Correct me if I'm wrong, but I'm almost positive that Matt Damon passed on Leo's role in Titanic. After that, Leo became a mega star, and has remained one since. While Damon has always been merely a "star".

Granted, Dicaprio's a much better actor than Damon.

I don't think he's a much better actor than Damon

He definitely is. I know you're not a big fan of Leo, but his acting talent is a league above Damon's.

Damon can be very good in some movies, and very underwhelming in others.

He was brilliant in Good Will Hunting, but that role was basically made for him.

Even when Leo's not on his A game, he's still better than damn near the best Damon.

    I disagree

I have seen the films that people claim feature "Brilliant" performances from Leo and I don't understand what they are talking about... he is a solid, dependable actor, same as Damon

Leo has more range. I've rarely ever seen Damon cast as a villain, and if he was, I wouldn't find him too believable.

Whereas Leo just played an excellent villain in Django.

If Damon has never been cast as a villain, how can you be certain that you wouldn't find him believable?

Can't Recall the Name of the Flick, but it was Scorcese Directed, Featuring Matt Damon as a Villain POSING as a Cop & DiCaprio as a Cop POSING as a Villain...Jack Nicholson, Mark Wahlberg & Others were in it...

Damon was OK, but DiCaprio Carried the Flick...He's a BETTER Actor than Matt Damon Is...

    "The Departed"

    Damon was terrific in that

The story carried the film... All that was necessary was good, solid acting and everyone provided it... I don't think DiCaprio carried that film at all... I don't think any of the actors did... It was an ensemble film

The Movie was ABOUT DiCaprio's Character & Damon's Character & How they Hovered in the Same Circle w/Out Knowing Each Other...There were Important EXTERIOR Characters, but the Film was ABOUT DiCaprio & Damon's Characters...

To REED, DiCaprio "Got Lost" in his Character, which is a GOOD Thing, Whereas Damon was "Matt Damon Playing a Cop that's Taking Bribes from the Mob"....

REED Didn't Have Much of an Opinion of DiCaprio's Acting Ability UNTIL Seeing "The Departed"...

Surprisingly enough, Marky Mark turned in the best performance in The Departed.

But getting back to the debate, I simply can't see any case for Damon being the level of Leo. The difference in talent between the two of them is apparent.

Nah, he was the Usual "Tough Guy" Marky Mark that he is 8 Times Out of 10...

The Bravado, the Cursing, Picking Fights...Wahlberg was the SAME Guy in "The Departed" as he was in that Flick he Did w/Will Ferrell...& that's NOT a Good Thing:lol:...

To Be Fair, Wahlberg is a BETTER Actor than REED Ever Thought he'd Be, but he was a Bit OUT of his League in "The Departed"...

I see no evidence that Leonardo DiCaprio was anything other than "Leonardo DiCaprio playing a guy who finds himself maneuvering through the terrifying world of police corruption and mafia collusion" ... Christ, the guy is overrated

He's a good, solid movie star, same as Damon... I haven't yet seen a transcendent performance from the guy and I've seen basically all of the films he's been in... He's good, he's not great

James Cameron had River Phoenix in mind when he started writing the movie. Unfortunately Phoenix died before the movie was greenlighted, so other established actors were considered, like Mathew McConaughey, Billy Cupdrup, Chris O'Donnell and Stephen Dorff. Even Jared Leto was offered the role of Jack (he turned it down). The most insane was Christian Bale: he campaigned for the role in the media and in private. He wanted very badly to be cast as the lead so when the role finally landed in Leo's hands, Bale was very bitter publicly! (the guy has always been a crybaby).
To my knowledge then unknown Matt Damon was never considered for the role.

Jimmy Wang Yu had to fill Bruce Lee's shoes in 'The Man From Hong Kong' aka 'The Dragon Flies' which was supposed to be Lee's next film after he finished filming 'Game of Death'.

OT but another barely interesting apocalyose now fact:

the guy who wrote the screenplay came up with the title years before he even thought of writing the script - he went to college at UCLA in the 60s where kids would wear pin badges and write graffiti of the peace sign with 'peace now' written above and below it. Apparently as an exhortation to take acid/smoke weed for instant 'enlightenment'. He thought hippies were full of shit so he used to turn the peace sign into a b-52 bomber by adding extra parallel downward lines with some notches on them and change the caption to 'apocalypse now'. I liked that.
