I think after Dead Presidentes, he had the potential to be something special. But he bought his own hype and started picking the wrong roles. He then went on to be just a role player, not even a big part in Major roles. And now he is back to where he started. Television.

Picking the Wrong Roles is PART of It...EVERY Actor's Done it, but it Shouldn't Be Held AGAINST them, in REED's Opinion....

Menace II Society, Love Jones, Inkwell, Why Do Fools Fall in Love, Dead Presidents...Tate was EXCELLENT (& DIFFERENT) in Each of those Flicks...

PRoblem is that when you dont use it, you lose it. He hasnt carried a movie in a while. Dont think he can anymore.

You act like it was Tates choice not to work. Maybe you have info that Tate was turning down roles left and right but usually black actors don't have a lot of good acting roles to choose from. I actually think the very good black actors should all go into tv, as the movie roles are so sparce. Only elite actors should be pursuing film full time IMO. Denzel, Morgan Freeman, Forrest Whitaker, Foxx, Will Smith; guys like these are the elite black movie actors. Guys like Omar Epps, Ejiofor, Idris Elba, Lorenz Tate, Derrick Luke, etc,. these guys should be doing tv to keep their bills paid and just taking on those rare small movie roles when they get an opportunity because they will rarely get the opportunity to carry a big budget film.</SPAN></SPAN>

I think Anthony is arguing Ejiofor is elite from an acting-ability stand point, but he is not elite in terms of star power, and I'm sorry but he likely never will be. </SPAN></SPAN>

Idris Elba is one of the biggest stars in Hollywood right now, why the hell should he be just doing tv? It's hard for black men to get good TV roles than movie roles man.

This thread has nothing to do with star power. It has to do with if this guy can pull off this role. He can be a new comer. that isnt the point. The point is can he do this. And the answer is yes.

Elba's kind of in limbo right now. He's being put in some movies so he might be able to make that transition to right under the elite guys, kind of like a poor man's Jamie Foxx (status, not ability). But he could start out strong and fizzle quickly, look how fast Gooding Jr, went from movie star to straight to video actor. Anyway, Elba is starring in a new tv show so maybe he already got my advice mapped out for himself.

And I'm not disputing that. Some of you guys seemed to get into a discussion about whether Ejiofor was elite or not and I was just trying to help clarify your point for you. But I agree he does have the acting chops to pull this off, I was saying earlier, that going by the trailer he appeared to be doing merely okay. I won't really know though until I see the full film.

How is Elba in limbo? He has been in some of the top movies out there and he is staring in some good ones coming up. And he has been doing TV for years now. He doesnt have a new one coming out, his show Luther is in it's third season man. But the show is in London. Not here.

He's in limbo because he's still mostly doing bit parts and smaller roles. He hasn't really had the opportunity to headline many big pics yet and once he gets the chance he'll either blow up stay at his present level or flame out. Given the usual stats I think he'll stay where he is.

Anthony is right Chiapet Algaesauce is tops. If anybody can pull it off, he will.

Will Smith is too conservative to have taken a role like this. Don Cheadle would have been solid, and I wouldn't be surprised if he was in the running. Djimon Hounsou, been there done that, plus too heavy of an accent. Denzel, too old..........Denzel from "Glory" would have fuckin' eatin' this up though. Terrence Howard............too laid back.

If Isaiah Washington had gotten this 15 years ago, it might have made him a star. Too late for him though.

Idris.........nah! Looks like the character needs to be meek at times. Idris is too commanding.

Derek Luke missed his window a few years ago but it might have been a good return to prominence role.

Anthony Mackie might have been a good lesser known choice.

Common is good in "Hell On Wheels" but he's pretty one-dimensional.

Mos-Def, I don't think has as much of an interest in acting as we all want him to.

Taye Diggs.............Larenz Tate? C'mon man. Taye don't have the chops and Larenz has the screen presence of a cricket. Next thing I'll see somebody throw out the name of Bokeem Woodbine.
