music I haven't closely examined
Doolittle is definitely up there for best alternative album of all time, not quite sure it's the best but if it isn't it's close.
I´d have it at #3 Anyway, bottom-line is, if there was a question "Which top 80's American college radio rock bands are the most excessively-praised after releasing a handful of good (but not great) albums" Answer: 1. Pixies 2. The Replacements 3. Hüsker Dü
Husked du are essentially pixies without the tunes, textures, talent. But if overpraised American college radio bands are the topic surely sonic youth deserve mention
Hmmmm...I dunno, I really like both (all) artists, I felt Pixies trailed off around Trompe Le Mond era... Secondly, I´d say Daydream Nation is right up there with Doolittle though, but as a band, nowhere near as accessible (for me)
I never heard a minute of Sonic Youth I wanted to hear again ... I'm with hut on that one (a rare occurrence in music... if he liked good music, I might turn gay and marry him because otherwise he's like a brilliant ray of light)
I never got the instant ´Wow´ factor with Du that I got when I first heard Pixies. I´m with Dennis Hopper on that one: ¨when I hear Pixies, I just want to get a gun and blow people away in a shopping mall¨
I agree sonic youth is self indulgent and often unlistenable. But they do show glimpses of brilliance across their recordings. Just too much shit accompanying it. But i think they influenced a lot of bands in important and positive ways.
Totally disagree re Sonic Youth, that string of albums from Confusion is Sex to Daydream Nation, all genius, perfect marriage of art experimental noodling, pop and krautrock...so fuck y'all. But anything beyond Daydream Nation must be avoided.
I'm hot and cold with Sonic Youth. I liked Goo and Experimental, Jet Set and No Star. Never been a massive fan though.
