ones which really got to the fighter and helped them, either motivated them or changed their game-plan and substantially improved their performance, either from the round immediately afterward or gradually over the rest of the fight. one that comes to mind is manny steward screaming at lennox lewis "get this motherfucker outta here!!" in between rounds against Tyson. the fight was over shortly afterward.
Most famous is probably Dundee and Leonard in the first Hearns fight. Whether or not it's "great" or just for comedic value a recent example would be Teddy Atlas in Bradley-Rios.
I like Nazzim...he's usually calm in the corner..not screaming or telling you a 100 different thing...et "I want you jabbing, I need you to get inside, work those angles"...WHICH one motherfucker!!!!! <iframe width="420" height="315" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/PH9HYOJ7N28?rel=0" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe>
I love me some STONEY though........ Imagine having this fucker in your corner...smh... <iframe width="420" height="315" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/8TVi6qugGBw?rel=0" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe>
"Brother" Nazim is overrated. It's because he's called "brother" and wear that silly woolly hat and called out the Margarito handwraps business that people assume he's some pinnacle of wisdom. The guy talks shit and doesn't help with nothing in that corner. As Whiskey said..the obvious one is "You're blowing it son, you're blowing it!"
Lol. Good ones from uncle roger. His most often repeated line in the corner must be "Keep doing what you're doing", seems to say it every time Floyd fights. Like that image nazim used with Shane - "I want you to swim without getting wet"
I enjoy hearing Roger Mayweather in the corner with his terrible command of the English language (still...he speaks better than his older brother). Manny Stewart is a good cornerman though, consistently so. In the Rahman-Lewis rematch he quickly realized that Rahman wasn't counterpunching and was just throwing up his hands whenever Lewis got close so Manny told his charge, "He aint doing anything you can just mix it up on this man". Soon after that Lewis decided to throw the roundhouse arcing right hand instead of his usual straight one...and the rest is history.
I'm surprised there was wasn't a translator needed for Mayweather and Hatton's corner. A Manc and whatever English you can call Senior's.
word. I can understand Spanish better than Mayweather Senior and as for Hatton's chief cornerman...all i could make out was "don't lead with your fucking face".
It adds comedy to it that he was training a quiet, no personality, boring guy like Ruiz. Stoney was a jerkoff blowhard but he loved Ruiz. He was fiercely loyal to him.
best thing i ever saw at a press conference was when alton merkerson dropped stone with a right hand and dude was rolled out on a stretcher
Dundee was always great at the pep talk ... Not an Xs and Os guy at all but a great cutman and a guy who could turn chaos into order about as well as it's ever been done... There's a reason he was in the corner of so many great and good fighters and well before he ever knew Ali
"You better fucking get inside on him now". <iframe width="854" height="480" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/55lh38QH74E" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe>
yeah, I thought of this one initially, but it gets disqualified because corrales shouldn't actually have been getting a corner talk at that point, the cheeky gumshield-spitting rascal
Off topic but I "definitely" feel that Lewis was a faggot at one stage and worked hard on converting himself to the light side of the force. I remember seeing him in an East London nightclub back in the early 90s and beautiful women were flocking to him and he had no interest in them whatsoever. He was a handsome guy yet had no girlfriend till he was in his late 30s. Every fighter used to call him faggot from Bowe to Rahman...and being called that would absolutely infuriate him.
I'm not the best at making out words but it sounded like he was saying it. You can check it out, it's after the 4th round, when the ref took away a point from Lewis. Steward says: "You still doin this shit! (Mimics a jab). DON'T TURN TO FAGGOT! And get this motherfucker out of here man! You gonna fuck around and get caught with some crazy shit. Step it up the man is finished"
