Star Wars: The Last Jedi - Trailer/Discussion

I was disappointed big time. Exciting first 15 minutes then 1 hour of boredom, then a little excitement at the end. Messy plot. They made some poor decisions in this film. Force Awakens was better.

 

Disney paid critics doesn't sound so rediculous anymore, does it?

 

STAR WARS: The Last Jedi Or maybe it should have been titled "Return of the SJW Jedi". From the opening crawl intro to the very last shot this clumsy sequel is so obviously and blatantly politically correct than it barely resembles any of the prior films in the SW saga. In fact so many things in this film echoed so much the current political atmosphere in USA that it felt more like a fan-made Youtube film than a serious big budget production. From the on-going diverse, multicultural, inclusive RESISTANCE where the main heroes are women, to the bad guys (all of them WHITE Caucasians, mostly male) lead by the orange-haired Trump-like general, to animal rights, anti-weapons, fuck the 1% elite rich who profit from war, all fell so forced that it sacrifices the little plot this film already suffers from. Because if you think about it, nothing much happens here. Just a bunch of action sequences that doesn't advance the plot or characters. I mean the good guys remain under the First Order fire since the opening shot up until a few minutes before the movie ends. The the story has so many big plot holes that you can toss a whole death star inside each one of them. Finn & Rose go on a suicide mission to get a code that can save their fleet...yet after going through an irrelevant visit to the galactic casino and 'horse race' they return empty handed, but good luck! The dude that saved them is a code master!!! (Dumb logic: if the First Order already had that code to track the resistance vehicles, why they didn't do shit with it in the Force Awakens?) It was good to see Hamill again as Luke, even though he dragged way too long to be again Luke Skywalker Jedi Master. Daisy Ridley was good too, but her lines were terrible and the whole Kylo Ren connection was clumsy, forced and will make angry hardcore old school SW fans. At the end both Supreme Leader Snoke & Rey are still a mystery as nothing of significance was revealed about their past. Even John Williams music cannibalizes his own New Hope score. I was greatly disappointed by this "Return of the Jedi" remake and by the time the credits were about to roll I was already hitting the exit door. "The Last Jedi' at best has its sporadic moments of pure fun like Luke's reaction of dusting his shoulder. At worst it keeps rehashing everything that was great about the original trilogy and for this it totally lost me. Watchable for one view. 5/10

I was hoping they will not continue ripping-off the original trilogy (like they did in TFA) and come up with more original plot points. I was expecting at least a simple cohesive story here, not the convoluted mess we got. There is now little good will for the next chapter. Honestly, there is nothing left to watch...or care about.

 

So how do you guys explain the 95% on RT? Some even claiming it is the best Star Wars since The Empire strikes back?

 

Because Star Wars geeks like every Star Wars film. Everyone went batshit over the Force Awakens even though it was an average film at best.

This observation is more grounded in reality than Disney buying out all critics, even though a few critics that have ties to Disney might feel compelled to praise the film, just like the mainstream media with deep ties to the Democratic party feels compelled to be loyal to THE RESISTANCE against Trump.

That said, this is the only Star Wars film where critics and audiences are deeply divided as in RT critics gave it 95% while audiences are hating it with a rotten 56% which is HUGE gap (I want my share of payment from Disney for the next film if they want a glowing review too, darn it!).

 

I'll do the box office report here because there is only one film that matters to report this weekend.



Star Wars: The Last Jedi as expected opened north of $200 million with a smashing $220 million, becoming the second biggest opener of all time just behind 'the Force Awakens" which opened to $247 million in 2015. "Last Jedi" also became the second film ever (after TFA) to score over a $100 million on a single day (Friday). Now the question is how much it will end grossing. $1 billion is a safe bet. $2 billion seems very unlikely due the hardcore fanbase backlash and remember those are the people that did repeated viewings that propelled TFA to its stellar numbers. Over $600 million domestically was a safe bet before it opened, but now we will have to wait and see how much it drops next week to determine if the disappointment of fans will create enough negative word of mouth ala Justice League that can seriously hurt its performance in the long run. It is also interesting enough that while "The Last Jedi' has more strong female characters than any previous Star Wars films, this one had even lower female attendance than the last two SW films and among races only 9% where blacks, so apparently Finn either wasn't appealing enough or black audiences decided to save the money for Christmas shopping. Internationally the film took $230 million for a global $450 million. It could had opened bigger had it also opened in China, but will open there on January 05.

In a distant second place and performing much worst than expected, Ferdinand proved once again that trying to counter produce a Star Wars or an Avengers movie on its opening weekend is just a bad idea. That is why other studios don't release any films to compete against those films. The animated film took a mere $13.3 million which is disastrous for its studio. Someone is losing his job at Blue Sky Studios at this precise moment.

Holding nicely in its fourth weekend Disney's Coco added $10 million in the third place for a current domestic of $150 million. The Pixar film has a global total of $448.2 million.
Wonder took $5.4 million in the fourth place and stands at $109 million domestically.

And finally descending to the fifth spot is DCEU's Justice League which took $4.1 million for a current domestic total of $219 million and a worldwide total of $633 million. Ironic that the most expensive movie of the WB/DCEU will also go down in record books as its lowest grossing.

the main fuck up is how the 2 main jedi's are basically novices ....they almost got killed by those guys in red...how can anyone get excited for a showdown between these 2 juniors in the next movie?
this coula have all been resolved by throwing in 5min of training footage where they're both undertaking intense training....the girls skill level makes zero sense...she already had skill in TFA somehow, and in this movie got a few seconds of training and was then able to lift a bunch of boulders...even Luke Skywalker was training for ages before being able to move around a small rock

 

...and those are some of the things fans are complaining about. The film has so many fails in logic and breaks so many established SW plot canons that it makes no sense at all.

 

also does the movie really need the black guy AND the 'bad boy' (new han solo)?? how many characters are really needed

they should have just cut out the whole casino part with the asian and black guy...movie was 30min too long anyway so woulda worked well...also they coulda added 10minutes of memorable jedi training where both the chick and Kylo become elite level, fuck up lots of people with the their new skills and fight to a draw... and fans can look forward to a proper showdown in the 3rd movie between 2 masters

 

It was very obvious, dude, and even this was the only reason some idiots gave it glowing reviews because they loved the pc stuff. Or you didn't noticed that contrary to the two prior trilogies this one had more females and more minorities and basically all of them were part of the Resistance while the Nazi-like First Order it was all Caucasian males? Heck I think that there might have been a pussyhat somewhere or someone kneeling in protest in the background LOL

And why they make that ugly fat Chinese lady the new romantic interest of Finn and not her more beautiful sister that died releasing the bombs in the intro? Ah, more PC crap about body acceptance and bullsit.

 

Fuck that. Look at the IMDB reviews. It's obvious score manipulation. People are bashing this movie.

What are you getting out of these "I told you so posts"? You didn't say shit and even if you did, your opinion wouldn't prevent ANYONE from watching the movie.

 

Meaning only the critcs are favoring it - hence the % score disparity.

it's not that bad
the first movies had Leia as boss, as well as Lando and a bunch of ethnic looking alien, as well as gay 3PO, and the bad guys were always white nazi-like....these new movies are maybe a small step further into the pc direction but it's not as bad as you're making it out to be - just look at the poster image you put up with 6 whites, 1 black, and 1 asian - seems ok
and Finn is an ugly fucker himself, so makes sense that the uglier woman gets him...the main jedi's are all white and that slick 'bad boy' pilot will end up having a romance with Rey

 

Horrible film. It has forever destroyed the franchise.

I have read somewhere that Poe Dameron is a gay man. Even Oscar Isaac has hinted that in an interview! When J.J. Abrams was being interviewed pre TFA release he stated that he was going to include a gay character...and all points out that is Poe.

Just came home from cinema, the unfiltered and honest truth:

From the bottom of my heart, as a true fan of the franchise, as a reader of almost every novel, player of every game, a man that adores these movies for over 25 years: Disney killed Star Wars and everything that modern cinema is about. I CANNOT understand how it's possible to put sales figures of merchandise over everything else in a form that you don't know anymore if you're watching a 150 minutes long commercial or a movie of one of the most entertaining, heart-touching and exciting movie franchises EVER created. I never felt that much anger inside of me, it's the most horrible blockbuster ever done, I literally started to weep inside my seat 2/3 through the movie, infinite empty crawled up inside me, swallowing my will to watch this disasterpiece to the bitter end with all the consequences you had to anticipate. The writing is the worst you could imagine, Disney killed the legacy of one of the most famous movie characters in a way he just didn't deserve, it just doesn't make ANY sense throughout the complete movie. There is NO actual story you could follow, no breakdown of what happened in the last decades, the most speculated story about a villain in the last 20 years goes completely downhill without telling us anything, it's just the succession of a $-shot followed by another $-shot and the big $$$-shots which are literally just in the movie because Disney sold off the franchise for a couple billions in toys and stuffed animals for children. I'm devastated, I probably need therapy to recover from all this... Take the money and enjoy a nice restaurant visit with your loved ones, don't let the movie destroy everything you loved, cheered and sometimes cried for during your whole life.

Burn in hell Disney, just burn.
